Official Statement

My name is Emma, and I was a slave of Hralib. We all grieve his loss terribly! Even those of us who hated him knew that if he died, we would be presumed guilty of murder and executed or else sold off and separated. What slave would want this? I would not speak so boldly of what I know, but Mistress Pevifa has commanded it. So I must say that Vitara Fissia once said that she would rather Hralib's slaves all died than Hashi inherit them if he meant to give her away to another man. Well, just yesterday, I overheard my master's son, Hashi, tell his father that he was going to give Fissia away to another man as a gift. Perhaps she killed my master so that we would all be executed, and her faithless husband could not inherit us as his property.

Background

All her life, Emma wanted to be a warrior. To this day, she is fascinated with weapons, armor, and war stories of all kinds. But the Gold Dragon Clan wouldn't allow her to fight. Her father forbid it, and Clan Leader Ojitar forbid it too. On the day of the invasion, though, Emma thought her chance had come. In the chaos, she donned armor, and disguised as a boy, took to the city walls. Unfortunately, she was not trained well enough, and was no match for the Shamibelians who easily captured her, and with her the gate she was guarding. She blames herself for the Fall of Anarinuell, and she hopes no one will ever know about her role in it.

It was that humiliation that allowed her to fall under Hralib's sway. He knew her secret, and made her into a beautician, as if to conceal her inner shame. If only she hadn't loved him. . .

Emma Round One

Round One Reveal

Emma knows that Fissia was very nervous on the Night of Obala's Pride when she came to get done up for the party.

Fissia seems to have had something against Throgana, because it annoyed Fissia to see Emma getting Throgana ready for the party, and told her that she was just a stupid slave who was going to ruin her nails with her nasty nail-biting habit anyway, so why bother making her pretty?

Emma has heard that Fissia once said aloud that she would rather see all of Hralib's slaves dead than see Hashi inherit them if he gave Fissia away--and the other day, Emma overheard Hashi telling Hralib he was thinking of giving Fissia to a new husband as a gift.

Hralib wanted to marry Tabitha off to one of his old friends, but she got it in her head that she was of the new 'liberal' generation, and was in love with Lainath Samiroon, who through a convoluted set of legal maneuvers is a Shamibelian Warrior with some Firan blood. Hralib said that he'd let her marry Lainath "over my dead body" so it seems she gave him his wish!

The pair of earrings in Hralib's pocket were worn by Tabitha on the Night of Obala's Pride.

Emma knows that ever since Pevifa got pregnant, she became unreasonably jealous of anyone who paid attention to Hralib, like Throgana. In fact, Pevifa intervened when Throgana was dancing with Hralib and slapped her.

After the altercation with Throgana on the dance floor, Pevifa and Hralib briefly argued, then danced together. Trouble in paradise? What did he say to Pevifa while they were dancing that made her want to kill him?

Emma knows that the rug Hralib was found wrapped up in was an old Tibenya heirloom that Pevifa brought with her to Anarinuell after the invasion.

Emma and Throgana were good friends, and she helped Throgana get ready for the Night of Obala's pride, and even painted her nails, which Throgana was trying to grow out.

Everyone knows that Throgana took Emma under her wing as one of Hralib's new slaves, and that the two were very close. Why would Emma kill her friend?

Everyone knows that Emma was one of Hralib's favorite slaves, and that he often praised her for discarding her noble ways and actually learning a craft at which she could make herself useful. Why would Emma kill her master, when he was so good to her?

Everyone knows that with Hralib dead, Vitara Pevifa and Vitara Nobifa are about to lose all the slaves that work their estates and bring money in to their coffers. Why would they want to kill their husband?

Round One Conceal

In actuality, Emma was in love with Hralib. She knows the other Firans will hate her and call her a collaborator. Maybe they will even kill her, like they killed Throgana. But the truth is that she loved her master, and is grief-stricken beyond compare that he is dead.

It's true that Hralib kept Emma apart from her beloved father, making each of them live with a different wife. But in some ways, it was a relief not to have her father's judgment on her. He wanted Emma to hate Hralib as much as he did, and she just couldn't do it.

Even so, Emma did sometimes risk seeing her father, in spite of the fact that Hralib forbid it. But she would always confess these meetings to Hralib, and he would forgive her, even though he beat Jalil for it.

It's also true that Emma was close to being able to afford to buy her freedom. But by Shamibelian law, if she was free, she would have to leave her Master forever, and Emma could not bear the thought of it. She was really saving up her money to help free her father. But now, without Hralib, maybe she really should go. That is, if she survives tonight.

