Levels

Firan characters are divided into four different levels for out-of-character purposes. Level indicates a character's connection to the game and their ability to change the game's structure (political lines, survivability, and so on).

Level does not indicate how fun a character is! A Level III character can be more fun than a Level I character. Also, not every Level I (Feature) character requires an application, though it's more likely than for a Level III (Citizen) character.

Staff will sometimes raise a character's level if they perform outstanding deeds. Staff very rarely lowers a character's level.

Level I: Features

Features are the movers and shakers of the Firan world. If Firan were a movie, these would be the leading roles. Staff watches Features carefully and very occasionally tell them what to do (only when the stability of the game is at stake). Political leaders, crime lords, generals, high priests, and other influential people tend to be Level I characters.

Level II: Companions

Companions are the in-between characters. They are not as powerful or influential as Features, but they certainly are a bigger "radar blip" than Citizens. These characters tend to have wealth, notoriety, influence, or social ties to Features. A griffon pilot might be a Level II because he holds a rare position, has a special skill, is somewhat well-known, yet doesn't hold a lot of actual power to change the game.

Level III: Citizens

Citizens are the everyday characters of the Firan world. They tend to have little influence on the game and staff tends to leave them alone as much as possible (in terms of directing them in OOC ways). If you want a "slice of life" character, look for a Level III Citizen. The soldiers, crafters, innkeepers, Dove girls, and smiths are mostly III's. These characters can make a large and lasting impact on other characters, but rarely change the overall structure of the world.

Level IV: Original Characters

Since the end of 2005, Firan has supported players creating their own characters. These characters give players the ability to write their own personalities and backgrounds, roll their own stats, and choose their own physical traits. The system controls combinations of character features to ensure that the character is thematically correct when it enters the game. Original Characters do have some downsides, though. They statistically have fewer points in their stats, and they don't have customized descriptions like other characters.

To create your own character on Firan, log in and type 'create a character'.
