Mounted Combat
Combat performed uses the same code instructions as normal combat. Where it differs is in the generally accepted restrictions placed upon someone during mounted combat. It is reasonable to attack either the mount or the pilot/rider.
For example:
- Long bows may not be used when mounted.
Information on how to steer and navigate when mounted is available here: Piloting A detailed tutorial on using ranged weapons is available here: Tutorial 10d: Ranged Fighting A detailed tutorial on melee combat can be found here: Tutorial 10c: Melee Fighting
Horseback Combat
If there are any special rules relating to combat from a landbased animal they will be put here.
Griffon Combat
As with all mount commands the following use some of your mounts ep reserves.
You first set a style. There are four choices. Gattack, Gberserk, Gdefend and none. This can be done before you even leave the aviary. The command for this is mount <style>
Once in sight of your target you use: Mount engage <target>. The griffon will then attempt to successfully engage the target. Please note that it is considered cheating if you do not attack as soon as you are able. This is because a griffon attacks by swooping in, attacking and then flying off and thus it is unfair if someone is pinned for longer than the combat timer.
When the combat timer has run its course (this can be seen using Mount @combat) you should Mount Attack <target>. Your griffon/eagle will then attempt to attack your target before automatically disengaging.
Airbourne Combat
During airbourne combat a pilot has two forms of attack available to him/her. He can shoot using any ranged weapon as and when his personal timers enable him to do so. At present pilots are required to use the archlong style to shoot from the air down to the ground and either archlong or archmid for griffon to griffon shooting.
If your griffon/eagle is taking damage it is important to remember that it will crash if it takes too much damage and the impact is likely injure you also. A mounts current level of health can be determined by using Mount @combat. When using mount @combat it is important to remember that this is an ooc tool permitted to enable a pilot to judge how healthy their mount is during flight. It should not be used in any other situation and must not be used to replace Diagnose <mount>
A detailed tutorial on using ranged weapons is available here: Tutorial 10d: Ranged Fighting
Landed Pilots
When grounded the pilot can use any of the usual attack methods available to him/her including thrown weapons, archery, a spear and griffons natural attacks. When a pilot is mounted upon the griffon it is impossible for a ground based troop to engage him or her. Be warned that a griffon is very vulnerable to attack when in this position and there is nothing to prevent the enemy from killing your mount.
The pilot can use a spear (and only a spear) to melee attack those on the ground when he is mounted and his griffon is landed.
It is rumoured that an exceptionally skilled pilot can ride a griffon into an enclosed space to take advantage of the height advantage this provides. This has not, at this date, ever been demonstrated and due to the rarity of griffon animals is somewhat discouraged.
See the section on griffon combat for information on how to make a griffon or giant eagle fight.
Important Rules
Some of the rules are:
- At present pilots are required to use the archlong style to shoot from the air down to the ground and either archlong or archmid for griffon to griffon shooting.
- When grounded the pilot can use any of the usual attack methods available to him/her including thrown weapons, archery, a spear and griffons natural attacks.
- The ONLY weapons useable from griffon-back are short bows, thrown weapons, and spears, due to the reach considerations of being mounted on the back of a giant flying beast. (Codely it is impossible to even wield a weapon that would not be usable from griffon (or giant eagle) back. The way to find out if you can wield a weapon on a griffon is to appraise <item> and look for griffonwield in the list of tags at the bottom of the page.)
