Overview

Only cave and mountain lions are native to the Firan woodlands. Larger lions with scraggly manes are said to come from the Southern plains once occupied by the Ticanee and from the Bonduin Plains to the East, past the mountains. Even so, lions of all varieties play an important part in Firan history and religion.

Lions and Religion

Cave lions are said to be sacred to the Goddess of War, Srenna. However, in ancient mythology, the God of Hate Drik is often referred to as "The Lion Prince."

Lions and Mythology

The lion has a long history in the mythological history of the Firan people. For example, the Chimera is a beast that many swear to have seen with their own eyes, and is comprised of three parts: a lion, a goat, and a dragon. Most claim to have encountered the beast in the early 30s A.U. when it regularly terrorized Anarinuell and the surrounding countryside. It was after killing (and then resurrecting) Lord Xegolus that the Chimera was separated into its three individual parts and three quests were launched to reunite the beast. Although the Firan people confronted the lion during this period, most suspect that the frequent lion appearances late in the year 40 A.U. and in early 41 A.U. are of another variety -- for example, many think of Drik's title as "Lion Prince" and the fact that Shamibelian raids coincided with the lion plague.

(The wiki file on the Chimera includes the complete story of the separation of the beast and reunification quest.)

Lions and History

At several points during Firan history, lions have plagued the Firan realms, coming out of their lairs to attack citizens in the city streets. Some blame this on the Gods being angry. Others claim that Shamibelians have been letting them loose in the city walls.
