Characters

This page explores the central feature of the game: characters. Using various examples from actual characters on the game, we will help you understand what our characters are like. All the characters on the game have been pre-generated by the staff. Each character is complete with a background and personality, relationships to other characters (such as family and friends), secrets, stats, and so on.

Any player can use the @sheet command to learn about his character. This page will show you the @sheet of an Old City ganger named Jazayeri Istems and will describe how to use the @sheet commands. Hopefully, you'll end up with a good idea of how detailed our characters can be.

You may be able to pick out a little about the Old City, but the important thing is to know it is a neutral zone, where all the criminals tend to live.

The @sheet

Any player can look at the basic @sheet for any other player, but to access a character's details you have to be logged into him or her. The basic @sheet commands are '@sheet' (show basic information about the character you are playing) and '@sheet <playername>' (show basic information about another player). If you called up Jazayeri's @sheet, this is what you would see:

As you can see, this one command does not go into very great detail on the character, but more will come later. For now, let's see how 'look me' relates to a picture of the character. On screen, if Jazayeri were to type 'look me' or another person typed 'look Jazayeri', the following would be returned:

Jazayeri (#16029PX?wfge>!)

     A middle aged woman with a deep scar on her right knee, Jazayeri has
     blue eyes, shoulder-length straight light brown hair and tan skin.
     Jazayeri appears to weigh about 160 pounds and stands about 5'8" tall.

     however. Jazayeri has a tattoo on her left shoulder.

    Jazayeri looks to be in general good health.
    Jazayeri is rank! Jazayeri is in dire need of a bath.

Jazzy's personality matches her description in a way. Her physical appearance traits from her @sheet are blended into the first part of her description. She is tough, and she looks tough; she wears clothes that are suited to a ganger (suitable for hurting other people). Thanks go out to Kinto, a player on the game, for the following picture of our friend, Jazayeri:

And, thanks to his wonderful drawing, we can actually get a glimpse of what the character would truly look like; and I think anyone would agree that she looks like someone you shouldn't mess with.

The options

'@sheet
Basic info about your own character. This is very close to what was shown above, except that it doesn't include what you're carrying.

@sheet <player>
This is what we showed above, for Jazayeri.

@sheet/all
As long as you are not on Telnet, this is the first command that we advise typing, once you have got the character. It will show you everything about your character. You should read it all, even though it's a bit spammy. Here's Jazayeri's @sheet/all. Don't worry -- not all of Firan's characters are so harsh, and most don't have as many relationships. Jazzy has been very actively played since February 2000, and her player has kept her relationships up to date.

@sheet/stats
Attributes and skills are another important part of the game; they help make your character who they are, what they're good at, what their base instincts are. Looking at it another way, attributes are things such as muscle, size, and allure (and other such on the game), which set the base for your character; how much patience he has, or she has, how strong they are, etc. Skills are things like combat/swords, carpentry, literacy; things which will add an extra level to your character, things which the character will need to work, but they do not have such a profound effect as the attributes. For more information on any attribute or skill, type 'help <attr name/skill name>' on the game.

@sheet/status
This will give the current status of your character; it will tell you whether he she is alive or dead, asleep or unconscious. But it will also show you much more because, on the game, there are many coded systems; that of money, but also of energy points (which are used in just about anything, fighting, building things, and the like). More information about money (stenis) and energy points can be found on the game. With the @sheet/status command, you can also see which toggles you have on. Toggles are things like autowork, which takes a little energy from you each day, and pays for it, or coordinates, which help you move around the grid. See 'help @toggle' on the game.

@sheet/skills
You guessed it. The skills mentioned earlier in @sheet/stats. If you use this command, they are displayed.

@sheet/attributes
Same as above -- just for attributes, rather than skills.

@sheet/damage
This is another section of the game that requires a little explanation. Firan has a very intricate combat system, with different body locations where you can be hurt, and different types of damage. While characters rarely get into fights, when it does happen, you can this command to bring up that damage and show you what type it is, and how much there is.

@sheet/background
Another intricate part of the @sheet and your character! This tells you what the character has done, in brief, during their life. It helps you shape the character, and understand why they do some things. It is, like all the other parts, very important to know.

@sheet/secrets
This is the part of the @sheet that you should almost never tell a soul about OOCly, and the only time it can be done ICly is if you think it is very relevant. Taking a random example, it could say that your character was abused as a child, and this would add an extra dimension to him or her; maybe they would be afraid of old people, maybe they would abuse their own children, but it is important to read, for character development.

@sheet/employment
This command will tell you who employs the character and who the character employs.

@sheet/family
This shows you who your family is and describes your relationship to each member. Often, these names will be other characters on the game.

@sheet/parents
This one just tells you who your parents are. On occasion, some of the family slots may not be filled. This will either be explained in your background, or they were never thought up. In this case, you could just have 'vivid' memories of them, or something along those lines. (Most people will either have them, or an explanation why they don't, however.)

@sheet/siblings
This gives you a listing of all your brothers and sisters. If there are none listed, then don't have any.

@sheet/spouse
This tells you who you are married to. If it is blank, then you have no spouse.

@sheet/children
This commands tells you who your children are, if you have any.

@sheet/relationships
This lists all your known relationships (family, friends). It is a must read, if you have any. Some characters start with none, giving you a clean slate to work from.

@sheet/social
Another highly Firan system, the social system. For everything you do in the public eye, you can do badly, or well; and it is rated in social points (SP). The more you have, the more popular you are. A Lord, for example, will usually have more than a commoner. This also tells you how popular your marriage is and who is socially 'known' to be linked to you in some way.
