Overview
Albel was originally part of the Gold Dragon clan; the clan of his parents and the blood that runs through his veins. Despite this, his personality was never one that fitted the type of Mer which would have been commonly expected in the monotheistic society of the Gold Dragons. Perhaps stemming from this then, it was not really unexpected by those who knew him well that he had ideas already forming from a young age which involved his transition from the GD’s to the Clan of Second Chances. Shortly after his arrival in Anarinuell, Albel became a member of the Chimera Clan, and from there his life has evolved more rapidly than it has done in the past.
This man is a mostly unsociable character with a strong independent streak. Few people are ever openly called friend with this man and even fewer glean anything more than surface knowledge about what he is really like. He tends to be rather humble, keeping his peace unless provoked; which can in turn make him seem ferociously aggressive if things escalate to the point of retaliation. Many people know him as who he was upon arriving in Anarinuell; a blacksmith that dablled in a variety of skills, from weapons to armor, bronzeworking to jewellery. Others know Albel as a Master Houndsman - a self proclaimed title that indicates his unrivalled knowledge of large hounds - or the legendary animal handler he has become, having tamed a wolf and taught many people of the city how to work with creatures of the land.
Albel is a rather mysterious man on the whole, his past being mostly rumours which are made up from the few facts that are known about him. There are some who speculate that he must have grown up in the wilderness on the Gold Dragon lands around Anish, or been abandoned by his family due to his odd behaviour. Some say he might have been hit on the head during his travels and woken up to seeing something that inspires his weird attitudes towards the world, while a very small amount of people believe he is some sort of empathic with animals who rejects or disapproves of the Firan society and its structure. No matter what people believe, the one thing that is agreed upon is that his unique ideals and behaviour is something of an oddity and social stigma among those who judge.
Before Anarinuell: 19 A.U - 35 A.U
Albel was born in Anish on the 10th of May, 19 A.U. Being of Gold Dragon heritage was something that never suited him and it quickly developed into a problem amongst those he grew up with; friends, family and fellow residents of Anish. His true past is seemingly shrouded in darkness, giving little knowledge about him prior to his arrival in Anarinuell. The few facts that are available tell of his previous marriage and how he became a widower shortly after. Many months of grieving and sorrow followed before he pulled himself together enough to strike out for Anarinuell, where he could become someone worthy enough to be of note in the world. He was a smith before he came to Anarinuell, with a strong affection for animals - so much in fact that he would talk to animals rather than people. An odd tendency, but one he was true to having since an early age.
Early History: 36 A.U - 40 A.U
Albel came to Anarinuell in 36 A.U to ply his trade as a smith; he was skilled in working with metals in almost any form and quickly became successful. Still a Gold Dragon, and openly an atheist after the death of his beloved Arisin, Albel was shunned by his clansmen for the lack of faith in the One True God. Used to this, but not on such a scale as Anarinuell provided, Albel was guided towards The True Temple by his first sponsor, Lord Rodiste. After a few sessions of attempted conversion failing, Albel decided it would be best to leave the clan instead, something he had dreamed about doing since an early age. With the permission from both Clans, Albel officially became a Chimeran where he once more set up his business as a fairly well-known smith, renowned for quickly completed commissions of good quality.
It became known that he was getting involved with an Eagle, Mes Nisa shortly after his change of clan and although still plagued by grief, he seemed to believe that he had to move on at some point. However, as things began to get more serious and talk of marriage surfaced, his facade broke once more and he took off back to Anish for reasons untold. For months he was gone and many more he was kept away due to the great blizzards that made travel impossible. Upon return, he found that the woman he had once wanted to marry had been taken as wife by someone else and even given birth to a child. With such plans ruined, he went back into despair; now also sponsorless due to his sudden disappearance.
Albel managed to secure himself another sponsor, this time the sister of Lady Rasha - Princess Katriana. He worked tirelessly for her, earning large amounts of stenis for both of them in the short amount of time he had before he became involved with another Mes. This time he moved too quickly, too thoughtlessly for anything more than lust to be the true essence of the relationship. Within three months they married and true to suspicion, he quickly became irritated by the young woman’s immature behaviour. Despite her looks, there was not much that seemed to please Albel, and they were divorced six months later. There was definitely a great mismatch in the pairing of those two and so it was not a surprise to the public eye that it had happened.
