Hydran Newsletter
The Hydrans take this opportunity to tell everyone they meet that this is a prime example of how unreliable the Republic is--that this is why they have had to withdraw so often, due to incompetence and no care. Did the Republic care about the Eagles at all, or did it slaughter them in the forum like so much cattle? Hydrans blatantly disbelieve that this was an accident, and point to the many historical incidents of the Gold Dragons deliberately butchering people. "Rivaren was laughing before he had his leg chomped," they say.
For the Bear Clan, the Market Massacre of 33 A.U. conforms with their worst nightmares about what happens when decorum and uncivilized behavior is let to have its day. The Bear Clan vividly remembers their "I'm with Stupid" jests when they paired with the Gold Dragons for the Cockatrice Liberation. They are now convinced, more than ever, that had they not been there, the entire Realms would be in flames. Bears find the state of affairs intolerable, and a sad testament to the power of Drik. Like the Hydrans, they hold no faith that Anikos's Folly was not pre-meditated murder by impatient blood-hungry Dragon Commanders, and like the Cockatrice, the Bears resolve to be more involved in Republic military matters. (If your character is between the ages of 14-35 you will have to submit compelling reasons to the Player Helpers why you are not enlisting.)
Under ordinary circumstances, the execution of children for no crime other than who their parents are might earn the ire of at least a liberal third of the population, but in the aftermath of the Market Massacre and Zeysani's murder, with the populace whipped up against haffies, the most common comment is, "At least Ania is a leader who means what she says and says what she means. She'll keep us safe." And others who say, "It's the price of war. We're at war with the Shamibelians and what about all the Firan children that Shamibelians kill? Why don't you whiners ever talk about that?!" Thus, for the time being, the populace is content, and indeed, Ania's popularity rises with the executions of the four little children of Druagik.
The shoppers don't crowd the marketplace, which is strewn with dead bodies and birds and blood. In fact, merchants aren't even selling there, because of the destruction and the loss of life.
The city is still in a state of shock and mourning over the loss of civilian life in the Forum. Dragons are a bit defensive when they run into their fellow citizens, saying that it was just an accident--that of course, neither Rivaren nor Anikos, would have intended wholesale slaughter of people in the forum, but the reputation for bloodthirstyness is taking its toll on Dragons, and for once, they are not proud.
Hydrans are quick to point out that Petulos the Pitiless left their clan, is a Chimeran, and in no way represented the Hydrans in further murders and mayhem against the Eagle Clan. They have stayed out of the Forum, however, for fear of what they might see there and retribution that might be had against them.
The Griffon Clan's sadness is mixed with anger. Two of their best soldiers, Asapaia and Kinnit were killed in the Market Massacre, and they know that Dragon commanders were to blame. Given the history of the clans, the potential for bitter explosiveness is growing and could threaten the upcoming nuptials between Lady Luna and her long-time betrothed, Lord Judanus.
Bear Clan members continue to enlist in record numbers, and most look to a statement from their Lady Proxy on how best to memorialize the Bear Clan Guard, Mes Heremia, who died defending innocent civilians from Republic Aggression.
So fervent is the Bear Clan determination to join the military and counter-act "Stupid" by whom, the entire Republic knows who they mean, the Ista Aldrik girls have even enlisted. Some people in the Republic snort, "Oh dear, I can see it on the battlefield now. Help! Medic! I've broken a nail!" But these acts of patriotism still resonate.
It might be noticed that all of the merchant stands within the forum are left empty. Merchants refuse to sell their wares in light of the damage done with the recent massacre, at least until the mess and carnage is cleaned up and their stalls are once more repaired. They want to know who will foot the bill for the damage done, and there are some who are eyeing the Gold Dragon Clan.
SPEECHES:
Donos : Children of the Halfie
Let it be known that 500,000 stenis shall be given to the first person to bring information to me regarding the location of each of the Haffie's children. If the information is in the form of their heads, so be it; but the reward shall be cut by the percentage of body that is missing from the child.
