In the aftermath of a Griffon Clan player semi-randomly expressing her discontent with TinyPlot: Operation New Start and abruptly re-rostering, Steph had the following chat with the Griffons:
[Griffon] Steph says, "So talk to me, Gruffles ;) How are things going?"

[Griffon] Darius says, "I think that comparison is a bit excessive - personally, as a completely new person to this game and this channel, I was taken aback when I read your message to her. What better place to vent than amongst friends, especially when many of them are in the same position. Regardless...we're beating a dead horse here. What's done is done."
[Griffon] Draft Dodging Vemsikos snugs Steph
[Griffon] Steph says, "And so that you know, Carina's player has quit the game in a huff at least 5 times since I've been running it, so this is not new."

[Griffon] Steph says, "I'm just sorry that it played out on the griffon channel and that I didn't get a chance to talk to her about her concerns."
[Griffon] Draft Dodging Vemsikos is of two minds of this, actually. I think Sylvie was right to suggest she not take out her frustrations in that way here - in fact, when that message came through, I was in the process of writing a similar one - but I also think that the wording with the timing could've been better.
[Griffon] Moat-diver Ion says, "Sylvie-In this case, I feel that the Griffon channel is a great way to get the entire clan's feedback, identify any problem, and come up with a constructive solution. Oh, I -suppose- we could page everyone in the clan...but I'm not certain how that's particularly different."

