Consequences of our Actions by Kendra Coyote
This is a story of something that really happened. It is being written so that others may know of it so that it will never happen again.
During the war season of 27 AU, after High General Zayes' death, a small group of soldiers decided to visit upon two Shamibelian soldiers some of what had been done to them while they were captured. The two Shamibelians were bound and unable to fight back after being captured in fair combat. The Republic soldiers, without unbinding them, took two spears and used them in a manner both humiliating and painful to the Shamibelians. Once this was done, they left the prisoners and considered the matter closed.
Nothing happened immediately, but once the soldiers left at the end of war season, those who remained reported disturbing things. In the newly re-named Fort Zayes, where the High General's body still rested surrounded by a strange blue fire, no one was able to sleep. On the walls of the fort were written the names of the soldiers who had injured the prisoners, in what looked like blood. Below it was a word in silver; 'offenders'.
Mere days after these disturbing portents, the Shamibelian army regrouped and stormed the forts. The soldiers within were driven back mercilessly and first one fort and then another were burned to the ground. The Shamibelians drove the Republic army all the way to the river's edge, and it was only by the incredible bravery of first the Air Force and finally the rest of the military which allowed the Republic to keep a foothold on the opposite banks of the river.
It is said that the reason this occurred is because the Gods were angered doubly and temporarily withdrew their support from the Republic. In the first place, it was removed because those several soldiers committed an act of aggression against bound prisoners who were unable to fight back. Second, because this act was done on the same field of battle in which a high priestess had fallen and her body had been given a protective ring of her Goddess's fire.
It is vitally important that nothing of this sort ever be allowed to happen again. Through it, all have seen that, without the support of these deities, the Shamibelian hordes could easily overcome what the clans have worked so hard to accomplish. It is also possible that if they withdrew that support again, no one could say if it would ever be returned. Acts of war are not permitted and soldiers of the Republic are held to higher standards than Shamibelians. All acts of hate or anger are ways of giving worship to Drik, and doing so is an affront to the other deities. While the soldiers who committed this act were swiftly punished, all must remember the lesson taught due to their acts, so that the Republic may someday defeat the Shamibelians and reclaim their city and the families still in slavery.