Recent History: 41 A.U - Present
After his divorce from Caralyn, Albel went back to work full-time, seemingly apathetic to everything and anything that was going on about him. Once again the dark attitude towards the world began to creep back over him and he was engulfed in sorrow that ruled his life. This Firan-equivelent of an Emo was now rejecting people’s company, withdrawing from time spent out in the city and remaining locked up within his apartment when he was not out at the forge working on his newest batch of commissions. Despite his unsociable tendencies, he was doing better than ever on the business front. With a good reputation for his craft, his income almost trebled with commissions. Money was most definitely not a problem for this man and he was known for his speedy completion of work for those whom commissioned it from him. Several large commissions such as the project of making some 750 javelins for the republic military helped boost his career tremendously.
Shortly after such an influx in revenue, he rented out a shop in the Chimeran district and began to sell his wares from here, once more increasing his wealth. Despite this, he never seemed to do anything with the money, and his time was spent in his apartment or out in the forests and hunting grounds. Then, all of a sudden he proclaimed his retirement from the profession, handed over The Smith shop to Mes Arinsana Garkensen and sat idle of work for a good few months. People were confused, as to why he had just stopped working at such a young age, but it became apparent he had future plans in mind. Nearly a year later he became openly known as a fully trained Dog Trainer and Animal Handler. Lady Rasha was his tutor and he had learnt almost everything there was to know about dogs. His self-proclaimed title as Houndsman spread like wild fire and he soon began breeding dogs for people around the city. Sometime after this, Albel began to court a like-minded woman with similar attitudes towards life and the world. Things were looking up for the man, and began to even match his way of life; Mes Veliana Karanik was made his wife in 43 A.U.
With his new trade slowly on the rise, Albel was a household name when the topic was dogs, much like Lady Rasha and Mer Bomani. His dogs were well trained and of good health, thus selling rapidly to all those who wished a companion or guard-dog. Although expensive, it did not prove to cause a problem to those wealthy enough to afford his hounds and Albel’s name still remains fairly well known amongst the citizens of Anarinuell. His talents with animals were more obvious than those with hammer and anvil, and although his behaviour and appearance was one often frowned upon by more xenophobic members of the Firan society; it did not deter those who wished something to make business with him. Albel remains in such light with the public and can be contacted for various reasons when it comes to animals; need a farrier? Want to have your dogs breed? Need some advice on handling your dogs? He’s your guy.
Personality
Albel strives to be something that is worthy enough to be of note and that usually motivates everything he does, no matter how small. While he does not care for how people think of him, he still wishes to be a name amongst legends for his accomplishments in life. His history before coming to Anarinuell was full of tragedies and has affected him most deeply, making him appear dark and apathetic to everything around him. He has a tendency towards roguish and mischievous behaviour when he is not engulfed in sorrow and despair. This can result in him presenting an immature impression, despite his serious demeanour in most other situations. Albel has always possessed an intellect superior for his age, and that shows true in his day to day life. Albel is cunning and knows how to get what he wants if he puts his mind to it. One of his greatest assets is the strong will he possesses, which often causes him to appear stubborn and ignorant of other people’s opinions, but allows him to pursue things that challenge him. Albel is more inclined to spend his time around animals than Firans, be it taking his dogs on walks, hunting, training his pups, grooming his horses or just merely talking to any animal he comes in contact with. He holds a respectful distance to nobles and their business, as well as maintaining a fairly amiable attitude towards most others he meets. Albel has a very dark and spooky streak in his personality, seemingly unnerving those who do not know him well enough to cope with his odd behaviour. He acts extremely wolfishly, so much so that with his obvious affinity for the lupine animal and similar appearance, he might very well be thought of as once being a wild-child. (Albel closely resembles an INFJ personality type, but the sheet takes precedence.)
Known Ranks and Titles
Sentry: Albel is a member of the First Division in the Republic Military. He is a Guard that is currently in the Hounds Unit, under Captain Teni. His duties are mainly patrols within the Palace District itself, with his assigned dog.
