Overview

Garen has a dark brooding look about him, his mouth seldom curling into a smile, and his eyes always scanning the area for danger, or for prey. He has the lean muscled body of a hunter, though it is riddled with scars from battles of his youth, and he occasionally favors his right leg -- especially when it rains.

Garen might properly be thought of as Robin Hood with a batmanish psycho-streak. The trauma of losing his parents when he was a child haunts him still, and he's never fully socialized -- feeling out of place most of the time. He has a proclivity for doing things on instinct and going into situations by himself. Since he assasinated Kenirikas, most of the Clan of the Cockatrice considers him a villain. In truth, Garen is shy and can be very gentle. He has deep guilt and profound regrets over what he did in the past, and is an _extremely_ pious man. He is violently loyal to Elianos and Akinita, and he protects their families as if they were his own (and with regard to Akinita, her family _is_ his family, but Garen's detachment forces him to see it almost as if the children they produced together were more her family than his.

Garen began life as a Bear, growing up in Garusani. When he was nine years old, his parents left to join the new clan in the new settlement of Emran, taking their son with them. Their small party was raided, Garen's parents were killed. He hid. He hid, he wandered the forest, and lived off the land for two years before he made his way back to Garusani. He found the city stifiling -- Garen was a woodsman, a man who loved the hunt and the forest. He played games, that child Garen, and honed his skill with his bow. These skills would serve him well.

He was chosen -- because he was so adept at shooting -- to hunt the beast with the other heroes. He was the Bear clan's representative. Not all was well in the hunt for the beast, however, and Garen's belief -- his utterly firm resolve -- that Kenirikas was a traitor, murderer of Darimon and kidnapper of Eve and Velani, saw Garen in a mess of trouble. Heated, he stormed Kenirikas' palace and killed him. Garen, too, was a murderer -- a stain that he felt tainted his children, his wife.

Elianos gave Garen a generalship during the invasion, a mantle Garen notoriously did not like. He said he disliked saluting. It was at this helm that Garen met Akinita and sought to teach her a lesson. She pierced his shoulder with an arrow instead. Riss, Akinita's father, disliked the match; Garen was a criminal, to be exiled, but in the wake of the heroes' victory, in recaptured Anarinuell, Akinita wed Garen.

In 20 A.U., Garen and the rest of the Heroes left Anarinuell on a mission to the Vrelanders. They have not been seen since, though the Nekaht were rumored to have encountered them.

Family Life

Parents

  • Berref(d)

Garen has fond memories of his father, especially of his father teaching him to hunt with a bow and arrow, but the most vivid memory of his father is the way the bandits beat him to death with a club while Garen watched from the treetop above. Garen seems to think he could have, or should have, done something to stop it.

  • Onti(d)

He was fond of her, and has vivid memories of her tucking him in at night, but the most vivid memory he has of her is that of the bandits who slit her throat and had sex with her dead body while he watched in horror and trepidation, hidden in the foliage of a nearby tree. He has never forgiven himself for allowing it, and seems to feel that at nine years old he might have somehow stopped the raiders.

Siblings

None.

Marriage

Akinita and Garen have a loving relationship, and that Akinita loved Garen at the worst times in his life means that Garen will be forever loyal to her. He is not threated by her status as a clan leader, for he knows that it is a job he would hate. He does, however, hate authority in general, and does not fit in with noble life. Garen would have been content to take Akinita and build a cottage in the woods where their family could live in seclusion. Instead, he is compelled to live in the city of Anarinuell, which slowly drains upon his peace of mind.

