A large part of the game revolves around the acquisition of money, to pay bills, buy food, find a place to live, buy pretty clothes, etc. Now, by all means, you don't have to make a lot of money. But you may find that you want to sleep somewhere other than the Barnacle, and wear clothes that say more than 'a silk tunic'. So. Thus, the 'make' command. Most people in the game, aside from nobles, are involved in a trade of some sort. Most of these trades involve making or manufacturing something, whether that is clothing, wooden goods, weapons, armor, jewelry, glass, or songs.

The majority of coded items in the game are created by players from ingredients using the 'make' command. See 'help make' for a really nice synopsis. The make command checks for the item's ingredients, then checks your skills, and, if you succeed, produces the object.

For more detail, please see: 'help make', 'help @product', 'help customization', as well as '@sheet/skills' and 'news vocation'.

If you are one of the few who do not make a living by actually making something, that is, a soldier, a thief, a gladiator, a guard, priestess, prostitute, bard, poet, moocher... Often your @sheet/background will have a note at the bottom giving suggestions for what you might do to start out. Guards and soldiers will want to join the military; gladiators will want to find managers to get involved in matches. Priestesses will need to find their High Priest and get set up in a temple, thieves and prostitutes will have to work out arrangements with the underworld bosses, poets and bards need to write, and moochers need to find rich friends to bleed dry. If you have a question or concern about how to pay your bills, don't hesitate to ask on the Help channel.
