Hunting
Hunting is an activity that can be done for many reasons. It provides a source of meat, poultry, sinew, fat, feathers and bones and has an important place in several Ticanee traditions and rituals. It also provides entertainment for those who enjoy combat.
At least one person in a hunting party must have the hunting/trapping skill; you cannot find animals without it. It is also important that you either have permission to hunt on the land you are currently occupying or that you use the public hunting grounds provided by the Republic. Should you hunt in a location where you do not have permission you could be charged for poaching.
Hunting Code
They can be found using the coordinates system and are at the coordinates 25.-17.0, 25.-18.0 and 24.-16.
You can also reach the public hunting grounds by going through the city dump shortcut (CDA) at the Chimera gates and then heading south.
Alternatively, if you start at the forum (coordinate 0.0), the following set of directions will get you there.. east. east. east. east. cda. south. south. south. To hunt, you will need a suitable location, someone with the hunting/trapping skill and someone with adequate combat skills. Recommended supplies include food, armor and weapons.
When the group is ready the individual with the hunting skill types find <animal>. When the find <animal> command is used the system determines what you find, if anything. It is worth nothing that a spectacular success can find groups of animals. When a group of animals attacks it does considerably more damage. When a hunt check has been successfully performed the animal joins the room and automatically attempts to attack one person. When a found animal attacks it can attack anyone in the same room. The code doesn't care if that person is armored, part of the hunt or even hiding. Thus it's often useful to have those who are non-combatants leave the room before the command is run. When using the find command it is possible to be specific or general. If you use find bear animals then the code will try and find a bear and will not bring up any other creatures but if you use find animal you will get anything from the creatures list (shown below) including the birds. You can also use find bird to find any bird.
Once the animal has been found it must be killed using the same combat system used against other players. When the animal is unconscious you can slaughter <animal> to finish it off. If you have a knife, once the animal is dead you may use the butcher <corpse> command to turn it into meat, poultry and other animal products. When an animal is successfully butchered any javelins and thrown weapons will be dropped in the room. It is possible to make any animal go away by typing shoo <animal>.
Sometimes it is possible to tame an animal found using the hunting skill.
The trapping system allows you to set traps in a room and return a day or more later. This results in the creature being unconscious following removal from the trap making hunting a much safer and quicker task. Unfortunately the trapping system is currently inactive.
It is normally impossible to see how wounded an animal is beyond watching the damage emits. However if you have the farrier skill it is possible to diagnose <animal>. Diagnosing costs energy but it will provide an overview of the animals injuries.
Prey Animals
The animals that may be found depend upon the type of land in which you are hunting, what animals have been coded into the game and the quantity remaining. You can see the habitat type of a specific area in this grid map.
A list of the different creatures that can be found within the world are provided in the lists below. You can survey a room to discover what sorts of resources can be found there. Surveying a plot without permission is considered an IC action that can have serious legal consequences for your character.