[Griffon] Steph is just getting back from a weekend break. We spent two weeks writing for Ellish and one solid week GMing without break, so I needed a weekend to recover. I'm sure nothing happened so big in my absence that it couldn't wait for me to talk to you guys today, right?
[Griffon] Bad Influence = Daemio says, "Oh! Steph while you're on chan, I have something I'm confuzzled about maybe you can clear it up for me?"
[Griffon] Momma Griff Carana says, "Nothing major has happened. I think alot of folks mostly were frustrated that they went and then just had to sit and twiddle their thumbs. We didn't have a chance to prepare and such because well...most of us were left out of the loop"
[Griffon] Bad Influence = Daemio says, "about the whole Griffons leaving the military thing?"
[Griffon] Tart Supplier Trysta says, "I would have liked to know what Carina was specifically upset about, since when she came on, it looked like she was already upset. Not that Sylvie caused it. Because as of yesterday, she, Dar, Onkit and I had gotten over our feelings, and were planning the next deployment."
[Griffon] Steph nods to Carana. Well, at worst, it meant you spent six days rping with one another in a military situation as a clan for like the first time since Scirlut. Is that really so infuriating that people should have a melt down? I mean, really?
[Griffon] Bad Influence = Daemio nods there was that too :( What's up with Carina, I was just Rping with her yesterday?
[Griffon] Moat-diver Ion would not know, Steph, without having the chance to ask Carina personally.
[Griffon] Steph says, "I'm not trying to be argumentative, it's just that I know Shelly GM'd at least three missions for the Griffons off the cuff, but nobody died or was stuck without a historical setting for RP or anything right? People are just this mad that some folks didn't have a lot to do?"
[Griffon] Moat-diver Ion says, "But yes. I was hoping for clarification on the griffs leaving the repmil thing too. I've been mostly handwaving:)"
[Griffon] Steph says, "What's your question, Daemio?"
[Griffon] Bad Influence = Daemio says, "I think Steph cause you came on channel and seemed to want people to go, people expected that you guys had prepared stuff for us there. I didn't realize Srenni's choices had caught you off guard until we were there. Unfortunitely that meant a lot of people, particularly the commoners that went felt that they'd been snookered into going and not getting to effect things you know? I think largely the issue was that we oocly had a lot of miscommunication about what was going on and expectations. If that makes sense."
[Griffon] Moat-diver Ion says, "Steph- I think it's more that people went in with really really high hopes, and just about everyone had different ideas as to what they'd have really liked to do, etc."
[Griffon] Moat-diver Ion says, "And (maybe) what Daemio said. I wasn't in the south to see."
[Griffon] Bad Influence = Daemio says, "my question was your emit says that people were turning in their greens and defecting. Should griffon military people be leaving the military entirely or just be AWOL? And also are we talking about those of us in the guard as well? Or just the military?"
[Griffon] Steph says, "I suppose I could see why there would be some low level frustration over such a thing, but the response really seems disproportionate. I mean, seriously, when I go to a party expecting a good band and I get no band and just chips, it doesn't really merit more than my turning to Adam and going, "This sucks, take me to McDonald's after." I don't normally get into a fight over it."
[Griffon] Tart Supplier Trysta says, "1) People had expectations that were higher because of the hype. These were not reasonable (I had a long discussion with Rikon about this, and I wanted to slap him, which isn't like us). But I guess he's right. I hate saying that. 2) When we did have missions, there was miscommunication on times, cancellations, what the missions would be, and who would be needed. 3) WE were unprepared. This has actually been a really good slap to us, because we, as a clan, are /entirely/ disorganized, military-wise. MUST be fixed. We are not lackadaisical Eagles, and our disorganization showed, making us even more irritated. 4) Uncertaintly over expected clan behavior. Should we be upset with Griffons who didn't defect until the last minute? Are Griffon repmil who went, but were not deployed, in the same trouble as those who did?"
[Griffon] Steph says, "Daemio what I would do is go to your commanding officer in the Republic military and explain that given Cortik's accusations and the way the Griffons were treated by the Republic military, you don't feel like you could really serve and are thinking about resigning, and see if said officer could talk you out of it."
[Griffon] Steph takes Trysta's concerns in turn.
[Griffon] Momma Griff Carana says, "That said, I was thrilled that the clan had some things to react to and we thank you very much for that. It was the first time I had felt the clan buzzing and excited about something since Skirlut."
[Griffon] Bad Influence = Daemio doesn't get on with his CO but I'll talk to my fellow guard buddies. Daemio's got ic reasons to be involved with the guard so I'll... figure something out. I know Zeynus and I are both in odd situations with the guard and the whole clan vs republic situation atm.
[Griffon] Moat-diver Ion says, "This place is probably more than a party with chips to some people, too. There seems to be a lot of fairly heavy emotional investment."
[Griffon] Steph says, "1) The hype was my fault, I suppose, but seriously, I don't even _have_ a Griffon alt and I nearly misted up when the Griffon flag got raised over Ellish. I would have wanted to be there. It's a hugely historic moment that you could tell your kids about even if all you did was fill Srenni's water canteen. So I said it was really important and awesome, because historically it is. And also, we had no idea if the Republic and the Griffons and the Dragons were actually going to have a war. Had things gone otherwise, you would have been _in battles_ all week. As it turned out though, the game's PC leadership was smart and saavy and avoided the fight, and I personally think that's probably a _good_ thing even though you were more bored than you might otherwise have been."
[Griffon] Moat-diver Ion says, "Which is good! This place beats out chips, and chips are awesome. But. :)"
[Griffon] Breedin' Griffons Pelias says, "There is the fact that the griffons are getting hatred poured at them for not mustering their airforce in time but that from what I was told there was never an opportunity for them to do so. Did the Griffon airforce really just sit there?"
[Griffon] Moat-diver Ion didn't even know whether we've -got- an airforce
[Griffon] Momma Griff Carana hehs, "We don't have a PC airforce currently
[Griffon] Momma Griff Carana says, "And OOC the leadership is all pretty new to this"
