Role of a FacHead

Faction heads on Firan are players in position to facilitate role-play within their clan or faction. This is a strictly OOC position that has no relevance to the IC status of each faction head. Their role is as follows:

  1. Greeting new players. Aside from a presence on the help channel they should be active on their own clan or faction channel in welcoming new players to the clan or faction, explaining (where required) some of the background and details of the clan or faction and generally directing new players to the appropriate news files.
  2. Assisting new players into role-play. Whether this be role-playing with the new player themselves or prodding other players to do likewise they should be willing to where possible aid our newer players to role-play their characters and get to grips with the Firan culture.
  3. TP integration. Whilst the Wizards remain the primary focus of plots upon the game, faction heads do act as tinyplot co-ordinators for their faction. As such they should feel free to keep track of in clan or faction tinyplots, liaise with their clan leader/clan proxy and staff to help establish small tinyplots and generally prod the Wizards if they are aware of players in need of something to spice up their lives.
  4. Flying the flag. Faction heads should generally represent their clan to the player base on things like channels, BBS and the like. They should hopefully develop a good working relationship with their clan leader and/or clan proxies to that end.
  5. Updating characters. Faction heads have the duty of actively encouraging their faction to update the characters of their faction that are currently in the update queue. For that purpose, they will receive an @mail alert whenever someone of their faction is rostered. It is their duty to call for updates in their weekly newsletters.
  6. Staff liaison. Lastly they and other players should feel free to use them as a conduit where needed to pass things on to the Wizards. Whilst we do have a very active Help channel, and the @request system, general comments from the faction heads to staff will always be considered (as they are from any player)
  7. Write Newsletter/Memo. Once a week, pick a day and stick to it, FacHeads are expected to put out a 'memo'. This will compile all the events of the clan or faction (and Firan as a whole), activities, and any other information that they'd know (IC and OOC; eg TPs). The steps for writing a newsletter are as follows:
    1. Collect information from your faction
    2. Write the newsletter
    3. Post the newsletter onto the wiki in the appropriate spot
    4. Post a copy and/or a link to the newsletter on your faction's b-board (19 for Republic FacHeads)
    5. @mail the link to Lisa and Ginny so you will get CP for the submission.

Additional Information

There is a restricted FacHead channel, which all FacHeads will be added to, and removed from, when and if necessary. It's one of those channels, which you are supposed to remain on, as much as possible. There are also rewards for being a Faction Head. The system for CP is as follows; You get 3 CP for an average week, 4 CP for a good week, and 5 CP for an excellent week. Most weeks are 'good,' so don't be alarmed if you don't get 3 CP every single time.

CP for newsletters will be awarded sporadically. It might be as many as four weeks before CP are given out, but it is closely tracked and recorded, and your contributions will never be forgotten. If a mistake is made, just let Ginny know and she can look into it for you.

Faction heads have the ability to use the herald system to spread news about their faction. This news should in most cases be taken directly from the newsletter. Remember that faction head is an OOC position, so if inappropriate news is added, the faction head will be reprimanded OOCly. Faction heads should be mindful not to bias any added news due to their character's IC views or position.

Faction heads are elected for a term of three months, after which time re-elections will be held to allow others the opportunity for the position. The current faction head will be automatically considered to be running again, and if there are others who wish to be faction head, elections will be held once more.

Newsletter Tips and Tricks

  • Whenever people contribute news items to your newsletter, you should @cpoints/nominate them for their kindness. This will encourage them to continue contributing, and a PHer will give them a community point for their efforts. You can (and should) @cpoints/nominate a group of contributors all at once.
  • Sometimes it is hard to get contributions every single week even still. What you can do is find a character in your clan or faction and interview them, including the information in a profile or spotlight. Alternately or additionally, you could find a useful but underused command or policy file and highlight it in your newsletter as well. The goal is to make a good newsletter every single week and it's not that hard if you are creative about it. Ask a wizard or a fellow faction head for help if you need to.
  • Always @mail your newsletters to the wizards in charge of Faction Heads (currently both Ginny and Lisa), put them on your clan bboard, and also add a wiki page for them, making sure to link and wikify key-words and names in the text when you do so. Keep the wiki updated - the clan newsletters sections are basically yours to man, and they should be tended to regularly.
  • A Faction Head's term of service is three months, but there is no term-limit - one can be re-elected as many times as one wants, as long as the people don't choose a different person in the election! The elections are held using the @ballots system - 'help @ballots' on the game.
  • There are various good resources for TP design on both the wiki and the IB. Check out these articles for more information: TinyPlots: Adam's Guidelines for Player Run TPs, TinyPlot Guidelines for Player Helpers, TP Design Class - FH and PHers, TinyPlot & Event Definitions, TinyPlots: From Design to Realisation, and TinyPlot Worksheet. Also, don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it!
  • When @mailing your newsletters as mentioned above, please use this format: '<FACTION NAME> <OOC MONTH/DAY/YEAR> Newsletter' in the subject line.
  • Treat certain newsletter contributions with a discerning eye. If someone encourages you to put something about dissing someone because of something that happened to them ICly, you should think twice. Try to use big reasons, instead - like those from speeches, or even better, from GM emits that guide NPC reactions. Remember that you are expected to reinforce theme, and not to give IC outlets for information that is not already widely known - you are making an OOC newsletter.
