Spring continues, the Ani river swelling, the canals teeming with stench and life

as the Old City bustles about toward the hazy days of summer. Children, dirty and

barefoot scurry about and thugs, wenches and the destitute live, coexisting in

their on ways. Our four intrepid gossips gather on the stone bridge, away from the

bustle of the nook, but in one of the few, practically peaceful spots to reflect

on the past weeks.

Sameera perches on the rail of the bridge, swinging her feet slightly. "So Niobe

went off a while ago, was gone fer quite a bit an' came back spittin' an' hissin'

that it weren't more than jes a wild rat chase. It's amusin' watchin' her stalk

'round pissed 'bout it."

Yelda shakes her head. "Niobe's always been that way, but the littlest one,

Kadia's growing up before our eyes. She picked her very first fight, with that

little Nelisha... I think both of 'em was gonna have their Ceremonies. Kadia

didn', probably to avoid bein' around Nelisha, but neither of 'em died. She's also

been runnin' 'round wit' Genaros an' that haffie Kuda fillin' barrels wit' water

an' sand... good fire protection. Wonder if anyone in th'Ol'City knows how

t'feckin' use 'em, trained like them waller fire fighters is. She's also been

lookin' fer folks t'teach her 'bout potions an' herbs and stuff, healin' fer

th'clinic."

Vellutra shakes her head. "Not that I've heard. But did you see that Yathel's back

around? Smelly and everything still. I cain' decide if he's takin' up art,

scrawlin' graffiti over places, markin' territory, like th'Istems has done. He's

actin' as some sort of protector too, ain' he?"

Sameera nods. "Oh, yeah, he's workin' at th'Dagger fer now too, 'long wit' Asalan

I think. Who do you think's keepin' an eye on who? Niobe? Or them Junos boys? An'

th'other day Yathel got inta a fight wit' Furen right outside. I think Furen went

down, but I was busy keepin' m'nose out of it."

Opalia pipes up, quiet. "Well, there's big stuff movin' anyway. Seems that waller

boy, Karish? Either he moved out on his own or was tol' t'leave an' a whole group

made a move, 'helpin' him get settled' if ya know what I mean. I'm almost afraid

t'ask if that's over 'er not. Lots of faces showin' up... wonder what's gonna go

on now."

Yelda nods. "Well, Asalan has been runnin' th'Ol'City Olympics like Jaz did, an'

folks tried t'do jes a little while ago. I think folks is usin' them t'get

frustrations out wit'out lookin' like they is actually tryin' t'kill each other.

Who knows. But there's movin' goin' on, that's fer sure. It'll be interestin'

t'see what happens."

The four nod and muse... what about the whores? What's going to happen next... to

be sure, life has gotten interesting in the blooming vernal days and should only

continue as the heat rises.
