Overview
A young woman with a commanding presence, Emma has black eyes, long straight sandy brown hair and tan skin. Emma appears to weigh about 135 pounds and stands about 5'5" tall. A handsome woman with strong cheekbones and an intense gaze, she commands attention. She has a slim, toned figure, with perfect dark skin and the merest hint of muscle beneath it. Her eyes have a storm in them and that storm often carries through to her voice, low and crackling. When she smiles, she presses her lips close together, as if very tense about something. She walks with a masculine swagger.
Lady Emma Teranzik nee Firgalik is not, strictly speaking, the most mature woman in the world. She is, however, a strong one. When Emma is unhappy, she makes everyone else unhappy too. Whether she feels annoyed, slighted, sad or even a touch peckish, she resorts to tantrum throwing, and what terrifying tantrums she throws. Screaming and shouting and bunching up her fists, she'll go after any servant, commoner, or noble who dares to displease her, with the exception of her father. For her father, she will only shout. On calmer days, Emma is much more pleasant. Although tactless to a point, and with the tendency to eschew proper etiquette, she has an almost compelling personality, full of hearty laughter and jokes. In fact, she prides herself on her ability to make up a joke on the spot! Breathtakingly straightforward and unable to lie, she is also very sincere. But Emma is a woman who has had to fight, all her life, just to be herself. She is always tense, always just a little bit on edge, always ready to defend herself. Emma is a warrior at heart, and growing up in a clan where women are not allowed to be warriors, it is testament to her strength of spirit that she has endured so long. Perhaps for this reason, Emma is so eager to boss people around -- and usually, she is very good at it.
Early History
Emma grew up in the Gold Dragon mansion, the second youngest daughter of Jalil and Emeelya. From a very early age she strove to follow not in her mother's footsteps, nor her older sister Jaline's, but in the footsteps of her father and esteemed brother, Ojitar. There was nothing in the world that she wanted more than to be a Gold Dragon warrior, and throughout her youth and early adulthood, she made sure that people knew it. Wearing masculine clothing, carrying around swords, and even donning armor, she was often a source of shame for the Gold Dragon royal family, but she endured even throughout the many attempts to keep her head down and out of the glow of scandal. There were bouts where she would don a stola and palla, especially after her brother, Clan Leader Ojitar, punished her severely and took away all her armor and weapons, but such punishments only really served to strengthen her resolve. Even if she would play nice for a few months afterwards.
Recent History
Recently, Emma has been married off to the Bear Clan to Lord Empyrean Teranzik. While many people see this as a saving grace for Emma, to be married into a clan that accepts women as warriors and, indeed, as equals to men, Emma is not convinced. Instead, she sees the shift as a way of sweeping her under the rug, getting her out of the Gold Dragon clan so she won't be an embarassment any longer. Her entire life was spent preparing to be a Gold Dragon warrior. Not a Bear warrior. She never wanted to marry out of clan or out of the Firgalik family at all, and she wanted to change the Gold Dragon clan for the better. Now she is just some Bear lady.
Of course, she does realize that the marriage and clan shift allows her freedoms that she likely never would have gotten despite how much she would have fought for them in her clan of birth. And, truth be told, she enjoys her marriage more than she ever expected to. Perhaps in time, she will become more comfortable in her new clan, but as it stands right now, Emma is still as tense and defensive as she ever was, albeit for slightly different reasons.
Ranks and Offices
- Door Marshal of the Clan Council
Family Life
Siblings
- Ojitar: Ojitar is Emma's eldest brother and Clan Leader of the Gold Dragons. He has everything Emma doesn't: he gets to fight, to protect people, to rule. Emma tries not to be bitter, however, because Ojitar is also the future. She used to cling to the futile hope that maybe, just maybe, he would help change the Gold Dragon people. After all, his mother is a Ticanee and a warrior and he must understand how strong women can be! Of course, no such changing ever did occur, but she loves and respects her brother nonetheless. They get along better now that she is able to be who she wants to be in the Bear clan.