Houndsman: A self-proclaimed title Albel uses in most of his vocational duties. He is a Dog Trainer and Animal Handler, but his area of expertise tends to lie in the larger forms of canines, such as Hounds. Thus, Houndsman is more suited to him than other titles.
Administrator: This was a title he once held when he used to be the Administrator of the Chimeran Communal Farm. He held the position for over a year before he stepped down due to increased time being put into his research and field-studies on animals, as well as his newborn child.
Smith: Albel was once a smith, however he retired. Some still call him by this vocational title and although he corrects them with the new title of ‘Houndsman’ or informing them that he is no longer a Smith open for commissions, this title hasn’t died down yet.
Family
Family is one of the most important factors of Albel’s life. It goes hand in hand with his beliefs about life, that the “pack” should be the dearest thing to someone. Albel will put the welfare of his family before his very life in any situation, but is also a rather strict man when it comes to making decision that may affect his loved ones. His wife and children are the most important thing to him, and he won’t let anyone threaten that if he can help it.
Spouse
Veliana: Albel met this woman in the Forum of Anarinuell in 42 A.U, where they found each other most interesting. Albel's usual dark taint on everything seemed to intrigue her, which soon made him curious as to why she, but no-one else, could tolerate such a bleak outlook on things. Over time they grew closer, mere friends at first, until she was called off to Ellish in the war season of 42 A.U. Albel exchanged letters and gifts with her when she was away and mentioned vaguely of his interest in her. However, he expressed that this was not something he wished to rush. When she returned, they spoke of courting, but did not pursue to the idea until three months later, and then it lasted yet another six months before they began speaking of marriage. They finally agreed and got permission to marry in the August of 43 A.U. Shortly after they adopted Kelonos, their first official child. Then a year later they had Xyleena, their first blood born daughter. They currently reside in the Karanik House in the Chimeran District. Many believe that their relationship will last, if only because they are a unique pair that seems to work well together. Besides, they are both creepy, odd people.
Children
Kelonos: Kelonos is an extremely special child in the eyes of Albel. His son is mute and deaf, and although this will cause some minor problems later in life, Albel is sure he can help him manage and will not patronize his son because of it. If anything, he knows that it will be a challenge that will help him be a stronger and better person.. He believes his son is the intellectual kind which will manifest into some sort of scholarly or priestly expertise. He is however a mommy’s boy and so Albel allows Veliana to have more time with Kelonos than he has himself. Nevertheless, he gets along extremely well with his son. Kelonos even has the same sorrow that emanates from both of his parents.
Xyleena: Xyleena is Albel’s first blood-born child with Veliana. She is the beaming ray of moonlit hope that he believes came from Unot himself to grant Albel final happiness with his lot in life. A wife, a son and now a daughter makes Albel feel complete. Xyleena is spoilt greatly and any chance Albel gets he’ll give her what she wants. He carries her around, talking to her about animals, both dogs and horses, as well as all the other types he works with. He hopes she will follow in his animal loving footsteps and take up some sort of vocation with the creatures of Soli’s back. She is however, a total opposite of what the rest of the family is like. She is bright, happy and loud. She barks, pants, runs in circles, even! A happy puppy type behaviour that although Albel finds somewhat irritating when she is hyped up, he cannot help but adore; this heart-warming behaviour never fails to put a small smile upon his dark features.
Parents
Sybyl: Albel's mother is unknown to most, a name being all the information of her that is available from outside sources, other than Albel himself. Apparently she was a dutiful wife to his father Abarin, and a proper Gold Dragon woman to boot. She burnt in the fire which killed the whole of Albel’s family in Anish.
Abarin: Nothing more than a name and occupation is known about Albel's father. Apparently the man was a great smith back in Anish and the family flourished well under his income from the surrounding business in the Gold Dragon military city. He burnt in the fire which killed the whole of Albel’s family in Anish.
Siblings
Caleb: Caleb was Albel’s oldest brother from his family. Other than that, not much is known, other than that he is dead, burnt in a fire with the rest of Albel’s family.
