COMBAT GOALS
The combat system works as your -- the player's -- agent in handling a lot of smaller tasks so that you can focus on fun stuff like role-playing. For example, you can just tell the game 'kill Bob' and the combat system will go through a series of steps every so often, engaging your character with Bob in combat, swinging your character's weapon at Bob, and so on, till Bob is dead.
The system works by understanding what your Goal is and knowing what steps to take to accomplish that goal. You don't have to tell the game to engage Bob, then attack Bob over and over till he dies. You register your Goal through a dozen or two commands -- really just a few common ones -- and then let the game do the rest while you amaze your friends with your florid death-combat pose-writing abilities.
The Goal system works in conjunction with timers. You can change your Goal as
often as you like. When your character's timer goes off, the combat system
will look at whatever goal is set at that time and take an action for
you. It's just one action, like an engagement attempt, or a swing of your
sword. Be patient and let the timers run.
If you're ever unsure of your Goal, enter a new one! Or check @combat, which lists the goal you have selected.
These commands always declare a goal:
- kill, attack, engage, disengage, pause, stop, flee, throw at
These commands declare a goal when timers are running; otherwise, run instantly:
- wield, unwield, defend
These commands run instantly and never declare a goal:
- @combat, ammo, undefend
