Overview
Norik bears a passing resemblance to a golden bean pole, tall and slender. He is a rather grumpy man with a mouth that seems to naturally downturn. He has a small nose that he often scrunches whenever he is displeased with something. While he rarely smiles, when he does he could charm the birds down from the trees and into the oven. One blue-eyed look through his wispy pale eyelashes could soften even the hardest of hearts.
A soldier most often found in a shiny set of Republic Green Armor, Norik has become a military man through and through. Even though at first he only joined up to be with his sister, Karlana, the military has become somewhat of a family to him. He takes his duties seriously, sometimes too much so. There is a certain irony to his current assignment. Being the brother of Nestra Apellon, leading democrat of the Eagle Clan, while serving Prince General Argin, inventor of Argocracy, is as controversial as one can get.
Early History
Adopted at young age by Yukar and Melda Karik, Norik grew up in a cottage on the Marcus Estate. A grumpy child by nature, he found a soul companion in the form of his adoptive sister Karlana. Even at a young age the two were inseparable, going on adventures together and being pretty much the stabilizing factors of each other's lives. Life was good at the estate. His father toiled as a fisherman, while his mother was a nanny to Antonius Marcus' household.
Then, the Antonian Apostasy took place. Even though the Karik family was not part of the treasonous crimes commited by Antonius, their family link to the man (through Norik's aunt Inea, Antonius first wife) was enough to have the whole family arrested. They lost everything. Their cottage and most of their belongings. Eventually found innocent the Kariks were released from jail after several months of incarceration. At first without home and money, they rented an apartment in the Old City and started to rebuild their life. It was Melda specifically who worked hard to give them back a measure of their old life.
Time went by and the Karik children grew up. At the age of 17 Karlana decided that she was going to join the military. Not wanting to leave his sister subjected to the dangers of frontline duty, he immediately signed up too! Starting his military career as a clan district guard, he later became member of the First Division. From there he moved on to serve as an archer in the Fourth and Second Division, taking part in the historic campaign of 42 AU.
Recent History
Norik is a military man through and through. After the war he became an archer with the air force until Prince General Argin decided to turn them into an own company. He temporarily served as the company's XO before applying to a position as adjunct to the Prince General, a position which he retains to this day. During the Eagle Civil War he remained faithful and loyal to the Republic, not taking part in the Eagle Exodus but instead remaining within the city. While the Eagles were taking refuge in Lurashar, he forcemarched to Ellish during Operation Trident, where the forces of Prince General Argin relieved the besieged city.
Privately his life has been turbulent at best. Lady Kassia Iberik forced Norik to marry Mes Alexandra, an ex-whore turned into model citizen, in 43 AU. Their marriage did not last long though, for eventually Norik divorced her after she impersonated Clan Leader Ania (see Scandals). He then moved on to court Aziza Marcello after people pointed out that his generous gift of a Griffon Egg ring for her ceremony of souls could be seen as a courtship gift. They had a loving relationship that did not lead to marriage in the end. In 45 AU he married Choni, after a passionate courtship.
Personality & Beliefs
Norik is quite complex for a young man. He is often disapproving of people, in general, but at the same time he desperately wants to be accepted in society. This often times leads him to being a very grumpy and very lonely man. He was adopted, an orphan, and while the family he's been raised with has fully accepted him into their life, there's still this part of him that nags at him that his real family didn't want him. It eats away at him. He tries to make up for it by championing causes. There are two things that he hates most in the world, bullies and people getting hurt senselessly. He understands that sometimes people can get hurt, but it's things that can be avoided that he hates the most; like a certain Clan Leader Zeysani going missing because one's sister used her for bait in order to trap the Kraken. It's things like that which really tear him up. Yet, at the same time, he loves adventure and getting involved in mischief, just so long as it is good, clean mischief.
In the recent years he has embraced military life. It has become somewhat of a second family to him and the young man desperately wants to prove that he is worthy of being a part of it. He observes his duties to the utmost. While this does not make him that popular with some it does serve to assure him that he is doing his best to serve.
Norik is a Zinian. He has strong faith in the God of the Sea. His recent pirate adventure, where he spent nearly a day swimming in ice cold water, only proved that Zin must be protecting him. Afterall he is still alive, right?
Ranks & Offices
- Republic Military Captain
- Norik is a Captain of the Republic Military, currently serving as adjunct to Prince General Argin.
- Eagle Clan Military Captain at Sea
- Prince High General Rislan, currently interim leader of the Eagle Clan while it is under the protection of the Ranivor's Medallion, has recently assigned him to be a Captain in the newly rebuilt Eagle Navy. Good thing that! Especially since Norik has absolutely no idea how to steer a ship. But Prince Rislan has been working with the man to get him up to speed.
