Overview
This large and quarrelsome noble family is considered to be one of the most respectable noble families in Anarinuell. They are rumored to be dysfunctional, but only in such a way as would greatly amuse the Firan populace at large. They have produced some notable heroes and been the source of some notorious scandals throughout Republic history.
They are also one of the wealthiest noble families in Anarinuell. Iberik holdings include the Diplomat Inn and the Feathered Nest in the Palace District and they own significant amounts of land around the city. As well, the current Lord Mayor of Caldera City is an Iberik.
Head of Household
Lord Marsalos Iberik: Captain of the Raven Wing of the Coalition Air Force, High Priest of the Temple of Zin, Senator of the Cockatrice Clan, Lord of the Games, and general jack-of-all-trades.
Colors and Heraldry
Colors: black/purple (Purple not visible on the arms to the right. The Iberik Raven has purple-edged wings, no longer magenta as they once were when the family was of the Eagle Clan.
Current Events
In 49 A.U., Lord Marsalos was appointed Senator in the Cockatrice Clan, after being somewhat instrumental in the drawing up of the new constitution. He has also become somewhat notorious for his formation of the Raven Wing of the Air Force, whose outfits can be seen on many pilots around the city.
During the Kinslayer Wars in 48 A.U., the democratic uprising in the Eagle clan took full hold, effectively deposing the existing system and reducing its nobility to the rank of commoners. Despite having remained in the Clan up until that point through thick and thin, acting head of household Lord Aran Iberik made the fateful decision to have the Iberik family switch its allegiance to the Cockatrice clan under the auspices of an agreement between the elected Eagle Clan Leader Ania and Cockatrice Clan Proxy Banian.
In 45-46 A.U., during the democracy uprisings in the Eagle Clan, the Iberiks found themselves somewhat untouched. That is, until 46 A.U., when the Iberik mansion was burned and looted. Lord Aran, then Head of Household, made a speech in the face of riots decrying the effect that democracy was having on the Eagle Clan. Soon thereafter, the Iberik mansion was looted and burned.
Historical Background
Originally run by Yaffros Iberik, the real power in the family used to be Yaffros' grandfather, Lord Jaran Iberik, the cranky old man who was too old to run the family affairs on his own, but too stubborn to let go of the reins. Yaffros was a dashing young man who is said to harbor dreams of being a musician but is too busy being responsible for anything like that. One of former Clan Leader Nydiam's decrees in early 21 A.U was to denounce Yaffros as head, and appoint Jaran.
In late 23 A.U., the Iberik family lost two members in quick succession. Arius died seemingly trying to stop a fire in the Griffon district, but the circumstances of why he was in the fire in the first place are still unclear. And Yasha received the marriage prize at aspring festial and picked the Chimeran proxy and heir Sabinus, as her husband, becoming a Rissik and a Chimera in the process.
After Lord Jaran had been too ill to lead the family for a few years, with Lady High Priestess Nalia at the reins for what was thought to be a temporary measure, it was made formal in 25 A.U. when the Eagle Clan Leader Zeysani formally named Lady Nalia as new head of house, a position given to Lord Proxy Yaffros when Lady Nalia was named Regent for the Griffon Clan.
The family went through many trials and tribulations in the years following Yaffros' appointment. Scandals rocked the family seemingly one after the other--Yasha, Eneas, Talion, Trachi, the demise of Anzo and Jaran, and recently Nivik. But through it all the Iberiks have always seemed to rise above things to resurge again, like a phoenix from the ashes.
Family Members
Aside from Lord Marsalos, notable living family members in Anarinuell include his wife, Lady Ildria Iberik (nee' Didoron); Lord Aran, relatively recently arrived from Caldera City and grandson to Lord Mayor Diomedes; Lord Nessik Iberik (formerly Didoron) who married in to Lady Savanna Iberik; Lady Kassia (nee' N'Gato), widow of Nivik (d); Marsalos' father and mother Lord Yaffros and Lady Deelia; and Lord Zakariah Iberik, who lives with his father Inarus amongst the Elikistas. Lady Nalia Iberik, former High Priestess of Unot, has left the city for Caldera City.
Notable deceased family members include Yaffros' parents, Lady Loria Iberik (d) and Lord Anzo Iberik (d) who were not known for their business savvy; their daughter, the executed Yasha Rissik.
