Community Points for Players

Overview

The best thing about Firan is that we've developed a community of players who help each other out, and make Firan a virtual home. We have a large staff who put in enough hours on Firan each week to qualify as a part-time job. We have an even larger group of Player Helpers. And the players themselves are eager to pitch in and help make Firan fun for everyone. It's for this reason that we're able to keep Firan from being a pay-to-play game and its time we start rewarding people for pitching in.

One ways we're going to do this on Firan is a system called 'Community Points'. If you're a good mush citizen, and you help out, we think you've earned the right to a few perks. If there are going to be perks on a game, they shouldn't go to someone because they know the right people or happened to ask on the right day--we believe in meritocracy. Players who give a lot, should get a lot.

Usually, we reward people by giving them XP. But on a game like Firan, stats aren't everything, and some characters are as developed as they should be. Plus, it's not the character we want to reward. It's you. We want to make the game more fun for you when you contribute, and we think Community Points will help do that.

As a staff, we've separated out some things on Firan which are not necessary to game play or for daily maintenance, but which players enjoy. One is having your child object be chargenned. Another is having a soul set on your character and having your sheet reflect the change. Over time, we'll be adding more things to that list of non-essentials and you'll be able to spend community points you've earned to get those perks.

Earning Community Points

You can earn community points in any number of ways, including but not limited to:

  • Help staff test code
  • Write newsletters as FacHead
  • Recruit other players to Firan
  • Write Obits
  • Become wizard of the week
  • Run events for other players
  • Become playerhelper of the week
  • Submit updates for characters
  • Write quality scrolls for the Library
  • Help with the Firan History Project
  • Be a festival coordinator
  • Be an Olympic Coordinator
  • Run a Help Question Contest
  • Update your character thoroughly before rostering. Include background, personality, and most relationships within 2 weeks of roster date.
  • Be nominated by another player
  • Help with FiranCon
  • Help someone find a new character
  • Participate in the political process! If you are an American citizen who votes in the primaries, you can get 2 CP. If you caucus for the primaries, you can get 4. If you vote in the elections, you can get 5 CP.

Sometimes things that will earn you community points -- such as writing online articles relating to the game and refreshing an old character -- will be posted on the @republic system. So make sure to check it out from time to time to see what is available!

Spending Community Points

Over time, we expect this list to expand, but at present, players may spend their community points on the following:

  • Getting a soul update for your character (30 CPs + Background)
  • Getting your child object turned into a real character (50 CPs)
  • Description Rewrites on your Character - even Level IVs. Descs of Feature characters will be reviewed on a case by case basis. (10 CPs)
  • Minor Description Tweaks to Reflect Stat Changes (5 CPs)
  • Non-Essential New Room Building (10 CP per room)
  • Custom Quests (200 CPs)
  • Research that requires us to create thematic material (30 CPs)
  • Upgrading your Level IV to a Level III ahead of schedule (50 CPs)
  • Obtaining a 5 in a Birthday Bonus without skills or logs (40 CPs)
  • Triggering early labor (10 CPs per IC day prior to the ninth month, up to seven days; 10 CPs within the ninth month)
  • Attempting to impregnate or be impregnated by a rostered spouse. This is not an automatic successes, but rather 1 chance per 5 CP spent on the attempt. At the time of request, include the number of attempts you would like to make. Only one such request per RL week.
  • Expediting a request (Dependent on the complexity of the request)
  • Something not on the list (Dependent on the something, and Wizstaff approval)
  • Obtaining a new Level IV ahead of schedule. (15 CP)
  • Installing 'places' in a room. (5 CP)
  • Having a baby object (15 CP) or a toddler/child object (25 CP) created for your new level IV, assuming it corresponds with the IV's story
  • Reversing the random chance of sterilization on characters that went through level IV chargen (subject to wizard approval - ask via @request).(50 CP)
  • Having a wizard run an emit for you that is deemed an unnecessary emit to the game. (5 CP)
  • Changing your character's feature, contingent on wizard approval (5 CP)
  • Stat tweaks for Level IV chargens (10 CP per tweak, see note below)
  • Retrieving an object from a rostered character, with justification (5 CP)
  • Lowering an attribute with justification and staff approval (5 CP)
  • Writing an obit for your deceased level IV (10 CP)

Please note that souls will still be assigned without CP, but your sheet will not be changed to reflect it. Sometimes, for story purposes, we might give a sheet update to someone just because we need them to have a soul integration for the overarching storyline. And sometimes, we'll chargen a child because we need the child chargenned. We will often run quests for the good of the game with or without CP--they just might not be for you or the quests you had in mind unless you're willing to spend the CP. Early labor, when close to the ninth month, can be triggered for CPs with no additional difficulty added although the normal difficulties (stress, over 30, twins, etc.) still apply.

When tweaking Level IV stats, your character's overall stat points must remain in balance. If you raise a stat, another stat must be lowered. Attribute changes are subject to wizard review, and lowering a stat to a 1 or raising a stat to a 5 may require significant justification. All stat tweaks must be made within 1 RL month of creating the character.

Nominating for Community Points

On FiranMUX, we rely on you to reward good citizenship when you see it. Is someone always helping guests and never gets recognized? Did someone ease your transition to Firan? Help you find a character? Help diffuse an argument between players? Is someone putting out a lot of effort on Firan that deserves to be rewarded, but always seems to fly beneath the radar? You can help let us know in one of two ways. If you think it's a big deal, what they did, deserving of lots and lots of community points, @request and let us know. If it's something smaller, but worthwhile, use the @cpoints/nom command.

We want Firan to be fun for everyone, and people helping people is what it's all about.

The Commands

COMMAND: @cpoints

         Syntax:  @cpoints
                  @cpoints/transfer <amount>=<alt>
                  @cpoints/nom <players>=<reason>
                  @cpoints/nominate <players>=<reason>
                  @cpoints/exchange <amount>

The first command will show you your own Community Points count -- used and unused.

The second command will allow you to transfer unused Community Points between alts for use.

The third and fourth command will allow you to nominate another player or players. Guests cannot nominate, but they can ask a PHer to do so. You cannot nominate yourself or your alts and MUST provide a reason. Please be specific so that the Player Helpers analyzing nominations can grant a fair and valid decision.

The final command allows a you to exchange an equal amount of community points into XP so you may spend it to improve your character.
