Overview
Sister Arda Istariniad is a shy but friendly woman, not one to make much of herself. She is not really famous for anything, but she is respected among the bird handling community and her friends say she is warm and loving.
Personality
Arda is awkward and easily embarrassed, but she is also plucky and determined enough to continue trying, in spite of the difficulties that life has thrown at her. She is intensely devoted to her Goddess, and loves her family, her friends, and her birds with a warmth that overshadows her lack of social graces. She is optimistic but hates being praised, and blushes at the drop of a hat.
Ranks & Offices
Priestess of Uf
Arda's been in service to the Uffian Temple since she was fourteen or so. She's a full-fledged Priestess now and has been for some years, and likes the more quiet duties, where she doesn't have to be the center of attention. However, her love of her goddess is so great that she will even perform public ceremonies without becoming too flustered -- indeed, a kind of calm seems to come over her at these times, where otherwise she would do nothing but make a fool of herself.
Sentry: Griffon Clan, Aviary Specialist
All Griffons belong to the Griffon military, and it's no surprise that Arda's post is working in the clan aviary. She helps with the chicken population there, and is happy to do it, although she does have some combat abilities as well, and would make an adequate archer in a pinch.
Bird Handler
Arda is one of the best bird handlers in the city, but she is very particular about whom she will sell her birds to. Apparently it has something to do with a vow she made to Lady Uf.
Family Life
Arda's original family is a small group with no last name, of which she is really the only person left alive. Her marriage brought her into the Istariniad family, a proud and famous Griffon family, and the difference between their behaviour and the behaviour of her small family is striking.
Parents
Alia: Alia was a servant, and sweet and kind. She and Arda never got to spend as much time together as they would have liked, since she was so busy during Arda's childhood. She's dead now.
Selikon: Selikon was a soldier who died when Arda was just a baby.
Siblings
Rishon: Rishon was an extremely likeable boy: everybody loved him. Sadly, he got into trouble all the time, and was eventually declared insane and sent away from Anarinuell for good. Arda keeps hoping that maybe someday he'll be healed and allowed to return. She misses him.
Marriage
Arda has recently been unbound from her late husband, and the rumor is that she is considering the possibility of being wed once more.
Brannik Istariniad: Brannik was the son of the late traitor Brinna, and as a result he was grouchy and had a chip a mile deep on his shoulder. Still, they were deeply in love, engaged only a few months after their Ceremony of Souls and married a year or two after that. Arda adored him, and refused to be unbound for seven years after his death fighting the war in Ellish.
Children
Lattar Istariniad: Lattar was the only child Arda and Brannik had time to have before he died, and so he is the apple of her eye. If only he weren't so like his father... grumpy, unkind, even, and always shouting. He is actually worse than Brannik, for he doesn't seem to have a tender streak. Maybe losing his father so young has ruined him. He is always going off by himself, and Arda has no idea what he does. She worries.
Elspeth Istariniad: Elspeth is an orphan girl that came to Anarinuell one day. Arda took her in, and has been caring for her ever since and she is her daughter in all but legal standing. She lives with them, listens to Arda, and wants to grow up to be an Uffian Priestess when she has her Ceremony of Souls. It is for her sake that Arda is going through the steps to try to be remarried, so that she can finally adopt Elspeth properly.
Accomplishments
One time, as a child, Arda and Sabinar rescued a number of children from a cave to the southeast of Sarkaran, where they had wandered off and were trapped.
Arda traveled to the Oracle as a child, in a group of perhaps a dozen, and sought the answer to a question which it seems was answered there.
Becoming a priestess is a long and tiresome path, and one that Arda successfully navigated. She also became the proud companion of Loegaire, a handsome falcon.
Allies
Darius Istariniad: Arda's Head of Household, and a good friend since her early childhood.
Evius Jaffus: One of Arda's childhood friends, he has always been there for her whenever she needed support.
Galadra Junik: Lady Galadra was a Griffon commoner, who was ennobled along with her Gold Dragon husband. She's been Arda's sponsor ever since her Ceremony, and while she is technically a Dringle, she's so unlike a Dringle that Arda actually doesn't mind. She's stuck up for Arda through thick and thin and Arda would never think of abandoning her sponsor.
Hufimo Tahani: Hufimo has had a rough time of it, being kicked out of the Uffian Temple and more recently having his marriage fall apart. He is a good friend, even though he doesn't always offer popular opinions.
Shalila Jaffus: Shalila and Arda have been best friends since their childhoods. They agree on so many things, like peacefulness and how to get along, and they love to spend time together chatting over a cup of tea.
Srennik Ista Zayes: Lord Srennik was a commoner long ago, and he and Arda were fast friends. Now that he has been ennobled he looks after her somewhat, and though he isn't her sponsor, she knows she could turn to him as well if she were ever in trouble.
Enemies
Arda doesn't really have any enemies: she is a pacifist, and prefers to just avoid people that make her uncomfortable.
