Official Statement
I should be beyond suspicion! My name is Orsatos Vettle and I have been a good and obedient slave to Master Hralib. He trusted me completely. I can tell you who he didn't trust, though. Empyrean. Master Hralib thought Empyrean was a useless slave--completely worthless. He set him to work learning how to make ropes with some blue-dyed pema. I find it very suspicious that my master's dead body was found, tied up in a carpet, with those same blue ropes that Empyrean was making.
Background
Orsatos was the Palace tutor for many years before his students, the Elianik Princes, allowed the Shamibelians to roll right over them and into Anarinuell. Years of service, training and loyalty, crushed under the wheels of their incompetence. He turned from those fools and is now out for himself, which means being on the side of the Shamibelians. It is through them that he can acheive comfort and survive, not through the old Firan nobility. Fundamentally, he believes that everyone around him is worthy only of his contempt and will only use them to his own ends, cautiously, whether slave or Shamibelian. He does want his freedom, but trusting the Princes who failed them so badly already seems foolish in the extreme.
Relationships
- Hralib -- Orsatos' dead master.
- Throgana -- Hralib's favorite slave. She never liked Orsatos much and the feeling was mutual. Now she's dead too.
- Jalil, Melani, Teonia, Perdita, Emma, Rodiste, and Empyrean -- Hralib's other slaves. Orsatos lives with them.
- Zaridos, Torianos, Savaren, and Lucas -- Former princes and pupils of Orsatos.
Goals
- Orsatos should prove who really killed Hralib so that he is not executed along with the rest of Hralib's less worthy slaves.
- Orsatos should finagle to be inherited or sold to a master that can appreciate his talents.
- Orsatos should hire an informant on the 'inside' of a slave rebellion he suspects is being planned, so that he can thwart it and be properly rewarded by the Shamibelians.
- Orsatos should use his influence as Palace Tutor to convince the Princes that he's really been on their side all along.

Orsatos Round One
Round One Reveal
Everyone knows that Orsatos had come into a position of trust and authority under Hralib--why would he kill him and ruin a good thing?
Hralib found Empyrean to be a nearly worthless slave, and forced him to learn to weave rope to "make himself useful" and gave him a lot of blue dyed pema to work with. The ropes that held the rug around Hralib's body were blue.
Everyone knows that Jalil hated Hralib with a passion, especially since Hralib took Emma's virginity at the Virgin Races once they were captured.
Everyone knows that Melani was a hard slave for Hralib to break, and that he had to sell her husband Torianos in order for her to settle down. She never forgave him for that, and often said that she'd see him dead for it.
Everyone knows that when Hralib wanted to keep Rodiste in line, he would simply threaten to kill the infant child that he begat upon Teonia, and that since he lost his own children in the war, he is very protective of this one little boy, which was born into slavery.
Everyone knows that Melani is Ticanee, one of the "Fire People" and that Hralib's hands and face were burned. Might she have been trying to send him a message of her people's savagery?
Everyone knows that Dyanna loves her new life as an overseer for the Shamibelians, and that she had nothing against Hralib whatsoever. Why would she kill him?
Orsatos remembers that Melani swore vengeance upon Hralib when he allowed her mother and father to be sacrificed to Obala after the invasion.
Orsatos saw Empyrean skulking about the Great Library where Hralib often worked at night, burning scrolls to clear the place out for his wife Nobifa. Could he have come upon Hralib and taken him by surprise?
Emma knows how to forge permits. Hralib never tolerated such disobedience in his slaves. If he found out, or Throgana found out and was going to tell him, she'd have had to kill them both to save her own life.
Round One Conceal
Orsatos has been embezzling from Master Hralib, but he's an excellent accountant. There's no way a stupid goat like Hralib would have caught on.
The princes are all leaders of an underground rebellion, and quite astute at the books. One of them realized that Orsatos was embezzling, so he told them that he was stealing funds to give to the resistance. Orsatos hands over a few coins every now and again, but he keeps most of it for himself, to buy his freedom.
Orsatos is a scholar, and hates the idea of scrolls being burned by the Shamibelians. During the Night of Obala's Pride, about 11PM, he snuck off to the Great Library to smuggle a few of the most precious ones to safety while Master Hralib was still at the party.
Orsatos wasn't able to stuff more than a few scrolls into his tunic before he heard someone coming--someone clumsy, like Empyrean. He didn't want to be caught, so he left through the front door. That was when he saw Mes Ladonna.
He had had a bit too much to drink at the Night of Obala's Pride and when he saw Mes Ladonna, he didn't want her to tattle on him, so he let himself be seduced by her. It'd been a long time since he had a woman, and he fell asleep in the bushes afterwards, and slept like the dead.
