History
The year 44 A.U. was shaping up to be a good one by Firan standards. Prince Zaridos Elianik, General of the "Predator" Division, scored a number of spectacular military victories against the Shamibelians. Meanwhile, Prince Savaren Elianik's division performed poorly. Though the exact details are much disputed, his soldiers frequently arrived late to the action, and missed out on the glory. Zaridos set up a plan, in which he intended to draw the Shamibelians towards Firalut, and crush their army forever. But it turned out that it was the Shamibelians who were laying the trap. When the confrontation came, they rolled over Zaridos' army, made short work of Savaren's reinforcements, and were not even stopped by the First Division led by Princes Lucas and Rislan in the capitol city.
Clan Leader Ania managed to escape. Clan Leader Ojitar was visiting the Caldera City at the time, and was unharmed. They now rule what remains of the Free Firan cities up north.
Unfortunately, many members of the royal family were captured, along with a great many clan leaders. Viceroy Taleo Teranzik was forced to surrender in exchange for the lives of the Elianik family. He and his wife Taria were sacrificed to Obala during the Shamibelian victory celebration.
Setting
It's the year 45 A.U. and the city is Occupied Anarinuell. But the capitol city of the Firan Realms is no longer under Republic control. Every Firan city south of the Ani River has fallen under the chariot wheels of the horned invaders. And the once proud capitol city, with all its defensive walls, is part of the theocratic Shamibelian Empire.
The old Eagle clan boundaries now mark the southern-most border of what remains of the Firan Republic. There is still some resistance at those borders, or so the rumors go, but the Firan populace has been crippled by war and disease. Nobody thinks that the remaining free Firans will be able to hold out very long in the north. And they certainly have no power to help their enslaved brethren trapped behind the city walls of Anarinuell.
Of course, Shamibelians don't use land or structure cities the same way that the Firans did. They fight over, seize and clear lands. And if they find a useful building somewhere, they use it. Temples have been turned into prisons. Public buildings have been turned into mansions. Mansions have been turned into stables.
The streets are no longer public at all, but owned by Shamibelian Vitaras who will have you killed if they catch you trespassing without a permit.
People
The City of Occupied Anarinuell is ruled by General Hralib Vettle, Governor, Slave Master, Lion of Ellish, Son of Pethel, Holder of Pevifa Tibenya and Nobifa Vettle.
He works in a loose partnership with the High Priest of Obala, Tatomir Vettle who holds unspeakable evil powers in his bare hands and has been known to suck the life out of his enemies.
Governor Hralib's favored son has recently disappeared, and foul play has been suspected. Thus, his only remaining son, Hashi, stands to inherit all his slaves. That is, unless they're executed tonight.
Scenario
Governor Hralib helped kick off a grisly Shamibelian celebration last evening called "The Night of Obala's Pride." During the festivities, Clan Leader Fidelia was marched out before onlookers. Her throat was slit, and her blood drained into a boiling cauldron before her corpse was thrown on the body rot pile outside the Palace, which has been made into a catacombs.
Fidelia was supposed to be the only one who died last night, but Governor Hralib was found murdered this morning. Some wonder if there is a serial killer on the loose, because another body, this time a Firan slave-girl named Throgana, was found dead in the slave temple this afternoon.
By Shamibelian law, if a Master is murdered, all his slaves are presumed guilty. With no hint of who might have murdered Hralib, it has been decreed that unless the real killer is found, all of Hralib's slaves will be put to death at dawn.
The Crime Scene
Location
Governor Hralib's body was found under the Great Marble Arch of the Temple Grounds, which was being cleared out for his wife Pevifa. This, of course, has led to speculation that Hralib may have been murdered by "Firan religious zealots" who were angry about the desecration of their sacred path and holy monuments. His slave girl, Throgana, was found across town in the Slave Temple (Formerly the True Temple of the Gold Dragon District).