Aeryn: Aeryn is Albel’s older sister by three years. She was the only other surviving member of Albel’s immediate family and the only one that ever got along with him and his odd attitudes in all things. She herself was not the ideal Gold Dragon woman and would have been best suited to a more liberal clan. Apparently she is somewhere in the Chimeran or Gold Dragon lands, plying her trade as a animal handler and farrier. Albel has sent many letters to call her over to Anarinuell, but there have been no replies.
Arber: Arber was Albel’s youngest brother from his family. Other than that, not much is known, other than that he is dead, burnt in a fire with the rest of Albel’s family.
Accomplishments & Successes
Houndsman: Much like Lady Rasha is the first person who springs to mind when one utters the word 'dog', so too does Albel. It seems that the field of Hounds is much more in Albel's court than it is the noblewoman's, where she focuses in on the dainty - or in Albel's opinion, rat-like - spaniels and Zutivian Tracker dogs.
Wolfman: Rumour has it, thus far, that Albel is hanging around his camp outside of the city with a wolf in his presence. Is this, perhaps, just a dog that looks uncannily similar to a timber wolf? Messenger boys who visit to deliver messages and parcels attest to the fact that no, it is indeed a wolf. It threatens them, but Albel soothes the beast and seems to otherwise introduce a measure of tameness to the wild beast. Maybe it is true that he is swiftly becoming a legend, on the heels of people like the Lion Tamer, Lonnell.
Animal Handling Instructor: It seems that no man or woman is better recognized for his ability to handle animals than Albel, almost a legend in his field. If were one to ask who best go to about some troubled animal, it may very well be Albel. To tame a beast of almost untameable capacity? Albel. Taking on an apprentice from each clan some years back, Albel finished with all but one alive by the end of the process. They were: Petula of the Eagle Clan, Aziza of the Griffon Clan, Hufimo of the Cockatrice Clan, Sabria of the Ticanee Clan, Oliana of the Chimera Clan, Tayani of the Hydra Clan and Hufimo of the Gold Dragon Clan. Scandals & Failures
Marrying Mes Caralyn: Albel has been known to be rather unlucky when it comes to relationships. While he has had his fair share of females interested in him, he seems to always be a bit unfortunate when it comes to keeping them for any length of time. The biggest public disaster would be his six month marriage with Mes Caralyn which ended rather abruptly after he realized how he had made a giant mistake with marrying her. People frown on his brash behaviour that got in him into that mess in the first place!
Enemies
Albel's enemies are usually kept to heart and while he might be rather obvious at some points as to who he hates, in general he is rather secretive on his motives against these people in his life. Beware, Enemies!
Allies
Lady Rasha: Lady Rasha has been a great help to Albel since his arrival in the city, so his respect for her is almost impossible to replicate, with others. She taught him the trade in training, breeding and handling hounds and has assisted him in his studies to eventually becoming the 'legend' he is today. Likewise, she is similarly spoken about in all of Anarinuell for her skill at breeding the Zutivian Tracker dogs and working with children.
Mother Petula: Mother Petula is Albel's friend and confident, her nurturing side one that perhaps allows him to open up just a smidgen. Likewise, they spend time together and enjoy their own pursuits, be it riding their horses or walking their dogs. She is also an ex-apprentice of his and has assisted him in eventually hammering out finer details of his plan that has allowed him to become the 'legend' he is today.
Miscellany
Habits
- Albel tends to his fringe when it gets in his eyes, without much effect. The hair is rebellious and seems to shield his eyes more often than not, so for the most part he gives up on the worthless endeavour. It seems to bug most people that they can't seem him in the eyes when they're speaking to him.
- Albel almost always dresses in leather tunics, leggings and loincloths when it is possible. In fact, he almost always has the same outfit of clothes on - cleaned, but worn. It seems he doesn't have much love for a big wardrobe. What he does have is of quality, though - durable and long lasting. In addition, everything is almost always black, grey, or white.
- Albel growls and bares teeth, otherwise acting very similarly to an animal when provoked. Otherwise, he is a cool, calm and reserved person who seems to go about his own business in the shadows of the city. Albel doesn't like attention and strives to avoid it, but sadly due to the fact that he stands out, it often isn't the case.
