Getting Around
From FiranMUX

Introduction
First thing we’re going to look at is your @toggles. Having color enabled on Firan will make your life easier. Lots of things are color coded – from clothes, to emits, to the map!
Map only works from outside of a building, so if you wish to follow this tutorial, make sure you are not inside a building when you follow these steps.
Type these three things(and refer to help toggles at your leisure):
@toggle ansi on
@toggle bigmap on
@toggle coordinates on
Now type map. There should be a set of RED FLASHING > < around your location. You will also see solid blue blocks with yellow # signs in them. These are city walls. They contain the city proper, and also encircle each district – which is like its own little tiny country. There are eight clans (news clans), and there are eight clan districts -- all localized around a central district – the Palace District, which is the equivalent of the Republic's district.
Reading Coordinates
At the center of the Palace District, you’ll see an M. This is the center of the grid and the center of the coordinates system -- 0.0. The coordinates system work just like a graph:
Every square to the Right(East), goes UP on the X axis (0.0; 1.0; 2.0; 3.0; etc). Every square to the Left(West), goes DOWN on the X axis (0.0; -1.0; -2.0; -3.0; etc). Every square Up(North), goes UP on the Y axis (0.0; 0.1; 0.2; 0.3; etc). Every square Down(South), goes DOWN on the Y axis (0.0; 0.-1; 0.-2; 0.-3; etc).
So, if someone asks you where 18.22 is, you can tell them it is North(22) and East(18) of the market/forum! Also, when you are walking around, or moving on the ground, the third coordinate will always be a 0. If you are flying, however, then they can go up as they represent the Z axis, or height.
With your coordinates @toggled on, each time you enter another space on the map, you’ll see the coordinates added to the room description above the Obvious Exits, offset by ## on either side. If you are already in a room and you want to check your coordinates, the @coords command will give you the coordinates of where you are. This is useful as the grid on Firan is very large, and people often use coordinates to give directions on how to get to destinations. Many of the rooms outside of the walls are named the same thing and names simply won't suffice, coordinates have to be used in that case.
Map and Map Key
Now, type map again, and then type map key. This is the map legend to make reading the map easier. You will notice every square is given some sort of designation, be it undeveloped (u), or in the middle of the river (~). Also, maps will show you the layout of the districts, though there is no detail on this map. It is simply for overall layout, quick reference.
Each of the gates of the Palace District have a number of exits. These do not bypass IC time that it would take to walk there the long way, but they have been placed there for ease of travel. So if you want to go out in the wilderness to the north of the city, for instance, you can take the Forest path (F) exit from the north gate of the Palace District, and it cuts down you walking through each of those rooms yourself.
The Old City
The Old City, while practically a clan unto itself, does not have a district per-se. It is located outside the walls, directly to the West of the Eagle District. The Sailor's Nook is considered safe, for the most part. You can come and go there without too much trouble. It is connected to the Palace District through the West gates at the Sailor's Nook (SN) exit. However, anywhere deeper into the Old City past this exit can be dangerous and easy to get lost in. They don't like outsiders, and you can be attacked simply for being there. So, explore at your own risk the areas of the Old City past the Sailor's Nook!
Finally, there's another file that gives many directions from the forum, for frequent destinations. It’s 'news directions'. This file gives directions to any of the locations listed assuming you are in the Market(at 0.0.0) when you read the file.
