Vasyklo's Report on the Battle of Anar Creek
This is the sole written account of the Battle of Anar Creek, where Lord Atreides was valiantly killed. The author of this document, Sir Vasyklo Garkansen, has taken the liberty of rewriting Omiak Mondarik's rather rough notes, understanding that former general Omiak is a warrior and not a scholar.
The Battle of Anar Creek occurred in 34 A.U. and concerned Shamibelian hostilities at a Firan fort near Firalut. The author of this document dispatched General Omiak along with a force of Republic infantry and pilots. Lord High General Atreides was later dispatched to assist.
The first event of notice took place during the trek to Anar Creek. General Omiak reported sending multiple teams of scouts into a clearing, including Captain Zelva, Captain Kendra, Captain Drios, and Centurion Derik. These scouts returned with two dead bodies and reports of a large swath of land, burnt to tinder, as if by a dragon. The contingent set up camp for the night, with Centurion Petulos performing aerial patrols.
Four days later General Omiak's forces were close to the fort. Before reaching safety, however, they were ambushed by a wing of twenty Shamibelian pilots. Under Captain Hansus, Centurion Petulos, and Prince Centurion Zaridos, the pilots were quickly driven off or grounded. Lady Captain Zelva and General Omiak both gave support with javelins from the ground. Captain Kendra, Captain Drios, Lady Centurion Srenni, and Sentry Verus cut down the surviving Shamibelian raiders, keeping several for interrogation.
Triumphant, General Omiak's force arrived near the beleaguered fort and met with Lord High General Atreides, who had flown in recently to give tactical assistance. Interrogation of a prisoner followed, who falsely claimed they had unleashed the Carnotti. This was soon seen through and information on an ambush in the nearby wood was garnered. The prisoner was then put to death in accordance with his wishes. They then proceeded to the fort proper.
Upon arriving at the fort, General Omiak and Lord High General Atreides found a fresh battlefield strewn with bodies of Firan and Shamibelian alike. The fort's gate had been rammed open. A tunnel was also found beneath the fort, which was booby-trapped by General Omiak using Pita, the ox.
With the Firan forces inside the crushed fort, the Shamibelians now took this time to strike. Captain Hansus arrayed the archers along the fort wall in a hurried defense, picking away at their approaching lines. Centurion Petulos and Prince Centurion Zaridos fought from griffonback and engaged in a small aerial battle. Captains Zelva, Kendra, and Drios, along with Centurion Derik and General Omiak held the line at the gate.
Though the battle went well for the Firans at first, soon the tide began to change. Balthan, a known high priest of Drik, led seven of his "Death Knights" to reinforce the faltering Shamibelian lines. Lady Centurion Srenni and Sentry Verus held off the advancing "Death Knights", whilst Atreides and Omiak turned upon Balthan.
The blows of Omiak and Atreides did nothing against the black priest Balthan. When they hit, their arms became numb. When Balthan struck them, it would leave no mark or scar any armor, but sent pain into their very souls. During the fight Omiak was separated from Atreides and began slaughtering Balthan's bodyguards.
Lord Atreides, now facing the evil priest alone, was wounded terribly and dropped his sword. He drew a knife from his belt and stabbed it between Balthan's queer armor plates. The dark conjurer fell to his knees in death. However, Lord Atreides was burned in a heat without fire, charred in the death throes of Drik's favored servant. General Omiak picked up Atreides' sword and led his men to victory. No Shamibelians were left alive. The battle was won, but at great cost.
Lord High General Atreides was dressed and brought back to Anarinuell by Omiak's contingent. He was given a proper state funeral and lauded as a hero to the Republic for his brave sacrifice. In this way, the Republic triumphed over the Shamibelians at Anar Creek.
