Overview

The Lanesh Regime (also known simply as "The Regime") is a much whispered about topic in Firan society, but one rarely spoken of openly. One reason for the near conversational taboo is shame -- shame that in the midst of the Shamibelian invasion the Firans had to fight off an uprising of these traitors in their midst. Perhaps the stronger motivation for the hushed tones is terror. The movement that is known as "The Regime" has existed in Firan society for centuries, passing on oral history and tradition to its members that the rest of the people have long since forgotten. That the movement has maintained such secrecy while, at the same time, infiltrating and recruiting members from every social class and every clan, puts most Firans ill at ease and the mystery surrounding the movement only adds to the fear.

Known History & Speculation

There are many stories circulating about the Regime, most of them untrue. While the Firans who fled to the Caldera City during the Great War have very distinct memories of the Regime's uprising there -- the assassination of Clan Leader Firgalas and the attempted assassination of Ranivor Elianos, for instance -- the Firans who lived under the Shamibelian occupation have no memories of this at all and either discount the stories they hear, or embellish the tales beyond recognition.

What most Firans seem fairly certain about is that the Regime is comprised of worshippers of Drik, that they hate the Ranivor and will try to assasinate Elianos and his family at the first opportunity, that the Regime is somehow connected to the Cockatrice Clan, that the Regime worked with the Shamibelians during the occupation, that they are zealots, often killing themselves before revealing a secret, that they executed Firgalas in front of a crowd of thousands in the Caldera City, that they are led by an Emperor and Empress and that the Regime has some interest with incest and twins.

Rumors about the Lanesh Regime

Conflicting rumors about the Regime include:

a) That they are freedom fighters who oppose the unification of the
   clans under the Ranivor

   under a more oppressive system
b) That Bannos was a member of the Regime but left the organization
c) That Bannos is still a member of the Regime
d) That Lanester is still alive and reorganizing the Regime in the
   Caldera City
e) That Lanester is dead and Elianos killed him in order to keep him
from implicating Bannos and Elianos' mother Mosa in the plot
f) That the Regime hates twins and that's why they sought to ritually
   kill the Ranivor's young sons
g) That the Regime reveres twins and that's why they sought to
capture the Ranivor's sons and make them part of the Regime
h) That the Regime plans an uprising against the Gods themselves
i) That the Regime seeks to impose a theocracy
j) That the Regime is the oldest Firan noble line and seeks to ensure
   the purity of noble blood
k) That the Regime is comprised of people who would do away with the
Firan system of nobility and let commoners rule
l) That there are no members of the Regime still left alive
m) That there are members of the Regime still in every social class
and clan, waiting for their moment and collecting information about
   the past.

Elianos on the Regime

All that Elianos would say on the subject is that the Emperor and the Empress will no longer plague the Firans and that Lanester was the Emperor of the Lanesh Regime. Though many people who were in the Caldera City during the Great War remember that a man who looked exactly like Bannos helped lead the rebellion, Elianos vouched for Bannos' loyalty and has stated that Bannos' twin brother Lannos was actually the traitor.

Elianos has warned the people to be on the lookout for persons with a tattoo of the ancient Cockatrice. In fact, it's because so many members of the Regime were tattooed with this symbol that Elianos dismissively referred to the Regime as 'The Chicken People'. Elianos never spoke to the people definitively about the motivation of the Regime, nor did he give an explanation of what happened to the supposed Emperor 'Lanester'. Sources close to the Ranivor say that he fears speculation will only give credence and power to an organization that he has crushed. Others say that the Elianos seeks to minimize the pain of remembering that he was compelled to kill his own brother, Trannos, a member of the Regime.
