Official Statement
I'm sure some of you are sniggering behind your tea cups that my husband's body was found on my land this morning. I'm sure some of you are eager to suspect me. I can feel your cold glances. But if I took things laying down, my name would not be Pevifa Tibenya. Therefore, I have already received permission from Priest Tatomir to take official statements from each woman here today about the murder. If nothing else, the book of statements will make a keepsake for my unborn child to explain why it will be born without a father. So you, sister-wife Nobifa--don't be so smug. If his slaves didn't kill him, I'm sure it was you. By the authority of Obala, I demand a statement that includes your name and everything you know about Hralib's demise. Tabitha will write it down.
Background
Pevifa made the trek all the way out to this barbaric Firan city to settle new lands, and her husband Hralib goes and dies on her. This is the thanks she gets? Truly, Anarinuell has brought them nothing but grief. This horrid city with all its walls, is very inconvenient when it comes to building plantations. Moreover, shortly after they arrived here, Pevifa's eldest son by Hralib disappeared. The boy was hardly even a man, and was Hralib's favorite child, as well as her own. Now, not only must she mourn her lost husband and son, but she risks losing her land! By law, if a Shamibelian is murdered on land being cleared for a woman, it is considered haunted and forfeit to the state. Pevifa may be grieving, but she's not going to sit still for that!
Relationships
- Dyanna -- overseer for the slaves working Pevifa's lands, she has a way of ensuring the work ALWAYS gets done.
- Nobifa - Pevifa's sister-wife, she supplanted Pevifa in Hralib's affections. Unforgivable even in death.
- Fara - Pevifa's daughter. Very bad relationship; Pevifa will do almost anything to ensure that Fara stays a slave.
- Tabitha - Pevifa's daughter. Much better relationship, but Pevifa is dismayed by Tabitha's desire to marry Lainath. Will try and steer Tabitha to better prospects.
- Bivin - Pevifa's son. He should get married and move off Tabitha's lands and take his proper place in Shamibelian society.
- Fissia - Pevifa's sister and ally.
- Jalil, Emma, Empyrean, Melani, Rodiste, Brizo, Teonia, Perdita and Orsatos -- Hralib's slaves. A pity that they will be executed at the end of the night, but in any case, they won't be working for Pevifa now. She'll need to find a new husband with new slaves to attend her.
Goals
- Make Tabitha take down an "official" statement from each of the women at the tea house.
- Prove that your rival and 'sister-wife' Nobifa killed Hralib.
- Make your case before Tatomir that the Temple District should not be forfeit to the state, just because Hralib was murdered there.
- Raise suspicion that Hralib might have actually died somewhere else, not your land.
- Make Fara grovel in apology for trying to seduce Hralib away from you
- Ensure that the child you are bearing for Hralib is a boy (either by negotiating to switch babies with Fissia, or with a pregnant slave)
- Get seen by a healer to ensure that your pregnancy is healthy
- Buy some gifts for men you'd like to court you

Pevifa Round One
Round One Reveal
Pevifa's sister-wife Nobifa was insulted when Hralib decided that he would clear the Great Library for her, but he would clear all the Temple District for Pevifa and that Pevifa would have the finest mansions and estates in the realms.
Nobifa must have had a hand in killing Hralib, to clear the way to marry someone else.
Tatomir never wanted Hralib to marry Nobifa. It's possible the High Priest had been working his influence on Hralib and Nobifa knew it and got scared.
Fara was cast into slavery because Pevifa didn't give her land when she came of age. The ungrateful little bitch might have been angry enough to kill Hralib and try framing her mother.
With Hralib dead, Pevifa is about to lose all the slaves that work her estates and bring money in to her coffers. Why would she have wanted to kill him?
Everyone knows that Hralib was a strong warlord. How could a delicate and pregnant woman like Pevifa abduct, drown, or kill him?
Why would Pevifa kill Hralib when she could have simply invited another man to issue a challenge for her, and then chosen something that Hralib was bad at? It's not hard to get rid of a husband you don't like, in Shamibelian culture.
As well as Hralib generally treated Emma, he kept her apart from her father Jalil, and she may have resented it enough to kill him. (Emma was sent to live with Pevifa while Jalil lived in Nobifa's house.)
Emma was seen helping Throgana get ready for the Night of Obala's pride, and painted her nails.
Round One Conceal
Pevifa was livid when Hralib not only married Nobifa but decided to take her to Anarinuell with them. She has always seen herself as the First Lady of Anarinuell, and to have her position usurped by Nobifa was something she never forgave in Hralib.
Now that they've actually been settling in Anarinuell, Pevifa has had to endure the indignity of Hralib taking away time from clearing her lands, to clear out the Great Library for Nobifa. Pevifa was not about to suffer this in silence, so she frequently nagged Hralib to finish clearing out the Temple of Zin to turn into her personal swimming pool and steam house. Nobifa's lands could wait.
Throgana was Hralib's favorite slave, and his devotion to her often earned her the anger of his wives like Pevifa.
Ever since Pevifa got pregnant, she became unreasonably jealous of anyone who paid attention to Hralib. In fact, Pevifa intervened when Emma was dancing with Hralib, and slapped her. But that's to be expected, considering that Emma doesn't yet know her place, and Throgana mostly did.
After slapping Emma on the dance floor, Pevifa and Hralib argued last night. The reason is that Pevifa found out that Hralib was trying to get Fara out of slavery, no doubt so that he could divorce Pevifa and marry her own daughter. Hralib had no sense of propriety or decency when it came to women, and he was not above incest.
The rug Hralib was found wrapped up in was an old Tibenya heirloom that Pevifa brought with her to Anarinuell after the invasion.
