A grimy canal in the Old City.
The Grand Canal was once a beautiful and well-kept site where boats would float gracefully along the water and patrons would walk along the sidewalks and bridges enjoying shopping. It is no more. Today, the Grand Canal of the
Old City is referred to as "the canals". What once served to open up the cities waterways now serves to make this slum impassible and smelly. More than a few places in the old part of town are unreachable without a raft or a boat. They are so murky, deep and dangerous that the waterways have seen more than a few bodies settle down into the mud below. If the giant rats don't kill you, the diseases that you can get out of the brown, sludgy water definitely will. It takes the bravest of gangers to be willing to swim the canals and that's on a good smell day.
