What's The Word

Springtime is when the Old City bursts into color after a long drab winter. Springtime is the only time of the year that any beauty can be found amoung the charred and delapited structures. Wildflowers along the riverside dot the banks and sprout between the garbage and the broken rubble. This spring, however, the hardy blooms find themselves trampled under foot as the poor hid and as the Republic military's heavy boots ground them into the dirt. But even as the military withdrew taking with them some of the Old City's most prominent denizens, the hardy wildflowers nurished by the spring rains, rejuvenate to once again dot the banks with bright splashes of color. Wildflowers are hardier than those that are cultivated, just like the Old City itself.

After the soldiers left, slowly but surely the people in the Old City began to return to their homes. Many are missing. What has happened to Panyos and their children? Children thrown in jail? Everyone knows that Panyos and Pakeera have nearly as many children as an average Ticanee. What is it now after this last birth? Ten, maybe only five? Incrediable. It is as if Panyos in his anger over his father's death intends to raise his own army to repopulate the Old City. Pakeera's last birth went well enough. Their one daughter Raynia seems to have every intent on becoming another Jazayeri, beating up the other kidlets with her feet or fists or teeth if otherwise restrained. Orthia doesn't leave the Insula very much any more and clothing orders go unanswered. Many may have forgotten the oath Panyos and his brother Havidius had to take years ago after their father's execution. Panyos works security for his sponsor and takes on occasional axe wielding apprentices. But he also writes. It seems some scrolls were left in the Library which he wrote. Could that be why he has not yet been released from jail? Some of his children are in jail too. The Republic has not been afraid to execute children for the sins of their fathers. Why is Panyos still in jail?

Pakeera was released and confined to Griffon barracks awaiting to leave for Scirlut. What is a non combatant doing going to war? She is a perfumer. She is also a herbalist. Could it be that she will be making healing potions and lotions or poisoning the Scirlut defenders? It's hard to say how they will make use of her skills. But Moira has been released to the same fate as well although she is a woman of peace and runs the Old City clinic. With Pakeera and Moira gone from the Old City streets, who will be there to run the clinic? Who will care for the sick and weak? Who will step up? Maybe that was the Republic's plan... let them poor die off.

Svenja and Angada, while they have had their arguments in the past over the dissing of a certain guard, some wonder now if guard dissing won't become more popular? Neither woman was captured by the guards, evading them and hiding out. Narin was said to have stepped up when no one else would or did for oddly, just before the invasion, Sangreos apparently left. But Narin assisted more than a handful of denizens into a secure hiding place all of whom were quite grateful. That is good leadership, something even the famed Jazayeri didn't display, but it's quite common knowledge that she tends to be lazy. Her son Jariko was captured and taken away and now he too awaits a journey to Scirlut. Agrafina hid with Niobe. Washiwi managed to hide successfully as did Yori. Even Susia found a place to hide. Reesa, the odd haffie hid alone but some say her invisible friends didn't make out as well. Litaros found a safe place to wait out the guards. Susia was not captured. Niobe was said to have helped Narin. Barabus was already in jail for numerous failures at an essay he needs to write. Belis was already in prison for his supposed murder of some waller. Rabianos was captured and held for such bogus charges as 'attempted' murder and other violations. But the whores? What happened to the Whores?

Apparently the Whores were offered a deal they could not refuse after Moira placed Luralee in charge in place of Vixen who is away just now. This brough a reaction from the Viceroy who apparently has a thing for the whore named Bliss, but too it is widely said that Vixen wanted Bliss to fill the leadership role when she was not around. So what exactly happened? Did Moira stand up to the Viceroy? Did he threaten her? Is that why Moira even with her 15 odd thugs was taken and dragged to jail? What ever occured between the Viceroy and Moira, it was apparently was one of the causes for the invasion. If the not main reason, a contributing factor. The whores were placed under Bliss by the Viceroy then whisked away with the offer of a million stenis for them to populate /His/ own personal whore house. It is said that Gilin and perhaps Luralee alone did not take that offer and have since returned to the Dove. Narin is helping them by placing them under his administration. But as to the other whores? No one knows for sure. And some whispered rumors that Moria was freed only because of some actions by a now nameless numbers man, who may have gambled his life away for hers. Rather romantic. Unrequetted love? Some think so. Certainly a close affection. Is this what made Sangroes leave suddenly, no one is quite sure. Apparently this nameless gambler's confession was brought to the clan council and as far as anyone knows could be executed for this confession depending on how his questioning goes. His self confession was given it is said with immunity, but wallers being liars, revoked immunity. (That is a good lesson for all of us about not trusting wallers) He and Moira still share a valuable bank account even though Sangreos has spread the word on the street that the numbers man is no longer welcome here.

There are still many Old City people stuck in the jails and Warrik, the old gossip monger has not been seen since the raid. Is he dead or captured? What could the guards do if the old gossip monger gives up his information? Luckily for him and the old city, he follows the code and goodwives missing sons and husbands, breath a little easier.