In Shamibelian culture, secrets are written down and hidden away. Pevifa knew where Hralib kept his secrets hidden . . .
If Pevifa bears Hralib a boy child, posthumously, that child could inherit all of Hralib's slaves, in which case, Pevifa could have them work her lands without having to remarry. If they aren't all executed tonight, that is . . . and if Hralib's son Hashi doesn't get all the inheritance.
Round One Props
- A pillow to simulate pregnancy
Pevifa Round Two
Round Two Reveal
Hralib never approved of the fact that his son Hashi's main way of making money was renting out his slavegirls at the brothel. Hralib always thought Hashi should do more raiding and land clearing. The tension between father and son could have caused a fatal confrontation.
The ash in Hralib's mouth is very curious. After all, the scrolls in the Great Library were being burned at a great rate to clear the place for Nobifa. That's the only place Pevifa could imagine Hralib picking up such ash. Unless, of course, it was some kind of message from the slaves, to force ashes down Hralib's throat.
Pevifa doesn't trust the slaves one bit, and knows they need to be kept in line. Lainath couldn't control his slave, Akiva -- maybe she was out of control enough to kill Hralib herself.
Lainath, who isn't even a full-blooded Shamibelian, was courting Pevifa's daughter, Tabitha. But Hralib told Tabitha he'd let her marry Lainath over 'my dead body'. Maybe Lainath cleared the way.
Whenever Hralib purchased a night with Yvette, he would make her perform her "special trick" and she would always return in tears, bitter and murderous. She hated Hralib and wished him dead.
Pevifa frequently went to inspect her lands, to make sure they were being cleared properly and to memorize their boundaries. There's certainly nothing incriminating about her being on her own plantation.
Emma was almost undoubtedly pregnant with Hralib's child. She and her father, Jalil, would do anything to get revenge for such a slight.
Pevifa knows that the rug Hralib's body was found wrapped in was stolen during a raid, and she has always suspected that Scithvor Vasaloo is the one who stole it.
Katriana was thrilled to be sold to Forlanis, and eager to get away from Hralib and Throgana, whom she hated. If Forlanis told her to kill them, it would be Katriana's pleasure to do so.
Hralib's missing armor was made by a slave named Savanna. He was very pleased with the armor because he had the wedding necklace of the last Firan he killed, a man named Udettos, melted down and ornamented into the armor. Pevifa thinks Udettos may have been either Savanna or another slaves' husband, and they probably stole the armor back for sentimental reasons. You know how those Firan slaves are about their silly wedding necklaces.
Hralib and Pevifa's missing son favored Aylina as a whore, and some say he was in love with her.
Ladonna has such a gift for writing mean little songs about people that Shamibelian war lords were paying her to write them about their rivals. That's the kind of thing that can sew dissension in the ranks of the Shamibelian army really fast, and Hralib said that he wanted to put a stop to it.
Pevifa remembers that Melani swore vengeance upon Hralib when he allowed her mother and father to be sacrificed to Obala after the invasion.
Orsatos completely blacked out the Night of Obala's Pride. Might it be guilt for killing Hralib, his master?
Round Two Conceal
The real reason Pevifa refused to give land to her daughter Fara and let her fall into slavery is because the girl tried to seduce Hralib.
Pevifa's son Bivin didn't get along with Hralib very well when he lived with Pevifa and was eager to move out right after he passed his Gauntlet.
Hralib was a holder of some of Bivin's secrets. Hralib kept his secrets hidden in a box he buried beneath the Great Marble Arch in the Temple District. Pevifa always worried that Bivin was a bigmouth, gave out too many secrets, and would regret it.
Bivin has been growing red cap juice as a cash crop and selling it to the Free Firan Cities even though it has been outlawed by Tatomir. When Bivin drinks red cap juice he sometimes gets wildly violent.
Hralib suspected Bivin was making red cap juice in violation of Tatomir's dictate, and Bivin's slave Renik followed to see if it would lead him to the goods.
At 12:15AM Pevifa snuck off to the Temple District that Hralib was converting to her new plantation, and she took up a shovel, intending to do something very very wrong.
While she was there, she heard a dog barking and growling. It was likely that awful dog of Fissia and Hashi's named Spike! Is it a coincidence that Hralib's body was found scratched up and without a finger?
Round Two Props
- Box of Secrets
Round Two Additional Goals
- Convince Tatomir that Obala has promised you a boy child and that Hralib's unborn son should inherit all Hralib's slaves
- Failing that, find a new husband with talented slaves. You're not about to spend your golden years unattended and in poverty.
Pevifa Round Three
Round Three Reveal
Nobifa was insulted when Hralib decided that he would clear the Great Library for her, but he would clear all the Temple District for Pevifa and that Pevifa would have the finest mansions and estates in the realms.
Nobifa once suggested poisoning the pool in Zin's temple in case the Firans tried to worship there again.
Pevifa knows that Hralib and Tatomir had recently patched up their differences and that Tatomir had even gone to Hralib for advice on occasion--like he did when he was considering cancelling the Night of Obala's Pride because of some late march frost. So Tatomir probably didn't kill Hralib.
Jalil vehemently objected to the mentoring role that Throgana took in teaching his daughter Emma to be a good slave.
Caree trades slaves for spices, and sometimes brings unusual Caldera City spices to the Shamibelians in Anarinuell. Maybe one of those 'special spices' ended up in Hralib's stew?
Round Three Conceal
Pevifa knows that she wasn't laying in wait to kill Hralib with a shovel. She was at the Marble Arch to dig up his box of secrets so that she could get power over him.
