Pangaros Istabannos
History
Lord Pangaros Istabannos was the notorious Crime Lord of the Old City. Formerly simply known as Pangaros, this Hydra Clan native somehow (no one is sure exactly how) came into possession of several plots of land in the Old City district of Anarinuell early in the city's post-liberation period and has turned it into a formidable base of operations for his alleged criminal enterprises.
In 17 A.U., Pangaros won a Spring Pentathlon, and chose the Marriage Prize. His bride of choice? Lady Ibania Istabannos, daughter of Cockatrice Clan Leader Bannos. This controversial choice -- some say it was a matter of his suffering from the water sickness -- put the city, and Bannos, in an uproar. However, a deal struck with Bannos had Pangaros and Ibania divorcing a few months after the wedding, and Pangaros' water sickness prevented the consummation of the marriage. He retained his noble title and a few plots of Cockatrice land, remaining a member of the Istabannos family.
Pangaros was known for his charming, engaging demeanor. He was quite handsome and, some felt, refined for a crimelord. When roused, he had a thunderous temper; he is also known to have a great intolerance for injustice of all sorts - injustice as he defined it. It is well known that he did not like Old City denizens to call him 'Lord', preferring 'Boss' or simply Pangaros. This privilege did not extend to the disliked "wallers," the Old City name for those who lived within the protective wall of Anarinuell.
Pangaros was one of the biggest legitimate employers in the Old City, as well as acting as a noble sponsor for most of its denizens who needed such. He arbitrated disputes in the Old City, acted as a neutral mediator, and could often be found at the Hall of Masons or the Barnacle Inn, taking care of business or holding court in his own peculiar way.
Pangaros came to what many in the Old City was an untimely end when he was accused of treason and put to death. To this day, some folks in the Old City mutter that he was a convenient scapegoat killed to cover up a waller's misdeeds, but they refuse to talk about it openly.
Overview
Born of the Hydra Clan in Arinzi in 7 B.U. the only son of Gamni and Hanos. He grew up in the strict stoic ways of the Hydra Clan abiding by their rules and laws, and soon joined the Hydra army during the Great War. Having experienced life abroad and disgusted with what he saw as oppression of women within his clan, Pangaros left the Hydra lands and went off to pursue other interests. It wasn't long before his eye was drawn to the old city portion of Anarinuell, and he moved in.
In the years that followed, Pangaros became well known and feared in the Old City and Anarinuell itself. Despite the rumors and speculation as to how his reputation was garnered, Pangaros was a charming, engaging man of many colors who was seemingly friendly to everyone around him. Injustice bothered him greatly, and this was the most frequent reason for his occasional fits of anger.
When the Old City was destroyed during the Air Raids of 24 A.U. Pangaros made plans to move much of the Old City across the river onto his Cockatrice lands and found the Emistor Village, but these plans were interrupted when he was arrested, along with Pandarus and Orthia Parnassis for his alleged participation in the infamous Teddi Dilarik scandal.
He was executed for treason by the Clan Council whose judgement read: "For conspiracy to obstruct justice, in the matter of the kidnapping of a child from a Royal Nursery, Mer Pangaros and Mer Pandarus have been found guilty by unanimous vote, of Treason against the Republic. The sentence is death, to be carried out immediately. In a spirit of mercy to the families of the condemned, their souls will be spared, in the hope that the Gods grant them justice in the afterlife."
Pangaros left behind a wife, Priestess Isa; his longtime companion in the Old City, Moira; and some say, many bastard children scattered around the whole of Anarinuell.
