STATES

Out of Combat is the typical state for someone not fighting at all, even if they're in the room with other people who are fighting.

In Combat means your timer is running, even if you aren't trying to hurt anyone and even if no one is trying to hurt you. Once you use any combat command (like kill, but not wield), you are placed into the In Combat state and perhaps moved immediately to an Engaging or Attacking state. You will be In Combat if anyone attacks you, too.

Engaging means you are trying to engage someone in combat. In this state, the game will repeatedly try to engage you until you succeed. Generally, because of the Threatening rule, it's easy to engage someone who wants to fight with you.

Engaged means you have succeeded in engaging someone but you aren't trying to attack them. An engaged opponent cannot move (without disengaging or fleeing).

Attacking means you are trying to hurt someone you have already engaged.

COMMANDS

"Kill" or "attack" both will attempt to move you into the Attacking state, moving you first into Engaging until successful. The commands will cause you to attack until your opponent is unaware (dead, unconscious, asleep) or not present (OOC, disconnected, or not in the room for some reason). If you used "kill," then the game will continue with a "slay" command once they are dead or unconscious, then stop. Generally, once the game doesn't have someone for you to attack, it will change you to the In Combat state.

"Pause" is only useful when you are already engaged with and attacking an opponent. It causes you to move to the Engaged (not EngagING) state, which means you stay engaged with them but stop trying to hurt them. A "kill" or "attack" command move you back to Attacking.

"Disengage" causes you to attempt to become disengaged from an opponent. You stop attacking. It will roll dice if an opponent threatens you. If no one threatens you, you get free disengagement. Once you are disengaged, you are kept in the In Combat state (timers are still running). If you are Engaging but not engaged yet, the command will still move you to the In Combat state.

"Flee" causes you to try to get Out of Combat. You stop attacking, start trying to disengage you and get you out of the room. You get a small advantage to your disengage attempts but won't be allowed back in the room for a while.

"Stop fighting" only works if you are not threatened by anyone. You stop attacking, disengage (freely), and change to the Out of Combat state. You don't flee the room.
