Official Statement

As you all know, I am War Lord Forlanis Vettle, Stinging Fly of Anarinuell, Son of Anobis, and I am soon to become a priest of Obala. Therefore, Priest Tatomir has sent me here to afford each of you the opportunity to purge the guilt of your soul before finding death in this arena during tonight's gladiator games. I am to get a statement from each of you telling me your name and everything you know about the murder of Governor Hralib--and his slave Throgana, though who really cares about her? Let's start with you, Czar. Everybody knows you're a trusted slave, so you have permits to go and do pretty much anything--you'd best eliminate suspicion of yourself right from the start.

Background

Forlanis is a fierce warrior. He was even awarded the prestigious 'Stinging Fly' medal for his heroics on the walls of Anarinuell. And he's not about to let anyone forget it.

Forlanis is a proud man, and brags of his accomplishments in subtle ways, or even bombastic ways if he can get away with it. He's a back-stabber, a schemer, and a cultural apologist! He wants everyone to see the Darkness of Obala.

Relationships

  • Tatomir -- The priest Forlanis most wants to serve and impress
  • Scithvor -- Forlanis' rival
  • Nobifa -- Forlanis' sister, and Hralib's second wife
  • Katriana -- Forlanis' slave girl
  • Puria -- Forlanis' brothel slave. She's not earning enough.

Goals

  1. "Prove" that Scithvor killed Hralib so as to knock him out of the running for the priesthood.
  2. If you can't prove that Scithvor killed Hralib and Throgana, solve the crime so that Tatomir will be impressed with you.
  3. Convince Tatomir that you should be made a priest of Obala and taught all their secret powers.
  4. Figure out which Shamibelian man you will leave your slaves to once you become a priest.
  5. Pimp out Puria. She's not making enough money for you.
  6. Boast often of your heroics on the walls of Anarinuell where you killed three Firan warriors at once, with your own hand!
  7. Encourage others to be leeched for spiritual healing

Forlanis Round One

Round One Reveal

Sarina and Throgana never got along because Throgana thought that Sarina might usurp her place as Hralib's favorite slave, and the jealousy was mutual.

Everyone knows that although Czar is a loyal slave, he was very unhappy about his master Malentez' plan to impregnate Savanna. Discontented slaves cause trouble, and even commit murder.

Everyone knows that Osirus is at least a capable gladiator--it's possible that he could have taken down even a strong warrior like Hralib by himself.

Everyone knows that Zaridos has spent his time in enslavement training as a gladiator and could have taken Hralib unawares.

The Firan Princes are a bunch of bumbling idiots. If the Firans only knew how badly their leaders screwed up, they would lynch the lot of them. In truth, the Shamibelians knew everything that the Firans were planning in that final battle, and were able to crush them because of it.

Hralib felt as if Ladonna had an unnaturally strong attachment to her son, Saelus, and that she'd make a better slave if the boy were sold off to someone else. So, he suggested to Lainath that he sell the boy to Forlanis. Ladonna has always hated Hralib for it.

Round One Conceal

Hralib thought Forlanis was too good at managing slaves to become a priest, and tried to convince Tatomir not to accept him as an initiate. This infuriated Forlanis. Nobody, but nobody, is going to interfere with Forlanis' plans to become a priest.

Forlanis used to live on Nobifa's land, and when Hralib married her, he kicked Forlanis out. Forlanis never forgave him. However, in his defense, it must be said that Shamibelian men leave their sisters' lands all the time, and somehow, society goes on without murder.

Forlanis believed that Throgana intentionally made faulty armor for him during last year's war season, and it almost got him killed on the battlefield. She was a double-agent, Forlanis is sure of it, and so he suspects that the Firans killed her and Hralib both as a precursor to something big.

Forlanis has been training Katriana as an assassin.

Katriana carries a concealed knife on her thigh.

Forlanis knows that Tatomir has been experimenting with a ritual of Obala that can re-animate the dead. In fact, Forlanis has been following Tatomir around, and is pretty certain he did the ritual yesterday. Hralib forbade such experimentation, but now that he's dead, the priests can do whatever they want.

Sure, Forlanis mused that he'd like to be Governor of Anarinuell. Who wouldn't want such a prestigious post? But Scithvor, Malentez, Ruffialo and Tatomir all wanted it more. Would they want it enough to kill, is the question.

Round One Props

  • Sword
  • Stinging Fly of Anarinuell Medal of Honor
  • Pad and Pen

Forlanis Round Two

Round Two Reveal

Bivin and Hralib were actually getting along better recently because Hralib agreed to try to get Bivin's sister Fara out of slavery.

Hralib always told Ruffialo that he was too soft on the Firans and that's why he'd never get very far in life. Ruffialo took great offense to this.

Some of the firebombs that Ruffialo used for his bombing runs over the remaining Free Firan Cities have gone missing, and Hralib was livid about it, blaming him for the loss.

Ruffialo tracked ash into his tent when he finally got home, in the wee hours of the morning on the Night of Obala's Pride.

Tatomir has been experimenting with his new powers to re-animate the dead.

