Overview
Every year, during FiranCon, Adam and Stephanie host Live Action Role-Play (LARP). This requires no great acting skills on your part, and it really helps to break the ice. Everyone is given a packet of materials that will help them get "in character" and an outline of the plot. It's a lot like an improvisational play and much laughter and hilarity ensues. This year, we will continue the tradition--likely using a group of rooms on our hotel floor. Be prepared for begging, wheedling and cajoling to use your room for the LARP if you happen to be near the con suite.
Setting
In previous years we've played out murder mysteries, wars, plagues, weddings, funerals, elections, pentathlons, festivals, masquerade balls and ferry cruises. This year, we'll be doing something a little different. We'll be playing in Occupied Anarinuell, five years into the future. You may assume for purposes of the LARP that the Shamibelians have somehow invaded the Firan lands and captured the city. This means we will welcome volunteers to play Shamibelians in the LARP. If you want to play your own characters, or your children, be sure to add five years onto their age in making your decision.
Costume Suggestions
Due to the nature of this larp, costuming might be a little different than usual.
If you're playing a Shamibelian male, you may wish to acquire some horns and dark orange-ish make-up for your skin.
If you're playing a Shamibelian female, you may wish to acquire something akin to a burka.
If you're playing a male slave, just wear a tunic, because you don't have the dignity to wear a toga in Occupied Anarinuell.
If you're playing a female slave, just wear a stola, because you don't have the dignity to wear a palla in Occupied Anarinuell.
Materials
As you might guess, an enormous amount of work goes into the creation of the LARP. Steph and Adam (ok, mostly Steph) write approximately 80k words every year, which translates into three to four hours of fun. It's a lot of writing, and it has to be broken down into parts. Here is a basic list of materials that have to be written for each player:
- Rules
- Scenario Sheet
- Character Sheet
- Props/Letters/Scrolls/Evidence
- Action Cards
Preparation
Additionally, writing a story that encompasses at least fifty characters in a giant plotline, along with smaller, personal plotlines, requires an enormous amount of logistical coordination. While in the early plotting phase, Steph visually draws out 7-8 tables or rooms at which players start. Then she usually keeps a massive document in which she writes out at least 5-10 clues or plot points for each character, and then cross-references them. She'll also write a master timeline. Though the character sheets end up being the most visible end-product of the work, the bulk of preparation is done before a character sheet is ever written. It's at this stage of the game that we will generally ask for players to help us edit character sheets and produce documents and other props.
Progress-So-Far
