ENGAGEMENT (COMBAT)
Engagement in the new system has been very much simplified with three rules:
1. If two people want to fight each other in melee combat, they get free
- engagement on each other (no dice are rolled).
2. If two people DON'T want to fight each other in melee combat, they get free
- disengagement on each other (no dice are rolled).
3. Engagement is reciprocal. It doesn't matter who is the engager or engagee.
- You both have equal chances to hit each other once you're engaged.
Rules 1 and 2 are handled through a new concept called "threats." People get free engagement with anyone who threatens them and free disengagement from anyone who does not threaten them.
If you TRY to engage someone (even if you fail), you threaten them. You stop threatening someone once you have disengaged from them, once you start attacking someone else, or if you are no longer able to fight (OOC, dead, unconscious, asleep, disconnected, etc.).
It is GOOD to be threatened, generally speaking. This means that you get to engage someone freely if you want. Otherwise, a threat does not harm you. Only engagement can harm you.
In general, the 'engage' and 'disengage' commands aren't very useful. The main combat commands like 'kill' handle engagement for you, but they're there in case you want to engage a second or third opponent (perhaps to switch opponents), or to get out of a fight without fleeing the room.