[Griffon] Steph nods to Ion. Fair enough, but nobody should be more emotionally invested than me. And sometimes I feel like a complete criminal for running a free game. I mean, I used to be loved a lot more when I didn't do shit for anybody else. Getting this level of anger from people because I failed to give them stuff that they wanted starts to hurt my feelings after 11 years.
[Griffon] Breedin' Griffons Pelias says, "and thats ic hate. We definitely have one Ion. The PC one consists of umm.. me... though"
[Griffon] Breedin' Griffons Pelias says, "and I don't have any combat/archery yet"
[Griffon] Bad Influence = Daemio says, "Steph I have to tell you the most awesomest thing. Srenni posed raising the flag and then a few minutes later I got the HAPPY BIRTHDAY emit. It was really rather rocking good timing."
[Griffon] Moat-diver Ion grins at Steph. I avoid being staff most places for that reason:P
[Griffon] Moat-diver Ion says, "Or when I am staff, I hide in a code-y hole."
[Griffon] Steph says, "Ok, back to Trysta's points. #2: I can't speak to the mission miscommunications b/c that was in Shelly's purview. But certainly I can talk to her and make sure that if she screwed up on that she owns up to it and does something to make it up to you guys."
[Griffon] Steph says, "We had planned for 6 Republic missions. We actually ran closer to 18 missions total."
[Griffon] Moat-diver Ion says, "But yes. There does seem to have been a lot of confusion, too, especially when it comes to clan abilities from NPCs vs clan abilities from PCs. Additionally, I would have preferred to have had a few more specifics on some of the emits. For instance, it was a real shock to me when I was told that all repmil griffs were to turn in their armor and defect. Were there beatings? Did some Griff troop NPCs get killed by repmil soldiers? Was it just mostly threats?"
[Griffon] Momma Griff Carana apologizes but has to go, "Could someone possible log this so we can put it up for the rest of the Griffs?
[Griffon] Steph says, "We didn't know the Griffons were coming until the last minute. It was a Res Day request. We could have used only NPCs and just given you white emits, but we thought that as characters you would want to be there, for historical reasons, and so we encouraged you to go. I still think that was the right choice. I hope you do too."
[Griffon] Steph nods to Carana. I'll log it and put it up.
[Griffon] Momma Griff Carana hughughugs, "Thanks Steph. THank you for everything, the job is often thankless but we all really appreciate everything you do for us."
[Griffon] Moat-diver Ion says, "I imagine this also made it more difficult on the repmil leadership. If I were in Argin's position, I wouldn't know what to do, given that 3/4s of my griff troops packed up and left and I'm not entirely certain why...besides the fact that they were pressured, somehow."
[Griffon] Bad Influence = Daemio nods Steph, while we didn't have as much 'excitement' as the Republic, I'll take the tour where we actually bring everyone home any day over the one where people are killed and left behind.
[Griffon] Moat-diver Ion says, "Yes. We really do appreciate all the scenes that were run. Thank you :)"
[Griffon] Steph says, "And I appreciate you guys too. You help tell a beautiful story. And the Griffon Clan is actually one of my favorite clans on the mush. I don't want to see us have a melt down b/c things were chaotic."
[Griffon] Steph says, "Ion can you save your big question till I'm done with Trysta's points, then re-ask it? I am having trouble mult-tasking :P"
[Griffon] Moat-diver Ion says, "Oh, yes, sorry :)"
[Griffon] Moat-diver Ion says, "Would it help if the Griffon clan were to get together 1-2 weeks beforehand, and generate a short list of 3-4 things to focus on that require GM assistance, and 3-4 things that can be done mostly autonomously? Just to bring everyone onto the same page?"
[Griffon] Steph says, "I also admit to one of the rescheduled missions being my fault, b/c I got a job opportunity at the last minute and had to go to a meeting one night and I couldn't get out of it. So we had to flip two of the missions, but there was nothing I could do about that short of give up a job opportunity to GM on Firan and if I did that I think most of you guys would think I was more nuts than I already am :P"
[Griffon] Moat-diver Ion says, "Nah. Jobs totally come first."
[Griffon] Steph says, "Ok, as for Trysta's 3rd point, Griffon Disorganization, that is a problem. For a few years now I've been trying to beat the steady drum about how the Griffon Clan is actually quite militaristic. Previous Luna's and Judanus' have tried to push that too, but I suspect that the kind of alts that people are choosing in the Griffon Clan are not reflecting that. Add that to the fact that Judanus' player has been shifted to a working schedule that makes him unable to play, and Luna re-rostering all happening right as this war season came up, it added to a sense of throwing your proxies in the deep end."
[Griffon] Steph says, "I happen to think that Srenni, in particular, performed marvelously ICly. She faced down the Republic and all the other vultures who are trying to steal your city, she did it on a wing and a prayer, and she raised the flag over your city. You can bet that Luna and Judanus will never get over the fact that it was a neo-noble proxy who did this and not them. (And I won't let them forget it either.) But that is an unfortunate conjunction of the wrong PCs being inactive or on the roster at the wrong time. However, I also look at it as an opportunity for other people to step up, which a lot of you did."
[Griffon] Bad Influence = Daemio says, "We're a 'young clan' that way. We always have been. People end up leading in the Griffon clan cause they have to when they might not have normally. Look at Carana :)"
[Griffon] Steph says, "And I think we can turn this into a productive situation by using it as an example as to why the Griffons have to be prepared to go anywhere and fight anytime at a moment's notice. If you guys get that ethos down, the other clans won't be able to touch you."
[Griffon] Steph says, "Ok, Trysta's last point: I don't think Griffons should be mad at those who didn't defect until the last minute. You should approach it as if a sibling of yours wasn't 'seeing the light' fast enough. Talk with them. Argue with them. Get them to see reason."
[Griffon] Steph says, "And I figure the people who didn't deploy didn't deploy, so you wouldn't really know what they would or could have done, so no need to create angst there."
[Griffon] Steph says, "Did I address everything?"
[Griffon] Breedin' Griffons Pelias is just unsure with all the speeches etc that have gone on if the griffon airforce (npc as it is) mustered to help the republic airforce. Since I really don't know right now.
[Griffon] Steph says, "I think the truth is simply that the Griffons didn't know there was an air battle going on for them to join. It's not like the Republic sent them a messenger. It's not the age of radar and radio communications. Until they saw the feathers falling and such they had no idea."

