Overview
Kamnester stands tall and walks confidently, fists typically clenched at his sides. He has bright red hair that is usually tousled, and unless tied back, tends to fall in his eyes. He has chubby cheeks that bunch up under his eyes and around his lips, making it look like he's squinting all the time.
Kamnester is an angry man. He's a redhead, and he's got the red hot temper to match. He's a bit of a bully by nature, always picking on smaller or weaker guys, but he isn't a bully out of any genuine malice. He views it as more of a defense--if he doesn't do it, then someone else will bully him. The only way he knows to get his way or even get attention is simply to be louder and stronger than everyone else. Kamnester certainly likes the ladies and will drop the bully act around them, opting for roguish charm instead. He never wants to fall in love though and doesn't really like kids -- babies have killed the people important to him.
Early History
Kamnester was an orphan, but was adopted into the Marcus family by Antonius and his wife, Inea. But Kamnester was only three years only when Inea died giving birth to his brother, Antonik. But he grew up spending a lot of time not only around his brothers, but his cousins in the Karik and Mink families as well. Antonius was his ultimate hero, and he aspired to be exactly like him. He joined the Republic military, learned how to fight with an axe, and generally worked to be a man that Antonius would be proud of.
Recent History
In time, the role of Head of Household would pass from Antonius to Antonik, and this infuriated Kamnester, as Antonik is of course responsible for Inea's death. And so he suffered through his brother's insufferably bossy, know-it-all management of the Marcuses, including forcing Kamnester to marry Tivana. He never wanted to be married in the first place, so to be married to Tivana of all people was pretty horrible. Nonetheless, she bore two children in the span of their marriage, and he tried not to be too mean to her.
But there were much bigger problems in his home life. Kamnester's worship of his father would prove to be a nearly fatal misplacement of trust. As it turned out, Antonius was secretly the ringleader of a conspirancy against Lord Viceroy Taleo and the Royal Family, which once uncovered and quashed would come to be known as the Antonian Apostasy. The entire Marcus family was arrested and sentenced to death, but were granted quarter and spared their lives, except for Antonius, who was executed for his involvement. The Republic claimed the Marcus estate, took all their possessions, and erased the Marcus family name for good.
Kamnester struggled to find his feet after being given his life and freedom back. Without a home or a family to turn to, Kamnester would rely on the few stenis he had to get himself an apartment, since sleeping outside wasn't working so well for him. Much to his surprise, he found that the apartment he had rented had a strange mute girl and her pet goat living in it. Rather than draw attention to himself right after escaping prison, Kamnester decided to try to make it work. But in a loud incident where he discovered that the young mes, Triane, was not in fact mute, the situation was broken up by another tenant of the apartment building, Ziya. Insistent that he not stay with Triane, as it was improper, she instead forced him to sleep on her couch.
It was some months before the tenuous friendship between Ziya and Kamnester blossomed into... well, the inevitable. Kamnester's insistence that he'd never fall in love of course slowed down matters, but it may also be what saved their relationship. After living together for around a year, they finally went ahead and made things official by remarrying, as Tivana had divorced him after being granted quarter, and Ziya had divorced from her last spouse, Faris. Since then, they've had a shockingly faithful and happy marriage.
There's been one lingering problem, however, and that was the matter of Kamnester's military career. He was initially desperate to get his old life as a soldier back, but when he finally got it, it had lost its luster. Without the untarnished image of his father to guide him, he found the military structure oppressive, limiting, and unfair. The fact that Ziya didn't like him being a Guard didn't help, either. He was transferred to the Second Division, and while in the midst of preparing for the War Season, his enlistment unexpectedly was up. After a decade of service, he quit the military, and started looking for a new career.
These days, Kamnester is a mason, and hoping to even flex his creativity by being an architect. He's looking for that project that will make his name known, and redeem his spoiled reputation.
Ranks & Offices
Unsurprisingly, none. Being an ex-Marcus is bad for one's political career.
Family Life
Parents
Kamnester didn't get to see his adoptive father very much, but he idolized the man. He was a guard and wore real armor and wielded real weapons and he was just everything Kamnester could hope to be. But when the apostasy was revealed and Kamnester was sentenced to death for his father's crimes before being granted quarter, he started to rethink the whole thing. Antonius isn't just a traitor. He abandoned Kamnester, and death was too good for that lout for nearly getting Kamnester killed.
Inea died when Kamnester was very young, but he still loves his adoptive mother, and blames Antonik for her death, as she died during his birth. All of Kamnester's problems with women, children, and relationships stem from this formative event.
