City Walls of Anarinuell

Overview
One of the great wonders of the capital city of the Republic are its walls, built after the Great War for the new city to withstand heavy attack. The city as a whole is surrounded by an outer wall, and inside each of the nine districts has walls of their own. This was done to blunt possible invasion, as the city could not be taken unless most or all of its districts penetrated. The walls are the tallest and thickest such constructions in Firan history. Each district's walls is adorned with statues of their respective clan animal.
History
After the recapture of the city during the Great War, the Clan Council decided that to build a new city in place of the old Anarinuell. A major facet of this new city was a system of walls and districts, creating nine 'mini-cities' as one larger whole. This way, if invaders entered one district it would not spell the doom for the rest.
It was a major architectural undertaking, and some say it was done with the help of the Giants themselves.
Breeches
There have been instances of physical breeches in the walls, such as in the Griffon District's outer walls, but all of these have been repaired over time.
Gates
There are officially twenty-eight gates in the city walls. Four of these are located at the cardinal direction points and serve as the outer gates. From north to west, they are located in the Cockatrice District, Chimera District, Gold Dragon District, and Eagle District respectively. The other twenty-four gates serve as interior access points between all of the districts. Each Clan can control the access of its gates, shutting off its district from the rest of the city if necessary. The Palace District can also shut its gates as well.
The First Division has judicial and military responsibility for the defence of the gates of Anarinuell and all such matters within the confines of the walls.
Rumors About the Walls
During the Lion Plague of 41 A.U.
There's a rumor that Republic guards have found a few lion cubs _inside_ the city walls. It seems as if lions may have made their lairs within the labyrinthine structure of Firan city architecture. Some have said that the lions are a punishment from the gods, but the more cynical are now of the belief that Shamibelian spies have planted captured Bonduin lions in an effort to scare the Firans.
Tunnels & Holes
Persistent rumor has it that there are a number of tunnels and holes that lead out of the city, bypassing the mighty defense of the walls themselves. Some say that this is how those few slavers to have been caught within Anarinuell were getting their unsavoury merchandise out of the city. Whether true or not, simply the rumour of tunnels gives some hope for bypassing taxes or prohibitions on their products and others a chance to escape when hunted.