[Griffon] Jon says, "Most of the RepMil didn't really know there was an air battle going on until it was halfway through."

[Griffon] Moat-diver Ion says, "Actually, I'm oocly not entirely certain why there would be pressure to go as a Griffon instead of as a Republic soldier, given that Ellish was supposed to be a collaborative effort in the first place. Am I missing something important?"
[Griffon] Steph says, "Now, are other clans going to accuse you of fecklessness? Of course they are! Gold Dragons in particular are going to spread the story that you guys couldn't be bothered to help. If Argin is smart and wants to keep the military together, he will probably quash that rumor. But ICly you have to tough that out."
[Griffon] Breedin' Griffons Pelias says, "That answers that then Steph. I kinda figured they were probably busy fending off their own attack."
[Griffon] Bad Influence = Daemio says, "Dringles suck any how. :P"
[Griffon] Tart Supplier Trysta says, "Yes, thank you Steph."
[Griffon] Breedin' Griffons Pelias grins. Yeah I just wanted to know if it was true or a rumour.
[Griffon] Steph says, "And, you can always point out to those who make accusations that Griffon Clan soldiers were flying in the Republic air force at the time, so clearly it's not like you guys weren't helping in some fashion."
[Griffon] Steph says, "But, Pelias, ICly you can't be like "Steph said that our air force didn't know, so shut up!""
[Griffon] Steph says, "I mean, the real truth of things is often irrelevant on Firan."
[Griffon] Breedin' Griffons Pelias laughs. I know. But at least I know which side of the fence is the real one from my pov.

[Griffon] Bad Influence = Daemio nods Steph you might want to throw a post on Military reminding them they're suposed to be all prejudiced cause in my RP I haven't seen any of it (except for of course a with Cortik but we hate eachother on a good day any how :P)
[Griffon] Tart Supplier Trysta says, "Oh, and uh. For the next rotation, can the same people go, or is it just repmil, or does it have to be different people? (And no fussing either way, just need to know for planning)."
[Griffon] Steph says, "Ion, the pressures that got you to defect were Cortik's speech and just a general attitude from the Republic soldiers that you weren't welcome in the ranks. And Argin failed a check :P"
[Griffon] Steph says, "Daemio I think the PCs are always 'exceptions' in some sense. So maybe instead of getting them to be jerks to you, you can make up stories about how some of their fellow clansemen have been treating you. Turn it into a scene. A story ;)"

[Griffon] Steph says, "Trysta, the same people can go for the next tour of duty, but I'm actually kind of nervous now about how it should go. I don't want to explicitly ask for PCs to go if you guys are going to be upset if it's not as active or planned as RepMil, but I also don't want to tell you that you can't go, b/c there is a good chance that both the Griffons and the Republic Military will be working together this time."

[Griffon] Draft Dodging Vemsikos thinks what you were missing is that the war to regain Ellish was a collaborative effort, because the Republic realized that if they didn't do it as such, the Shammies would run into Anarinuell.

[Griffon] Steph says, "You guys are talking about the IC truth or the Real OOC truth?"