- Judanus: Emma's second eldest brother, and a half sibling like Ojitar, Judanus was all right up until he married Luna and joined the Griffon clan. Emma always knew he was going to become a gruffle but she never understood how much she'd hate him when he did. He fought for Scirlut, he took Gold Dragon lives! She can't forgive him. Moreover, she doesn't want to. In her heart, Judanus Firgalik is dead. Only Judanus Corinala, gruffle traitor, remains.
- Lilana: Emma barely knew her adopted sister Lilana, but what she knew of her, she loved. Everyone loved Lilana, really. It was hard not to. She was so sad and so sweet and so kind; even Emma was gentle with her. When Lilana grew up, she married Lord Dedalion Shadina and became a noblewoman. She was widowed, but eventually she remarried Lord Zerasmus Didoron and died in childbirth. Emma thinks this is the worst way for a woman to go, and though she didn't admit it was because of Lilana, she spent a good many months brooding.
- Emil: Emma is often at odds with her brother Emil, and their relationship is nothing short of stormy. Much like Emma, he's bossy and stubborn; unlike Emma, he has a world of opportunity before him. And what does he do with it? Nothing. In Emma's opinion, he can hardly even lift a sword. Emma always finds herself screaming at Emil, often out of sheer frustration.
- Jaline: For some reason, Emma's elder sister Jaline, the very paragon of womanliness herself, has never pressured Emma to be anything she is not, and Emma loves her more for that. Emma knows that Jaline is very clever indeed, and often she turns to Jaline for advice. She doesn't always like Jaline's advice, but usually she listens to it -- at least long enough for her to cool down and think. Emma doesn't know what she'd do without Jaline, nor does she like imagining it.
- Tazira: Emma's younger sister Tazira is everything she dislikes in most Gold Dragon ladies. Tazira is utterly and hopelessly spoiled, basking in attention and luxury like she has nothing better to do with her life. She never fights for what she wants; she never has to. She just turns a sad face on people and they give her the world. Emma lectures Tazira incessantly, but often her 'lectures' turn into a lot of shouting (and, for Tazira's part, sobbing).
Marriage
- Empyrean: While Emma did not ever want to marry outside the Gold Dragon clan, nor even outside the Firgalik family, she has found a strange sense of contentment with her husband Empyrean. He is patient (sometimes overly so, in Emma's opinion), tolerant of her rather brash ways, and actually seems to hold some affection for his new wife. He will be the Head of the Teranzik household, and has told Emma that she is strong and confident and will make a great Lady of the House. She is pleased that he wishes to work with her, as opposed to just making her sit about on some cushioned pedestal or another while periodically lavishing her with gifts but otherwise ignoring her. She is convinced that their alliance will benefit her new clan of the Bear, as well as the Republic at large.
Children
None yet. Emma used to be completely opposed to the idea of children, and doesn't wish to be simply a baby machine like so many of her female Gold Dragon brethren. However, she understands the importance of making heirs for the Teranzik house, which is currently littered with neo nobles. She is going to have a heck of a time scheduling war around making children!
Accomplishments & Successes
- Emma endured sixteen years of being a Gold Dragon woman who wished to be a warrior like her brothers and father. She never hid this fact, either. It's quite an accomplishment that she was never punished worse than the random beating here and there and having her various war accoutrements confiscated.
Scandals & Failures
Scandals
- Being a Gold Dragon warrior woman. That, of course, didn't go over very well. But she endured!
Failures
- Not changing anyone's mind about being a Gold Dragon warrior woman.
Enemies
- All Griffons. Even a clan switch cannot dull Emma's ire for those dirty gruffles. Yeck.
- Noblewomen who Don't Do Anything but pop out babies and get spoiled.
Allies
- Thaddia Elianik. Emma can think of no one else she'd rather be back to back in a battle with than Princess Thaddia Elianik. She shares almost everything of note that happens in her life with her best friend, who she affectionately calls 'Thads,' and the warrior princess is right up there with Jaline in who Emma is willing to take advice from (or, at the least, listen to it). The fact that she's about to marry a worthless (in her mind) Cockatrice cad like Banian makes her seethe. SEETHE!
