Overview

Dalinuel is a priest of Kamnestra and a sentry in the Guard. A member of the Bear clan, he is an indifferent craftsman and modest fighter, but noted for his frank and open nature and his work with the children in the Orphanage of Kamnestra.

Early History

Born in Garusani, until age 11 Dalinuel was an only child who lived with his father, Delos, a Guard, and mother, Danicae, a weaver. Good Bears, his father taught Dali to hunt and fish, and his mother insisted that he learn to be polite, speak properly, dance and sing "like a good Bear boy." A clumsy boy, he was not permitted weapons for fear he would hurt himself.

During the rioting in Nelabam, Dali's father was transferred to bolster the defenses of that city. He and Danicae went together, sending Dalinuel to the big city of Anarinuell to live with his cousin, Corinos. Plagued all his life by a poor memory, Dali arrived in the city having forgotten his cousin's name (he'd only met him once, when he was three). After a brief time living on the streets he was taken in, first by a midwife, mes Keira, and after mes Keira's death following accidental ingestion of wolfsbane, by the Orphanage of Kamnestra, despite the fact that he was not technically an orphan.

Raised in the Orphanage until his Ceremony of Souls, Dali had intended to enter the Guard immediately until Father Brizo Firini, then High Priest of the Temple of Kamnestra, suggested he try the priesthood. Dali served the temple as an acolyte until the end of the Ellish campaign, when he was granted his trials as a reward for managing the Orphanage in the absence of the priests and priestesses at the front for the Liberation of Ellish. He succeeded in his trials and was invested a full priest, enrolling in the Guard shortly thereafter.

Recent History

Dali has of late taken over the legal services of the Orphanage and as a Guard participated in several high-profile searches and duties, including the execution of the murderers Meris and Redensin and fighting fires in the Palace District. He served in the first deployment to Firan Occupied Ellish, Operation New Start, and was one of the few chosen to investigate the Tower of Obala. He unfortunately contracted t'rages on deployment, and spent some time recovering before being returned to duty. He also served as a construction worker, seconded to the Fifth Division, in the third deployment, Operation Make Friends. He participated in the abortive assault on the East Gate, and his left hand was badly damaged by a Shamibelian sword in the battle.

Personality & Beliefs

It is rumored that Dali has a sense of humor but careful observation indicates that this rumor may not be true. He speaks slowly, not through any lack of wit or intelligence but out of care to say exactly what he means. His has a relatively high degree of tolerance for other people and beliefs because of the time he spent growing up in the Orphanage community, which includes children whose fathers were Shamibelian and also, through the Zutiv's Blessings orphanage, monotheists. He loves the outdoors and goes hunting, fishing and swimming when his duties permit.

Ranks & Offices

Priest, Temple of Kamnestra
Sentry, Bear Militia. Speciality: Dog handling
Sentry, Guard.

Family Life

Dali's parents have not been heard from since the riots, and are officially missing, presumed dead.

As with many of the Temple children, life in the orphanage tends to lead to a sense of family among the children. Dali fully expects to marry one of the orphanage girls and to adopt the young crippled girl Vasiliki, whose swaddling clothes he used to change as a child.

Siblings

Dali has no blood siblings, but was befriended early in his days by Yacen Cylisti, and the two have become blood brothers. They wear matching silver rings, with their clan animals, the Bear and the Eagle, laminated into them in semiprecious stones.

Marriage

Dali is unmarried. Dame Mother Cyrilla Daedalus spoke to mer Garmon Verber about his daughter, Vian, another of the orphanage alums, on Dali's behalf, but mer Garmon decided that Vian was not old enough to court.

Children

No children, but several awaiting adoption on marriage.

Accomplishments & Successes

Dali was one of the arresting officers of the murderer Meris, for which he earned a substantial reward. He is also by now a skilled archer and animal handler.

Scandals & Failures

Dali was arrested for trespass when he violated the quarantine around the Great Library during the Red Bloom epidemic. The penalty was very light when it was recognized that, as usual, he had just forgotten about it.

Enemies

Yathel! That broken nosed so-and-so is going to get his one day.

The really stupid mes who nearly started a riot in the temple just because Pythia, one of the halffie children, was playing with Ulker, another, full-blooded Firan child.

Allies

Yacen. He also looked up to Yacen's older brother Kelarik, and Kelerik's widow Petula was one of his nurses when he was sick with the pox.

All the orphanage kids watch for each other. His age cohort includes Kalina, Phillida, Jakobi, Aziza, Vian, Willow, Aglaia, Sala, Tarran, Tyrin, and Sren, among others.

Lord Mahir Iberik was one of the leaders of the group of children, including Kelarik, Yacen, Hufimo and Jakobi, that Dali ran with as a child. Later, when Aziza was taken by Shamibelian raiders, Lord Mahir took Dali on his griffon as a passenger: Aziza was recovered and as a result Dali learned to shoot the bow. Lord Mahir is now an initiate of the Temple of Kamnestra.

Dali's sponsor is Lord Talikos Teranzik.

Teekle, the monkey mascot of the Temple of Kamnestra. Dali frequently says that Teekle was the second person he met when brought there, after Cyrilla.

Miscellany

His nicknames include Dal, Dali, Dally and Dalin. If he's asked he always gives 'Dali' but never corrects anyone who uses any of the others.

Habits

Dali has the distinctive mannerism of a foot that taps when he is lost in thought and does not think to stop. He carries a flute with him at all times, playing to entertain or to accompany singers during ceremonies and celebrations. He routinely makes small gifts for the orphan children, jewelry boxes, fortune dice, wooden sword, carved action figures and the like.

Likes

Dali enjoys competitions of all sorts...physical, intellectual, whatever...although he is indifferently educated and not much of an athlete. He is an excellent loser, being very used to it.

He also likes all sorts of animals and is very fond of children. As above, he enjoys hunting, especially shooting birds on the wing, fishing, camping, swimming, and outdoor activities of all sorts. He attends as many classes at the Lokaranis Academy as he can afford.

Dislikes

Dali is notoriously short with people who are rude. He avoids liquor under most circumstances.