[Griffon] Moat-diver Ion says, "Mostly to clear up my OOC understanding of the situation as to why there would be significant pressure for Griffons to go as Griffons rather than repmil Griffs"
[Griffon] Steph says, "For your clan, this is your ancestral city more than any other on the grid. Firalut was destroyed during the Great War and has never, despite all efforts to the contrary, been able to put into working order. You were only able to get half of Scirlut back. But this is the city where most of your relatives made their last stand. So many of your family members and ancestors died here. Ellish is for you guys like Jerusalem for the Jews if that helps put it into context."
[Griffon] Jariko did wonder wtf had happened regarding Firalut. It just kind of.....stopped.
[Griffon] Draft Dodging Vemsikos thinks that's a pretty good comparison, Steph. :)
[Griffon] Tart Supplier Trysta says, "That helps explain why we'd be so adamant about not standing for it to be a Republic City, then, too."

[Griffon] Steph says, "So, the OOC truth of it is that the Republic has yet to agree that it will be a Griffon City. The Clan Council has yet to rule. However, there have been made noises like that. Not enough noises probably for the Griffons to feel secure. The minute they heard that other armies might be going there to stake a claim (aka. the Cockatrice), Srenni made the decision that there was no way in earth she would allow another clan to steal it out from under you guys. So, in violation of what you told the Republic you'd do, you went."
[Griffon] Bad Influence = Daemio chuckles. I was just pointing out why it's so important to many people.
[Griffon] Steph says, "In short, this situation has been created by insecurity."
[Griffon] Steph says, "And your clan is not about to put up with even taking the chance that this city will be stolen from you. That's why you've acted the way you have."
[Griffon] Tart Supplier Trysta grins. Gold Dragons and Bears. We're 'helping' the Cockatrice regain control.
[Griffon] Moat-diver Ion ohs. I heard oocly that the CC had indicated that it would be a Griffon city, no questions asked. Poink.

[Griffon] Steph nods. You may have heard that ICly, Ion, so keep that IC, but if you look at the rulings, no such ruling has been made.
[Griffon] Breedin' Griffons Pelias says, "nothing is guaranteed until it's signed and sealed and even then..."
[Griffon] Bad Influence = Daemio says, "god even then it's hardly guaranteed"
[Griffon] Moat-diver Ion says, "No, I heard it OOCly as something I should've been aware of ICly as common knowledge, though I cannot for the life of me remember who said it. Bother!"

[Griffon] Steph nods. And for Griffons, who have had a rough time of it over the years, as much as you love the Republic, you don't trust the Dragons _ever_ and you probably have a bit of a dysfunctional ability to trust other clans.
[Griffon] Steph says, "Ion I don't know who would have told you that OOCly, but it's easily disproved. Go do a @record search."
[Griffon] Steph says, "Also, you would probably knwo that ICly a lot of soldiers from other clans feel like the Republic should own that city, not the Griffons, and some of them even have expressed bitterness over why they should risk their lives to liberate a Griffon City. So you guys are probably in no mood to sit back and let the Republic handle thins."

[Griffon] Moat-diver Ion says, "Oh, that Ion has encountered. He's even gotten into a few arguments over it. But he figured the Griffs need Republic resources, since we're flat-broke"

[Griffon] Bad Influence = Daemio says, "it's kinda tricky to work around her absense right now. I know it came up with Argin saying we'd done something with out our clan leader's approval or something and I was thinking well... we can't."

[Griffon] Draft Dodging Vemsikos says, "Generally with the @roster, people are considered to just be off camera...but I have seen it done with Clan Leaders and other people of import that they're out of town."
GM EMIT: Clan Leader Luna Corinala was visiting the Caldera City on a Diplomatic Mission the past month when she fell ill. She has been unable to return home, but sends word back to the Clan that she is touched and moved by the notion that the Griffon Clan has raised its flag over Ellish, and that she hopes the best artists in the realm will render the scene to her so that she can see with her imagination what she wishes she had seen with her own eyes. Healers say that the situation may be very grave indeed, because Lord Judanus, never known for being an overly sentimental husband has been at Luna's bedside to tend her. Some say that this means he actually loves her. Others say that he expects her to die and wants to be sure to be near the medallion when she does.'.

I've had my own mishaps with staff in the past, perhaps just difference of opinions, but in the end, I do enjoy a whole hell of a lot of the things the Staff on Firan do. It's actually one of the most active staffed games I've played on in the past 13/14 years of my online life in a game."

So far, the Griffons and the Republic haven't explored many squares, so there's lots more opportunities."