Family Life
Norik is an adoptive child. When he was about 2 years old he was brought to Melda by Mes Ezarette. Lucky for him, Melda and Yukar agreed to adopt him. They treated him like he was their own son, a fact he is very thankful about. Many other adopted children are never made to feel as welcome as he was. Norik is proud of being a Karik and will do everything in his power to make the family prosper.
But there is still this nagging feeling that his real mom might still be alive. At times he dreams of meeting her.
Parents
- Norik's relationship to his adoptive father is a bit distanced. While he does care for Norik and listens to his woes, there have never been any real father-son moments between the two men. Norik sometimes wonders what it would have been like to have a real father.
- It was Melda's kindness that allowed for Norik to be adopted into the Karik family. The woman is a kind-hearted gentle person and she has gone out of her way to make Norik feel as part of the Karik family. He loves her dearly for this and would do nearly anything to ensure she has safe and happy. Melda has been supporting the democratic movement, for some reason that Norik does not understand. It doesn't change his relationship to her though.
Siblings
- Norik does not remember much about his eldest brother. He was killed in the aftermath of Zeysani's War, when a mob of people stormed his apartment and killed him for being a halfie sympathizer. Norik is a bit mad about his brother, for he thinks that Omay did a lot of reckless things despite the wishes of his parents. Someone as lucky as him - having real parents and all - should have been a bit more respectful to his elders.
- Avni is Norik's oldest sister. She's alright, as far as sisters go. He doesn't hate her like Karlana seems to. She's nice to him and always trying to get him to smile. But, sometimes she can be a bit bossy, and so he can't help but agree with Karlana on that point. She married a fellow named Arik Zaridik and they have three kids together.
- Nestra. She is irresponsible, careless, at times horrible to her children. Not to mention that she is the cause of all the democratic craziness going on in Clan. She has always been one to make sure that people know about the things that hurt them most. Nestra took great delight in telling Norik that he wasn't her real brother and just adopted. Still, Norik loves his sister. She was one of the people abducted by pirates alongside him and proved to be someone who does stick out for others during this. This heightened Norik's respect for her immensely.
- Karlana is the single most important person in Norik's life. The two were roughly the same age when he was adopted and shared the same grumpy outlook on life. It didn't take long for them to befriend each other and within weeks they became inseparable. He shares his secrets with her, turns to her when there is something weighing on his mind. The thought that something could happen to her is unbearable for him - which is the main reason why he joined up with the military when she did. Afterall, he promised to protect her.
- Zintius Karik
- Zintius is different. He's delicate. He's quiet. Norik has dubbed himself as Zintius's protector, and that's really where he's part of the 'dynamic duo' with Karlana. No one touches their brother! Hrmph. It's not that there's anything wrong with Zintius, he's just all too easy to pick on, and Norik can't stand it when others pick on him. He wants to teach his brother how to brawl and to stick up for himself, but Zintius always finds some reason not to be at Norik's lessons. But, Norik is ever persistant and determined to see that his brother learns this useful skill. He will not be deterred!
Marriage
- Choni, formerly of the Dristarna Family
- Norik loves his wife. The young couple met at a training event hosted by the Eagle Captain and he quickly became smitten by her grace, her style and her beauty. Apparently he caught her eyes as well and soon they were spending time flirting. She even joined the Republic Military just to impress him, which is quite a big thing, considering that she hates having to be a soldier for the Griffon Clan. Even before marriage they shared a very close relationship. Norik is willing to give his life to protect her and has proven this by single-handedly killing a lion in 45 AU. The creature, sent to the city by Drik, snuck up on the couple while they were taking a walk through the palace district. Luckily it was spotted by Norik, who interposed himself between beast and maiden. He suffered several injuries, but managed to defeat it.
Children
- Gonia
- Gonia was born on May 29th 46 A.U. She is a big, noisy little baby girl with soulful black eyes and blonde hair, just like mom and dad. His first child, she is the apple of Norik's eye and he spoils her rotten.
- Meldania
- Norikos
- Unfortunately, Norikos was born shortly after Norik's death, so he never met his son.
Accomplishments & Successes
Scandals & Failures
- Marriage and Divorce to Mes Alexandra
- This marriage was arranged by Lady Kassia Iberik. Norik really didn't want to marry this woman, even though he felt moderately comfortable with her. In fact the young man would have preferred to marry noone at all. Their union was turbulent, with Norik moving out to live at the army barracks after their first night as man and wife. They eventually reconciled and lived a few months together. It did not last. Alexandra had the grand idea of impersonating Clan Leader Ania and was consequently banished from the Clan. Norik divorced her and she was stripped of the Karik family name.