Several years ago, a young man named Trachi showed up on Jaran's doorstep and insisted he is a distant cousin of the Iberik family. The old man was suspicious of that claim, especially since Trachi has a somewhat dubious reputation, but he made up for this in when he was captured by the Shamibelians when he tried to free a group that had been kidnapped. He returned in time for the Spring Festival of 26 A.U., now known as a hero.
While the Iberik family has changed and morphed with the times, the last decade has been relatively turbulent given the situation with Lasanna Mondarik/Tanelish. In the past, the children of Lady Lasanna, Lord Trachi's wife. Lord Mahir, formerly of the First Division, wed Lady Zenia Dawn, bringing her into the family, and Lady Zinia was similarly wed to Lord Ettore Sennet. Lord Talion, one of the children of Lady Nalia, was wed to Lady Kassia N'Gato, making her an Iberik. After Lord Talion's death at the front in the war season of 42 AU, Lady Kassia remained in the family by marriage to Lord Nivik Iberik, member of the First Division and Lord Mayor Diomedes' grandson.
There has been a fair amount of outward flux of Iberiks as well. The deaths of Lords Talion, Arius, and Tyrontino, partnered with several Iberiks marrying out of the family, have seemingly ended Lady Nalia's line . Lord Tarnot was wed to Lady Selia Istabelik of the Hydras, Lord Tiernan to Lady Nyla Teranzik of the Bears, and most recently Lady Teriana to Lord Rusul Didoron of the Cockatrice Clan. Though they are continuing the bloodline, it is not as Iberiks. Additionally, Lord Zeynus, a child of Lady Lasanna's marriage to the later Lord Pavan N'Gato has been married out of the family to Lady Imoen Sennet.
Scandals
Yaffros' brother Sedrik was disowned by the family in a scandal, thrown out of the Eagle clan and made to live in the Old City as a Gold Dragon. He was killed in early February of 20 A.U.
Lady Fida Iberik, missing since the Exodus, miraculously returned to Anarinuell with a small group of escaped slaves late in 26 A.U. In the spring of 27 A.U., she made a speech from the forum announcing herself to be a Priestess of the Dark Lord's Temple. This caused quite an outrage, of course, and a mob was quickly formed around her. All that is known for sure is that she died, whether by mortal hands or divine ones will likely always be debated.
In late 29 A.U., scandal found itself on the Iberik doorstep again. Lord Eneas was convicted of various crimes and executed by hanging. Having been stripped of nobility and family name prior to his death, he was not truly an Iberik in name when his pyre was lit.
Another member of the Iberik family who seemed unable to escape scandal was Lady Yasha. Sister to Lord Marsalos, she went through a number of marriages, first to Lord Leonus Teranzik,only to be divorced. Next she used a marriage prize to wed Lord Sabinus Rissik, who was executed in 25 AU. Another marriage prize was used to wed Prince Sadin Elianik, who would publicly divorce her going to Scirlut in 36 AU. Finally, after being implicated with the Antonian Apostasy, she was executed for treason in 37 AU.
Lord Talion Iberik, son of Lord Tergus and Lady Nalia, rose to become the Iberik Head of Household, only to watch his power crumble in a quick succession of scandals. The Unotian insulted a number of noble and royal houses, and was publicly shamed in a judgment by Clan Leader Ania. Before he could fully redeem his reputation, he died on the way to Ellish in 42 AU.
In 43 AU, news returned from the front that Lord Trachi had been killed in the line of duty at Ellish, but not before professing that he was a member of the Old City that had robbed Yaffros of some fifty million stenis of the Republic's coffers, and used the money to pose as a noble and distant cousin of Yaffros'. This stirred up a fair amount of controversy, though the status of "Lord" Trachi's family is still in question.
Lord Anzo died in 44 AU, and his will proved to be a very high profile matter, as it turned out to be a treasure hunt! Some people clucked their tongues at this as being in poor taste, but it certainly captured the city's attention for a little while.
46 AU would prove to be the unraveling of Lord Nivik Iberik. As one of the few old-blooded Iberiks remaining in the family, eyes turned to him when the Democratic movement turned violent. After his wife, Lady Kassia, was abducted by some radical Democrats, Nivik made a number of speeches against them, which many blame as the reason that they took her eye. His attitude extended to the Clan Leader as well, which quickly found him in hot water, facing charges of insubordination. Before he could come to trial, he died in Ellish that same year.