Then he doesn't know what happened. He was supposed to report for guard duty, but somehow ended up back at Pevifa's house in the wee hours of the morning. He's never blacked out before, and he's worried about what he could have done . . .
Round One Props
- a shovel or a rake
- travel and writing permits
Orsatos Round Two
Round Two Reveal
Orsatos thinks that when someone is murdered, one should look at the wife. Or the wives, in this case. Vitara Pevifa was nagging Hralib to clear the Temple of Zin for her, and make it habitable, because she had chosen it to be her personal swimming pool. And Vitara Nobifa made a very public showing of her upset that she hadn't yet gotten pregnant by Hralib, and she blamed his attentions on Throgana for it. Either one of them could be guilty.
Orsatos knows that when he stumbled back to Pevifa's house to sleep, and tend to the bump on the back of his head at 3:45AM, he was shocked to find the mistress awake, and surly. She gave him some excuse about how she'd had a dream revelation from Obala, and made him leave the house immediately to go spy on Nobifa. But Orsatos strongly suspects that she just wanted him out of the house.
In any case, Orsatos followed a trail of ashes in the snow that led them to Nobifa's house in Kamnestra Hall this morning before the snow melted.
Orsatos knows that he and Perdita both served as Hralib's administrative slaves, and that if someone was forging permits, it was probably her. Hralib would have killed her if he found out, so maybe she killed him first.
Emma is still in contact with her father, Jalil, even though Hralib forbid it. Perhaps Throgana found out and was going to tell, and get Emma in trouble.
Orsatos believes that Ladonna could also be a permit forger. She frequently delivers permits to slaves when she visits their masters to sing songs and entertain.
Orsatos know that Sarina was, up until just yesterday, Hralib's slave and that their relationship was troubled. Throgana convinced Hralib that Sarina was trying to kill him--and that he should sell her to Ruffialo as a gladiatrix--gladiator slaves have short lifespans.
Sarina did not want Hralib to sell her, that she had fallen slightly under his sway, and that she exhibited signs of heartbreak at being sold away like chattle. She may have felt betrayed enough to kill him.
Sarina and Throgana hated one another, and often got into fist fights. It's one of the reasons Sarina was sold--maybe she decided to get even with Throgana for getting rid of her.
Sarina had taken a form of Endab that she learned from the Bonduins and turned it into a new martial arts form with the use of torches. Wasn't Hralib burned on his face and hands?
A few days ago, Mes Ladonna came to Orsatos with a problem. She told him that her friend Gilin had stolen a ring and whenever she wore it, it made her enraged and murderous. Ladonna wanted to know what the ring was. Orsatos took one look at it, and realized it was a Ring of Hate. If either of the women head been wearing it, they'd be in a perfect mood to kill Hralib.
The last thing Orsatos remembers on the Night of Obala's Pride, before he blacked out, was that Ladonna seduced him. Could she have done something to make him pass out so that she could get past him, into the Great Library, to kill Hralib?
Orsatos knows that Hralib asked him to draft up a new Last Will and Testament that disinherited his worthless son Hashi. Unfortunately, he died before Orsatos could finish it.
Round Two Conceal
When Ladonna came to him with the ring, Orsatos told her that he'd hold it for her. Instead, he gave it to Zaridos, hoping that it would cause the idiot prince to do something to get himself killed. Maybe he did!
When Ladonna came to ask Orsatos about Tatomir's Ring, he stole a few of her permits. He suspected they might be forged, and wanted to show them to Hralib. However, when he woke up after being seduced by Ladonna later in the night, the permits were gone.
Wait a minute. Now that Orsatos thinks about it, he remembers that after he had sex with Ladonna, he woke up in the bushes probably 1:30AM. He saw a woman coming out of the Great Library, carrying some armor. He heard her mutter something about making Hralib pay for what he did to her husband. Orsatos was about to accuse her of raiding, when suddenly, she hit him in the head with a pot, and he blacked out.

Round Two Additional Goals
Orsatos Round Three
Round Three Reveal
Orsatos had nothing to gain by killing Hralib; all his plans relied on making the Shamibelians happy with him. While he can still do that, it means currying favor all over again with a new master if he doesn't get killed.
Round Three Conceal
The true name of Hralib's missing son was Lolib, and Hralib wanted him named in his Last Will and Testament, even if he was not found or another five years.
Round Three Props
Round Three Additional Goals
- If no good suspects seem to be forthcoming, Orsatos had better invent some!
- If Orsatos can't get off for the murder, he had better find a way out of the city!
