Platform

Firan runs on stock TinyMUX 2.6 with the "firan" option enabled. TinyMUX's author Stephen Dennis has lovingly hand-tooled MUX2 to make Firan run like something out of NASCAR. The game runs on saga.legendary.org, a leased 2.4 GHz Celeron with 1.5 GB RAM (and it consumes 15% of the CPU and 40% of the RAM on average). Saga is hosted in a secure, environmentally-controlled data center by ServerMatrix.com, a subsidiary of The Planet. The ISP provides a Tier 4 SLA (100% uptime via uninterrupted network, power, and redundant connectivity).

Activity

Firan is a busy game, with many players and staff. The following sections explain some of the ways we measure Firan's activity. We've included a number of charts from the game, where we collect data for analysis.

In general, we maintain a tight community of about 170 unique players (verified by email address and IP address), a number in accordance with Dunbar's Number of a mean community size of around 150 people. About a third of our playerbase attends FiranCon every year.

Player Activity

Here's Firan's entry from Brent's MUstats Login Tracker[1]. Take a look at how many players we usually have connected to the game. (Brent's page has been down as of late. We're hoping he'll bring it back up!)

We track the number of logins we get, and since we have alts, we keep track of both the number of characters and players that connect. This is the output of the "@active" command:

Firan has a 10-day inactivity "reap" or "idle-out". That means that we re-roster any character who has not connected in 10 days. This makes the 10-day mark a reasonably close measure of our player base.

As of August 22, 2002, our record number of characters on the game at any time was 212.

We also measure our activity by how many players earn peer votes for good role-playing. Around 270 characters earn player votes for good role-playing in a given week. That's around 170 different players. Here's an example of the bulletin board post that goes up every week (from January 12, 2007).

Wizard Staff Activity

Our player helper staff and wizard staff completes an enormous number of player requests every month. We keep statistics and can report that our annual throughput has increased without exception for the last ten years and we've tried to keep our service level (average hours to complete a request) reasonable. This is in addition to the normal work they do writing and debugging code, enhancing the thematic material, writing new help and news files, running plots, giving players personal attention, and so on.

Here are some figures from our statistics for 2006:

         Total for 2006: 11913 completed requests.
                         1d16h average to close.
==============================================================================

March's time-to-close figures may have felt the impact of us pushing to complete some long-open requests. June's service level is surely impacted by staff being occupied with preparation for FiranCon (Memorial Day Weekend).

Here's a summary of past years:

Total for 2006: 11913 completed requests. 1d16h average to close.
Total for 2005: 10882 completed requests. 19h29m average to close.
Total for 2004: 10357 completed requests. 13h36m average to close.
Total for 2003: 9794 completed requests. 8h48m average to close.
Total for 2002: 9016 completed requests. 7h36m average to close.
Total for 2001: 4990 completed requests. 20h58m average to close.
Total for 2000: 2363 completed requests. 2d17h average to close.

(We started tracking requests in August 1999 so we do not have complete annual data for 1997-1999.)

Player Helper Staff Activity

We keep similar statistics for our player helpers. Here's the statistics for 2006.

==============================================================================

         Total for 2006: 5932 completed requests.
                         2d10h average to close.
==============================================================================

Many of the easier and shorter tasks that wizards used to do have been handed to player helpers. Here's a summary over the years:

Total for 2006: 5932 completed requests. 2d10h average to close.
Total for 2005: 4607 completed requests. 3d14h average to close.
Total for 2004: 4445 completed requests. 2d1h average to close.
Total for 2003: 4162 completed requests. 1d16h average to close.
Total for 2002: 2875 completed requests. 1d21h average to close.

The @helpreq system for Player Helpers was instituted in June 2001, so we don't have annual summaries before 2002.

In summary, FiranMUX's staff works hard to take care of its playerbase!

Requests and Jobs

Firan's staff does a great deal of work. If you're interested in finding out more about how much we do, take a look at the Requests and Jobs Stats page.