Siblings
Antonik is Kamnester's least favorite brother. Which assumes he even likes Antonik in the first place. Inea died, and it's Antonik's fault. And he doesn't even feel bad about it. He is always running around, smiling and happy, and he murdered the only woman Kamnester could ever love. And as Head of House, Antonik was always bossing him around, telling him what he could and couldn't do. He even arranged Kamnester a marriage and forced him to go through with it! Antonik put him through marriage to Tivana and two children. Jerk.
Brennus was another child that Inea adopted from the orphanage. He was a few years younger, but also a dedicated soldier. A dedicated soldier, maybe, but perhaps not a good one. He died in his first battle in the War Season of 37 AU.
Judas is the middle of Kamnester's younger siblings. Like Brennus was, he's also the adventurous type, but he wanted to be an athlete of all things. How dumb is that? It seems like he wizened up and joined the military, but that was around the same time that Kamnester was getting out of the military. So, Judas is either behind the curve, or just not that bright. Kamnester hasn't decided yet.
Marriage
Naive. Gullable. Innocent. She was pressed into marriage with Kamnester because a Prince had eyes for her and put her into a delicate situation. Kamnester despised the idea and made a fuss about it, but he eventually went through with it. He knew that Tivana never loved him, and she knew that he never loved her, and that made it easier. He tried to be nice and to not bully her around too much. He didn't have to, after all. She's very obedient to his wishes and even point-blank told him that she didn't care if he dallied with other women as long as he was discreet about it. She wasn't a terrible wife. She eventually moved to get away from the Antonik. Maybe she's not so dumb after all. They were divorced after the apostasy, and Kamnester thought he'd never have to see her again, but they ran into each other at the Olympic Trials in 42 AU. And she was nice to him! It's probably good that she doesn't hold the whole apostasy thing against him.
The central enigma in Kamnester's life, and consequentially the center of his life after the apostasy. Despite promising himself that he'd never fall in love, Ziya somehow got the best of him. Maybe it was because he was forward with her. Maybe it's because she was the one who suggested that they get married. Maybe it's the fact that she's the sole reason he's not unemployed and possibly dead. He owes her a lot, and it's translated into fierce devotion and affection. He was afraid to admit he loved her, but once it slipped out, it was out, and he's since decided that she must have mentioned it to somebody by now, and therefore doesn't need to keep it a secret. He loves his wife, and will cause bodily harm to anyone that would threaten their marriage in any way. She's kind of fickle, and Kamnester's issues with abandonment make it hard for him to trust that she's not going to leave him, but she's told him that she wants to stay with him, and now they're actually having a child together. He figures that this must be the real deal, if he'd willingly give her a child, and she'd willingly carry his child. He'd sacrifice anything and everything to make the marriage last.
Children
- Aulus
Tivana's first child. Given the circumstances of their marriage, it's not hard to figure out that Kamenster had nothing to do with this baby, and he acts accordingly. Since the divorce, he hasn't seen Aulus at all, but kids aren't his thing, so he doesn't really mind not seeing "his" son.
- Zosime
The other child, and first daughter, born while he was married to Tivana. Kamnester was even more distant about dealing with Zosime than he was about dealing with Aulus, maybe because she's a girl and therefore Kamnester didn't have to stop Tivana from dressing her up in pink like he did Aulus. Like Aulus, Kamnester hasn't seen Zosime since the divorce.
- ?
Ziya is expecting their first child. Whether or not Kamnester and Ziya fail as loving parents remains to be seen.
Accomplishments & Successes
- Axes
Kamnester fancies himself to be a pretty skilled fighter with an axe. One of the best in the city, even. Of course, there aren't that many in the city, but that just gives him all the more reason to practice hard and get better. He likes to use the axe as a symbol for himself, perhaps in a final, defiant connection to Antonius. Or maybe it's just that old habits die hard.
- Surviving
Kamnester's now three years past the apostasy, and maybe happier than he ever was before the apostasy. Starting over has been a huge challenge for him, but as he keeps struggling on, it looks like he'll be around for a while longer yet.
- Ziya
If you hurt Ziya, Kamnester will do everything in his power to make your life uncomfortable. Count on it.
Scandals & Failures
- Being a Marcus
His hero is one of the most infamous traitors in the city's history. Modeling yourself after the Lanesh Regime's trial of Firgalas is not something to aspire to. The city has been slow to forget his connection to Antonius, and tend to give him a lot of guff about it.
