Junking

@junk (help @junk) is an OOC command which can be used to dispose of items and help keep the garbage count down. However, being an OOC command, it should only be used in certain circumstances. First of all, you should never use this to get rid of an item for any reason except that it is yours, no longer needed, and there is no other way to get rid of it. If you obtained an item illegally, or wish to get rid of something incriminating (or something that is someone else's), for example, you need to use an IC method of disposal.

Secondly, you should use an IC method of disposal if one exists. Various alternative methods (these should be used in lieu of @junking) are:

  • recycle (help recycle), good for: keys, jewelry, clothes, furniture, and other items
  • shred (help shred), good for: scrolls
  • burn (help light fire), good for: many things, including food, ingredients, some clothing, drawings, paintings, some furniture, wood, ropes, sinews, etc.
  • smash (help smash), good for: glass and pottery products
  • spill (help spill), good for: liquids
  • shoo (help shoo), good for: animals, plants, resources of that nature

If you are unable to use any of the above methods to get rid of an item, it belongs to you, and you aren't trying to get rid of something incriminating, feel free to use @junk. From there, it will go to the Garbage Heap, where it will be looked over by player helpers before either being zapped or sent up to Wizards for review. It is important to NEVER use @junk to get rid of something so you can ICly deny having it. For example, if you are in a battle and have a scroll listing off troop numbers and deployments, you may shred or burn the scroll if you are able; you may NOT @junk it.

It is also very important to make sure that whatever you are junking is empty. If you have a basket to @junk, it is important to make sure that it is empty first. Otherwise, everything within the basket will also go to the garbage heap, and will likely be zapped.

There are two notable exceptions. Tents, due to their code (they are a portable room, in a way), should be @junked rather than disposed of in any other manner. You may also @junk clothes which are still good, and they will be sent to wardrobes for level IV chargens.

Thank you for trying to keep the garbage count down!