Hralib lost his Skull-of-Taria cup a few days before the Night of Obala's Pride, and was complaining bitterly about it. He suspected one of his slaves took it.

Perdita spends a lot of time in the Slave Temple where no Shamibelian but Tatomir can go. She could be plotting anything there, and if anyone was going to chance upon Throgana and kill her in the temple, it'd be Perdita.

Inaya was angry with Hralib for choosing the Temple District to clear for his wife--not because she cares about the Firan Gods, but because she believed that all the temples to the ungrateful Firan pantheon should be burned down.

Forlanis suspects that on the Night of Obala's Pride, Inaya went to the Temple District to burn the temples down so that no Firan could ever worship in them again. If Hralib came upon her, a struggle would most certainly have occurred.

Anorna thought it was an insult that Hralib was made Governor of Anarinuell instead of her master, Ruffialo. Obala knows she has had plenty to prove to him now that she's back, and much to make up for, especially her earlier 'escape', so mightn't she have killed Hralib to impress her master?

Hralib believed Ania's children were actually captured and in the city, and he was starting to hone in on them. Brizo is very protective of children, and would have killed to stop him.

Aldrin considered himself not just Fidelia's political heir, but her religious heir, and he considers himself 'High Priest of the Firan Realms' now that she is gone.

Forlanis has heard that Aldrin, Akiva and Torianos have theorized that using a firebomb on the palace could burn all the bodies at once, and they can give them proper funeral rites that way.

Torianos refused to give up his faith in the Firan pantheon, and preached that Hralib should be struck down for desecrating the Temple District by converting the temples into a complex of mansions for his wife Pevifa.

Forlanis and Katriana believe that Torianos has been secretly burning the bodies of human sacrifices to Obala with proper funeral rites. What if Hralib came upon him burning bodies, and they struggled? Perhaps Torianos knocked him into the fire and killed him--that would explain the ashes, and the burn marks on Hralib's body.

Forlanis and Katriana know that on her last trading run, Caree said that Hralib was a cheap bastard when he refused to pay her full price for a slave she delivered to him.

Round Two Conceal

Forlanis doesn't think a slave is worthy unless they're willing to die, or kill, for their master.

Forlanis is very curious about what the actual penalty would be for one Shamibelian warrior to murder another.

Forlanis definitely had murder on his mind last night, and tonight. On the Night of Obala's Pride, Forlanis wrote out a note for Katriana which said 'On my signal, kill him.'

Katriana was thrilled to be sold to Forlanis, and eager to get away from Hralib and Throgana, whom she hated. If Forlanis told her to kill them, it would be Katriana's pleasure to do so. That's one thing that Forlanis loves about his slave girl.

Forlanis wasn't quite as brave on the walls of Anarinuell as he'd like everyone to believe. Sure, three Firan soldiers died at the top of the wall, but unbeknownst to his colleagues, they died from a ballista bolt that passed through them. It was a Firan Friendly Fire incident that Forlanis was all too willing to take credit for.

Katriana has never stopped grieving for the sons she lost, that Hralib killed because they were sick. Once Forlanis bought Saelus, and made Katriana take care of him, she has it in her mind that the boy is really her son.

Round Two Props

Round Two Additional Goals

  1. Keep anyone from finding out that you didn't really deserve the "Stinging Fly of Anarinuell" medal of honor
  2. Find out the secret of Tatomir's re-animation ritual, and see if you can use it yourself
  3. If not, perhaps you can find a way of blackmailing Tatomir into making you a priest. After all, it's very convenient that Hralib outlawed the re-animation, Tatomir did it anyway, and then Tatomir just "happened" to find Hralib's dead body
  4. Convince Tatomir that they should atone for the death of Hralib by sacrificing a child to Obala
  5. Pick out child candidates for the slaughter

Forlanis Round Three

Round Three Reveal

This morning, Forlanis helped Tatomir investigate the murders. There was a flask of fertility potions that Hralib had in his pocket. It was the same flask that several people witnessed Melani giving to him. Tatomir had it tested, and it was poisoned.

However, the flask didn't look as if anyone drank from it yet.

While investigating, today, Forlanis found a trail of blood from the Temple District (Pevifa's Plantation) all the way back to Nobifa's home (formerly Kamnestra Hall) where Brizo was staying.

It's ironic. The City of Anarinuell probably could have withstood a siege for years on end. But the Shamibelians sent Prince Lucas a message offering to let him rule as Ranivor, and to turn the Firan Realms into a protected client state of the Shamibelian Empire. All they asked for were the lives of the Clan Council and a slave tribute.

Forlanis is fairly certain that this persuaded Prince Lucas to surrender the city prematurely.

Forlanis really doesn't feel guilty about not keeping their word, because Lucas didn't hand over the whole Clan Council to them as promised.

Round Three Conceal

Forlanis was actually planning to have Scithvor assassinated last night.

Unfortunately, he lost the note that he was supposed to pass to Katriana, and decided that discretion would be the better part of valor. Tonight seems like a better time to kill him anyway.

Round Three Additional Goals
