Overview
A young man with a sour expression, Furen has black eyes, short thin black hair and olive skin. Furen appears to weigh about 130 pounds and stands about 5'5" tall. Once a small child, he's grown into a slim, even wiry, young man. His large eyes, set above too-gaunt cheeks, appear sunken, and rarely is his gaze anything but accusatory, the entire set of his face sullen. His tan skin often cedes to an unhealthy yellow, beneath which the outline of his bones is just visible; sharp both of build and of look, he's unlikely ever to turn any eyes. When he moves, he slinks, and he has the habit of scuffing his feet against the ground.
Furen is a thoroughly unpleasant person. He hates everyone and everything, his first impulse in any given situation is to hit someone inna face, and what precisely his role is in the Old City is difficult to determine. Perhaps "resident jerk." Although supposedly competent in some area, he has such broad contempt for most folk's intelligence (despite being, well, just a thug), that it's sometimes difficult to determine what work he will do and what he won't.
Ranks & Offices
Furen is supposedly the de-facto leader of the Istems, although he doesn't seem to do much leaderly, other than sometimes grunt orders or inform his fellow Istems that they're making him mad. Niobe seems to be deferred to more often.
Family Life
Parents
- Quenia Cellini - Furen's mum is all right, for all that she nearly starved him to death when he was a kid. Still, if she hadn't, he'd be a Cellini, not an Istems, which is much less excellent.
- Furachi Istems - Furachi is probably dead. Furen supposedly kind of looks like him, only ugly. That's about it.
Siblings
Furen is an only child.
Marriage
Furen is unmarried. He may remain that way.
Children
Furen has no children. It is unlikely that anyone will want to breed with him.
Accomplishments
He has fought a bear with his bare hands.

Enemies
- Guards in general: Furen hates the guard. He thinks that they are a bunch of weakling cowards who not only will attempt to destroy your life for petty theft, but will also go at you with spears and etc, even if you're unarmed. Even if you aren't doing anything. If they were really tough, they wouldn't be so scared to go at it hand to hand. He thinks the guard make a point of murdering/sending to the front forever people for pathetic reasons out of that fear.
- Just about everyone else - It's a rare person Furen won't treat like a threat.
Allies
- Niobe Istems - Niobe is sort of Furen's right hand woman-thing in the Istems, but Furen doesn't altogether trust her. People like her too much, probably like her better than they like him.
- Jariko Istems - Furen's best friend, in so far as he has best friends. They hit each other a lot. But it's friendly.
- Shade - Furen doesn't trust her either, but he tolerates her, so. Well.
- Asalan - Mostly, he's one of the one or two people Furen will try not to get angry. For now.
Scandals
Pickpocketing Children
This is one of Furen's two convictions. He attempted to pickpocket a kid and threatened another one. For this, he was fined 600,000 stenis, which he still cannot quite get over. (His other conviction was walking by the Lokaranis Academy while it had that whole Red Bloom thing going.)
Miscellany
Furen is perhaps not taken very seriously by anyone. There are no rumors whatsoever about what thug name he might be hiding under. He spends a lot of time in the Sailor's Nook, making sure no waller wanders in past him, which has led to him getting a reputation as just a very grouchy doorman who's none too bright or frightening.