Taleo : Dark Times
"Firans, I have seen the forum and I am literally sickened by the loss of life. I hear your crying. I hear the hatred building. I hear the Hydrans telling the Republic "I told you so" and the Eagles wanting more blood. The Griffons have suffered a loss, the Bears too, and the Gold Dragons are taking pause to reflect in their mourning. This kind of pain is the work of the dark one. You know who I speak of. I understand this pain, the emotional blackness that takes us over, when the need to get blood and vengeance is heavy on our souls. When I was held a Shamibelian slave in my youth, I witnessed the work of the dark one many times, and it is devastating to see it here in the very center of our city. The Market Massacre ought never have happened. I would never have imagined that someone like Sir Anikos, who was such a hero to the Republic in the last Air Raid, could have shown such poor judgment. Lord Primo is investigating why a celebrated commander would issue those orders, why our pilots were not trained better, and why Lord Rivaren allowed it to happen on his watch. But all that said, I must take full responsibility for this dark day in Republic history. I will offer my resignation to the Clan Council at our next meeting. But should they express continued faith in me and retain me as Viceroy, I swear to this Republic that a first division will be born. A memorial will be built in honor of the victims of this terrible tragedy, and we will never forget how their lives were lost. We will rebuild, not from a place of hate, but from a place of love and pride for what we have built. Let our Republic and continued unity, even after such terrible accidents, be a mote in the eye of Drik.
Jalil: Market Massacre
The last message I received from Clan Leader Zeysani just before she went off to war was a request that I come to her clan's aid in the spirit of the alliance that we share. And in the spirit of that alliance, I did try to come to her aid. I failed, in every sense. Over the last few weeks, I have thought about what happened a thousand times over. Could I have said or done something differently to save my friend's life? But it is in the past and I cannot bring her back. All I can do now is grieve for her. Which makes what happened in the Forum all the more tragic. I know that she wanted the Republic to thrive and flourish. I believe that this is a vision shared by all who hold a medallion, but by her especially. What happened was a tragedy, to be sure. But she would not have wanted this to be the legacy of her death. We must tend to our wounds, and move forward as best we can, as she would have wanted us to. I have spoken to several of those who were involved in or witnessed what happened. I know that the Republic is even now reviewing why an air force officer was placed in command of such a situation in the Palace District, when he was clearly not trained to do so, and that such mistakes will not be made in the future. For Sir Anikos' part in this, he was not guilty of malice, but of extremely poor judgment. And he has paid with his life, but I find that this is not enough. In death, I strip Anikos of his Sharanir title. The land he received with that title will go to the Eagle clan to do with as they see fit. Further, the Gold Dragon clan understands that the needs of the families involved are great, as are the needs of those whose livelihood has been threatened. The clan will contribute one hundred million stenis to this cause, to be placed into an account controlled by the Republic. This money will go towards aiding those who have lost loved ones, to helping those who survived, and to rebuild what was broken. Furthermore, the Gold Dragon clan will extend its mourning period for six months from today. We will survive this. The Republic will survive. Let us honor Clan Leader Zeysani's memory as she would have wanted, by building something better; a unity of purpose, of common goals, and of our hopes and dreams.
Donos: Hydran Peace?
Eagles, while I have received several messengers from the Hydran Clan making subtle suggestions towards a mutual peace, I wish you all to know that I have returned none of them. I have stood in silence while speech after speech has been made attempting to lay blame on Her Honor Zeysani. I have held my tongue as the messengers of peace attempt to lay all fault on the Eagles for what was obviously a failure of leadership within the Hydran Clan. Until we are given some acknowledgment from the clan, we remain at odds with their people. However, we will neither take part in, nor take advantage of the Republic control of the Hydrans. If we are to clash, let it never be said that we fight an unarmed foe... nor break a temporary truce. As to what will come when the serpent is fanged once more, that is for another day.
HYDRAN OOC NOTES:
The Olympic events aren't scheduled yet, but they should be held the first week of April according to the latest post. I'll post later about tryouts once I verify something, and plan to contact people individually (both ICly and OOCly) about events they might compete in. However, we seriously do need pretty much every adult male Hydran to participate, given our small numbers. We also need women and children to come cheer on competitors, sing songs, help with uniforms, cook food, etc. Our goals are threefold: a) to have fun; b) to win some medals; and, c) to compete in all events, if possible. The first part really is important because, realistically speaking, we're not going to pull off an Olympic win this year. But we CAN have fun, and I'm sure some of us can win medals. For reference, last year we were in last place, but only a few points behind the Cockatrice. P.S. If anyone knows about the existence (or not) of Hydran Olympic team uniforms, let me know, before I task the women's sewing circle to make new ones.
Alright. I'm somewhat hesitant to go into the Palace District for tryouts, what with all the talk of Eagles finding Hydrans to kill, so I figure we can do tryouts here in our district and just use simple @checks. I'm not sure people's schedules so I just put something up for Monday night at 8 pm EST. This will be after Aldrikos' regent meeting, and hopefully time to grab some dinner afterwards. Those who can't make it then and really want to RP tryouts, mail me your availability and I'll set up another time. Or I can meet one-on-one. And I plan to start pestering people about Things They're Good At starting soon. (Both of these are from Kalchus. Sign up with him today!!)