Children

Garen tries to treat his daughter, Eliana, as if she were an equal, because he respects her mother, and feels that if he didn't treat her gruffly that she would feel he was patronizing her or treating her differently because she is a girl. Garen has a stern way of teaching, and doesn't engage in pleasantries, and thus, though he does love his daughter, she often interprets this as dissaproval. Garen does not know how to show his love for the girl other than by treating her as if she were an adult and helping her to be self-sufficient. Eliana married a prince, Vahlgellan. For a time, she was Queen, even, but when Vahlgellan's title was revoked after his failure to keep peace between the Gold Dragon Clan and the Bear Clan in 24 A.U. They were both exiled from the city of Anarinuell, though Vahlgellan tried to return to the city and take the Hydra clan in 33 A.U. Eliana remained where she was. Her whereabouts are uncertain, but it is believed that she is still in Caldera. It was rumored that Eliana had something to do with the Apostasy, that the Rissik house was trying to take the Chimera clan back.

Garen does not understand his middle son at all. When Eliana or Akinita does something he doesn't understand, he chalks it up to their being women (a creature he has long since decided might well be another species). With Gavin, however, Garen is always at a loss. The boy is sociable, chatty, and charming, and seems not to have inherited any of Garen's love for hunting, the woods, and solitude. Garen tends to also resent the fact that Akinita dotes on the boy so much, as Garen feels that it is no good for him to grow so dependent upon his parents. Gavin died in 42 A.U., at the war season which retook Ellish. That his son died in battle would distress Garen; worse is that Gavin went to Ellish to try and rekindle the lost Rissik luster after Torianos denobled the house. With two sons dead and a daughter in hiding, it seems that Garen and Akinita's line is all but extinguished. His daughter, Akiva, is a princess. His son married into the Royal Firgalik house. Gavin's child by his second wife, Timandra, is still a Rissik and now common.

Garen and Sabinus are very close, as they seem to have an innate understanding of one another. The two are content to sit in the woods quietly for hours, hunting prey together. He takes after his parents in terms of quiet competence, and Garen sees him as a miniature version of himself -- though he hopes for a much better life for Sabinus than he had himself. Sabinus died with Akinita, both declared traitors of the republic.

Accomplishments

  • Saving Velani before she was killed by Kenirikas when the Cockatrice assassinated Darimon. (See Velani's wiki!)
  • Rescuing the lady Eve from Kenirikas. (What is with that guy!) (See Eve's wiki)
  • Great Eagle

Garen, like his grandson Sharin, is one of the few Firans to ever receive an invitation to ride on the back of a Great Eagle. Akinita and Torvahl were also offered a ride; Akinita declined, but Torvahl accepted.

Scandals

  • Killing Kenirikas
  • The Antonian Apostasy

Despite being off with the Heroes, Garen still found himself touched by the Apostasy; his family was denobled, relations executed, and lives twisted forever. The bottom line of the Apostasy is that the royal status of the Rissik family was forever lost -- it seems utterly unclaimable to take over the Chimera clan. The power has shifted and it lies in the Elikista family.

Enemies

  • Kenirikas

This clan thinks him a villian for assassinating Kenirikas.

  • Eve

Not quite an enemy, per se, Garen found himself distrustful of Lady Eve and ketp an eye on her from a distance. Her children, Zarid's children, fell under Garen's protection; Zarid was a good friend.

Allies

One of Garen's three most-trusted people.

One of Garen's three most-trusted people.

One of Garen's three most-trusted people.

Garen and Velani share a knowlege of the past, and the divine forces that shape the world. The two are friends, and respectful, and might call upon one another for favors, but they are not close.

An ally, but Garen finds Lokaranis fairly tiresome. Still, he's there in a pinch!

Distantly, though loyal to Sabine, Garen considers her an ally. He is more loyal to her as wife of the Ranivor than anything else and knows full well that she may consider his defection into the Chimera clan a personal slight.

Murat of the Ticanee. Quiet, brooding, a hunter and archer, and above all trustworthy--worthy enough that Garen has added him to the list of three (Bannos, Elianos, and Akinita...now + Murat) people that he actually /trusts/. Murat saved Garen's life at significant risk to his own during the war season, after Garen was struck down on a scouting mission that the two were on, stripping to his loincloth to carry the unconscious Garen back to the lines and in general being a good and stalwart ally. They are close friends.
