Overview
If hers is any sort of beauty, it is an edged one, the lines of her face sharply delicate despite their symmetry. She is exotically colored, warm golden hair contrasting smooth skin contrasting slanted eyes. Those vivid green eyes flash all but wickedly, hard and wild and terribly cruel. She has a careless elegance about her, the line of her figure svelte, long-limbed -- but she is no fragile, fainting thing, and her voice is caustic. Her smile, when it appears, is petulant, reminiscent of her famous father's.
Cecilia IstaNydiam is a wicked young woman. Supremely self-interested, Cecilia does nothing that does not in turn advance Cecilia. If it isn't in Cecilia's interests -- or, more generously, the interests of her family -- it isn't on Cecilia's agenda. All such fripperies as kindness and generosity departed long ago. Cecilia considers them the indulgences of weak people, and utterly hates them. Once a clever and dangerous child, Cecilia has grown into an equally clever and dangerous noblewoman, quick both of mind and motion. If she lacked self-control as a child, she has some understanding of it now, though she is not without a temper and, perhaps more concerning, hers is a black humour that translates to the visceral. She likes the feel of hurting people. Of going on adventures. Of getting her way. To that end, she is both stubborn and commanding, and where force does not win her way, cunning often does. With a resigned sort of bravery and luck to rival a pirate's, Cecilia is every bit the rogue and the lady -- refined one moment, causing havoc the next. She is lovely and she is malicious: a thrill-seeker, a student, a noble. She is, beyond a doubt, the daughter of Nydiam the Black. Or is she?!!
Family Life
Siblings
Diamia is the firstborn child of Nydiam and Ibania, a fact Cecilia finds unimpressive because Cecilia is the firstborn, and only, child of Nydiam and /Lucretia/. But, Diamia is the Cockatrice clan leader and Cecilia owes her half-sister some degree of loyalty. For instance, Cecilia won't stage a coup against Diamia, and Diamia will keep her bank account full in return. That's how it works? Right? Anyway, Cecilia is polite when she isn't getting into petty fights with her sister about things that rattle.
Cecilia and Tia are like oil and water. Tia is Lucretia's eldest daughter, the first lady of the Gold Dragon clan, and entirely too full of sparkle and squee. It exhausts Cecilia, just being around Tia. Fortunately they are distant, and when Cecilia meets with Tia, it is always in a formal capacity. Cecilia can do formal. Apparently Tia is 'sick', a fact which Cecilia would dispute because she cannot think of a day her sister was not 'sick'. Anyway, Cecilia doesn't care for Tia's political exile from the city. Not one bit. On principle, anyway.
Cecilia's brother Lucas -- her half-brother by Lucretia and Sadin -- is a prince and a hero and all these wonderful things that Cecilia is largely indifferent to, simply because Lucas has never done anything for her. Lucas? Lucas who? He may be of great importance to the Republic but to Cecilia, he is the smallest of small flies. Unless she needs a favor. She's come to know Lucas a little better the last year, and sometimes she is a very nice sister to him and sometimes she is out and out hostile.
He doesn't matter. Another half brother -- another of Crazy Ibania's children -- and he just doesn't matter. He, what, parties? Cecilia gets the vague impression he might be competing for Nydiam's favor also, but she doesn't consider him a serious threat because, again: he doesn't matter. And Nydiam's dead now in any case, and Banian an Elianik. Cecilia now looks to Banian as the least biased of her siblings. He isn't entirely IstaNydiam and he isn't entirely Elianik. It's a welcome respite.
Cecilia loves her half-brother Argin. And hates him. Another one of Lucretia's Elianik children, Argin nevertheless lived with the IstaNydiam family for a time when Cecilia was younger. He was mean. He used to dunk her in the estate pool and try to drown her, and Cecilia can't really forgive him for that. Still, she thinks Argin is cruel and fascinating and fun, and even though she hates him, she loves the Argin Experience. It's a toss up.
The last of Nydiam's children by Ibania, Aeryk used to keep his distance and so Cecilia kept hers. He was the 'nice' brother, and Cecilia always thought that terribly dull. Cecilia hoped to find something 'mean' in him; instead she found her second favorite brother. Or her first favorite. Or her 92nd, depending. He can be confoundingly noble. Still, Cecilia sat vigil over Aeryk's deathbed and she would do so again. In fact, she expects to do so again. The guy dies every other week.
Zayus, like Cecilia, is a half sibling among half siblings. He is the only child of Lucretia and Judanarius -- as Cecilia is the only child of Lucretia and Nydiam -- and his birth started a civil war. If ever there was a way to be born, Cecilia thinks, Zayus picked the right way. Cecilia cannot help feeling disappointed that a child born into such chaos could grow up so well-mannered and bland. She is always watching Zayus, waiting for him to show some spark of trouble.
Parents
Cecilia loves her daddy, Nydiam. Nydiam was always the 'cool' dad, full of mischief and excitement and wild ideas. Cecilia may lack Nydiam's disposition, but she inherited his sense of trouble, and she likes hearing all the stories about Nydiam's youth. She idolizes Nydiam, regrets that he is old before his time, and hopes he doesn't die before he steals a ferry with her. Or maybe a navy. Nydiam's death crushed Cecilia -- not that she would show it -- and she is maybe still a little crushed. She is likely to punch or possibly axe anyone who sullies Nydiam's good name.
Sadin might be Cecilia's father. It's hard to say. She wants to hate Sadin, but as much as she tries to hate the Prince, she really can't. He's badass. He uses dual-wielded swords. He's also a little crazy, and Cecilia finds it a lot easier to hate him when she's nowhere near him. It's led to a degree of ... inconsistency, on her part.
Lucretia is a distant, hands-off mother but Cecilia doesn't mind. Lucretia has been a Firgalik, an Elianik, a Corinala, an IstaNydiam -- a noblewoman, a princess, a whore, a proxy -- and if Cecilia has learned anything from Lucretia it is how to survive. Cecilia is not lovable and zany like her mother but she thinks she is beginning to understand what it means to be a noblewoman. For the time being, though, she will continue to learn from her mother. Now that she is older, perhaps she will also ask for lessons. Since going on a trip to Caldera City with Lucretia, Cecilia feels and acts much closer to her mother.
Accomplishments
- Cecilia sailed a battleship down the Ani river at the age of 9 -- a promising start to a fine career in piracy.
- Cecilia survived Caldera City.
- Cecilia was appointed clan executioner shortly after her Ceremony of Souls, perhaps the least spectacular but most exciting post a young lady with an axe could receive.
Scandals
- Cecilia once broke another child's finger when she was 8 or 9. There was a time she thought she'd never hear the end of it. She was even accused of breaking quarter! A child! Preposterous.
- Cecilia entered Caldera City the daughter of Nydiam IstaNydiam and left it the supposed daughter of Sadin Elianik, a claim she has since denied.
- Cecilia was seen at a particularly controversial, decidedly anti-Ista Aldrik speech made by her brother, Lucas Elianik on his way to their mother's trial.
- Cecilia's hair color changes more often than a conman changes his name but that's not really a /scandal/, is it? Really?