- Kidnapped and Abused by Pirates
- During the winter of 45 AU a group of six people was abducted and pressganged by pirates, straight of the docks of Anarinuell! Along with Norik, his sponsor Zerasmus, his sister Nestra, Abirnyn, Dodon and Harvinia (who was highly pregnant at the time!) were taken and set the work on the unnamed pirate ship. Captained by a man called Matar the ship soon turned out to be an utter hellhole. Forced to labour in the cold of winter, with just a tunic to cover them, the group was left without food for several weeks. Beatings were frequent. Matar even cruelly killed the cat of Harvinia, to force her to obey his whims. Eventually circumstances on the ship led to the pirates dumping everyone over board - tied up. Somehow the group survived the cold waters of the winter sea and was washed ashore in Lurashar. Unable to get any help in the Eagle Capital, that still suffered from the turmoil of the recent civil war, Norik carried the unconscious form Harvinia all the way to Anarinuell, only to be held captive by the Ticanee! Even though he was released after a day, they did not thank him for returning the Oshta's steward tothis day. Bloody Savages.
Enemies
- Even though Norik has promised his sister to leave his brother-in-law alone, he hates the man's guts. He is a floofy, craven and idiotic person. How dare he marry his sister Karlana? The man refuses to be part of the clan military, leaving the defense of his children and family solely in the hands of others. He dislikes whoring, drinking and nearly everything else that makes life worthwhile. And he married Norik's sister Karlana!!!
- Nelisha
- At some point in his life Norik was supposed to marry this woman. They had a contract and all. It didn't come to pass, most likely a result of Norik's fear of commitment at that point. She hates him as a result. Loudmouthed and brash she takes every opportunity to insult him. Especially as they were both ordered not to share the same room with each other.
Allies
- Aziza is one of Norik's oldest friends. He knew her as a kid, when she was an orphan at the Temple of Kamnestra and when she grew of age he courted her for a short time. Their marriage was not meant to be. She is now married to Tyrin, but the two still share a deep, fond friendship for each other.
- Zeramus is Norik's sponsor. They share a passion for the military. In recent years they have not had much contact with each other, apart from the short while they were prisoners on a pirate ship.
- Centurion Aervani Verber
- Norik and Aervani share a friendship. They drink together, laugh together and Norik has a good time teasing the woman. She is an awesome pilot, that lives to be on griffon back.
Death
Norik died during the Kinslayer War, when a crazed mob, hungry for the blood of Zaridos stormed the Royal Eagle Mansion. Unwilling to give up on his duties, he interposed himself between the mob and Tamia and her children.
"In the heart of the Eagle Mansion the children and wards of the IstaNeysani family are still being mobbed. A woman shrieks loudly in the distance, repeatedly, either being hacked apart by the crudely made weapons of the mob or worse. The mob itself screams loudly, surging forward as the leaders that once held a tentative hold on their direction seem to burst forward like water breaching a dam. Violence is an underestimation, and blood flecks the walls as glass shatters. In the midst of all, a loyal Eagle soldier is cut down as he bravely stands ground against the rebels, his last words of defiance that "the Prince General would not have wanted this!" and blood of more than one rioting foe on glistening on the edge of Norik's axe blade. And still, the mob screams for more."
His death would not be in vain - Tamia survived the massacre.
Miscellany
Habits
- Cleanliness
- Norik is a very cleanly man. He bathes daily and is usually seen in a spotless armor.
- Wearing Armor
- Much to the chagrin Choni, there is seldom a time when Norik is not wearing his Republic Armor. Despite the massive discomfort it must mean, he seems to wear it like it was his second skin. Choni buys him pretty new clothes, hoping to get him to break this habit. Sofar she has not been successful.
Likes
- Whiskey
- Norik is an Eagle. Of course he loves whiskey.
- Sarojin clothing
- His wife, Choni, owns a set of Sarojin clothing. Seeing her dance in it is one of the sexiest things Norik knows and he cherishes every moment that he can spend with her being dressed like that. It is pretty seductive!
- Tidy Rooms
- Life as a soldier has left Norik with a habit to keep his accomodations perfectly tidy. Tidy to a degree of military precision.
- Whore dolls
- Norik owned a large collection of whore dolls, issued by the Dove Rose to soldiers at the front, during the campaign of 42 AU. When Choni found out about them, she wasn't very pleased about it, so he tossed them all in a bag and gave them to his sister Karlana to safeguard them.
Dislikes
- Bullies
- Norik has a strong dislike for bullies and usually sides with the underdogs. He has a strong sense of justice.
- Rioting Democrats
- They are behaving like a bunch of uppity children. No goals other than whining that they don't have enough say, they are doing too much harm to the Eagle people in general. At least Nestra is trying very hard to keep them in line and from rioting.
- Colognes
- Having lived with a perfumer, Norik is generally not too fond of the smell of cologne on his body. He prefers to be fresh and clean!
- People who marry his sister
- Not all of them. Just the ones that dare marry Karlana. It is an irrational thing for sure. But how dare they?