Jalil did come to see Emma the Night of Obala's Pride. He told her that he wanted to kill Throgana, and asked for her help, but Emma refused.

Emma knows how to forge permits. Hralib never tolerated such disobedience in his slaves. If he found out, or Throgana found out and was going to tell him, she'd have had to kill them both to save her own life.

Even though Emma is a Gold Dragon, she actually fought on the walls of Anarinuell, disguised as a boy in armor against her father's orders, and against her clan leader's orders. Emma feels like she fought so poorly that day, that it contributed to the Fall of Anarinuell, so she doesn't want anyone to know.

When Emma was fighting on the walls of Anarinuell, she saw the so-called "heroism" that War Lord Forlanis displayed on the battlefield.

Emma Round Two

Round Two Reveal

Hralib found Empyrean to be a nearly worthless slave, and forced him to learn to weave rope to "make himself useful" and gave him a lot of blue dyed pema to work with. The ropes that held the rug around Hralib's body were blue.

Nobifa made a very public showing of her upset that she hadn't yet gotten pregnant by Hralib, and she blamed his attentions on Throgana for it.

On the other hand, Emma happens to know that Nobifa was taking herbs to keep from getting pregnant--in Shamibelian culture, a marriage is not official until the first child is born. Could Nobifa have killed Hralib to keep him from finding out about her treachery?

Hralib was trying to get his wife Nobifa pregnant, but did not trust the fertility potions that she was taking, so he commanded Melani to acquire some for him. (Hralib talked in bed.) What if Melani poisoned the potions that she gave to Emma's master?

Sarina was, up until just yesterday, Hralib's slave, and their relationship was troubled.

Emma knows that Sarina did not want Hralib to sell her, that she had fallen slightly under his sway, and that she exhibited signs of heartbreak at being sold away like chattle. She may have felt betrayed enough to kill him.

Sarina and Throgana hated one another, and often got into fist fights. It's one of the reasons Sarina was sold--maybe she decided to get even with Throgana for getting rid of her.

Sarina had taken a form of Endab that she learned from the Bonduins and turned it into a new martial arts form with the use of torches. Wasn't Hralib burned on his face and hands?

Aldrin is in love with Emma and was viciously jealous of Hralib touching her. If Emma finds out that Aldrin killed her master, she will never forgive him.

Jalil cautioned the Firans against killing Hralib, because he knew about the Shamibelian law that if a master is murdered by a slave, all of his slaves are considered conspirators and put to death. Jalil did not want to risk his daughter's life that way.

Melani swore vengeance upon Hralib when he allowed her mother and father to be sacrificed to Obala after the invasion.

Keeli is a tattle-tale who gets other Firans in trouble with the Shamibelians all the time.

Round Two Conceal

Emma hopes that she is pregnant with Hralib's child. She knows her father will be furious with her, but it's her fondest wish.

Emma worries that her father might actually try to kill her, rather than let her give birth to a haffie.

Giving birth to a haffie can't be so bad. After all, Lainath told Emma that he raped her mother once, during a raid long ago, and that the result was Emma's sister Tazira. Tazira doesn't look like a haffie, and certainly, Jalil thinks that Tazira is his daughter, but Emma thinks that Lainath might be telling the truth.

Forlanis won the prestigious 'stinging fly' medal of honor for bravery on the battlefield, and never shuts up about it. But Forlanis wasn't quite as brave on the walls of Anarinuell as he'd like everyone to believe. Sure, three Firan soldiers died at the top of the wall, but unbeknownst to his colleagues, they died from a ballista bolt that passed through them. It was a Firan Friendly Fire incident that Forlanis was all too willing to take credit for.

Emma is missing a jar of silver cosmetics paint from her bag.

Round Two Additional Goals

  1. Get a healer to help ensure that you really are pregnant by Hralib
  2. Find a way to tell Daddy
  3. Find a way to use what you know about Forlanis to your advantage

Emma Round Three

Round Three Reveal

Jalil was horrified to find Throgana happily living amongst the Shamibelians, and several times, asked her to help him 'put Throgana out of her misery'.

Jalil vehemently objected to the mentoring role that Throgana took in teaching his daughter Emma to be a good slave.

Jalil once loved Throgana. The idea that she could choose a goat like Hralib over a Clan Leader like Jalil is something that his pride probably couldn't take. Is it a wonder that Jalil might try to kill her and her lover?

Round Three Conceal

If Emma's cosmetics were poisoned, Throgana might have died from them. Throgana was the last person that Emma got ready the Night of Obala's Pride, and the only one onto whom she put nail-polish. Worse, Throgana was an avid nail-biter when she was nervous.
