Get a MUD Client

Firan is not a game you can play on the web. You need a special application, called a mud client (or sometimes "mush client") to connect. Just about every computer has a very simple program called telnet on it, but it sucks. You'll have a better time if you download SimpleMU (for Windows) or Atlantis (for Mac) or TinyFugue (for Linux) or something like those!

Connect to FiranMUX

Once you have your MUD Client, connect to firan.legendary.org port 5000 and you will see the welcome screen (something like this):

If, for some reason, you don't have DNS set up properly on your computer, you might need to use the numeric IP address instead of firan.legendary.org. FiranMUX's IP address is 69.93.21.154 port 5000.

Connect as a Guest

Once you see that screen, connect as a guest. Type connect guest guest and hit Enter. This will log you in to one of the several "guest" accounts. Your "name" will be Guest1 or Guest2 or something like that.

You are likely to be greeted enthusiastically by players and staff ready to help you choose a character off the roster! The more experienced staff helpers have become quite adept at matching up new players' personalities with characters on the roster, and can offer suggestions.

Existing players will greet you on the [Guest] channel. To talk to those people, type "g" followed by what you want to say. For example:

g Hey guys! How do I get a character?

You'll see something like:

[Guest] Guest1 says "Hey guys! How do I get a character?"

and then someone helpful will answer you.

Get a Character

You can't actually play the game using the guest character. You'll need a real character. The quickest way to start playing is to choose one of the pregenerated characters off our Roster.

Use the @roster command to look over our Roster of pregenned characters. @roster/next will take you to the next page. If you have a general idea of what type of character you would like to play, you can use the @roster/filter command to narrow down the choices to, say, an older male in the Gold Dragon clan who works as a carpenter. Or you may have a friend on FiranMUX who has mentioned a certain family is really fun to play, so you can narrow down the search to anyone with that family's last name. Just type help @roster/filter while logged into the MUX for further information.

Because of the complex nature of the game, it is generally recommended that a new player start off with a level-II (companion) or level-III (citizen) character that doesn't require you to write an application. This will give you time to explore the game and its commands. Later on, there are ways to choose a new character to play. To find the non-application, II and III characters, enter @roster/filter newbie then type @roster/filter show to list them. There are a bazillion @roster commands to read different parts of a character sheet, but start with @roster 'charactername' for the basics.

Once you find a character you want to play, choose it. Type @roster/choose 'charactername' and the game will ask you for your email address and stuff. If you chose a character that requires an application, it will ask you to answer some questions about why you want to play the character, then the staff will have to read and approve the application (within 48 hours, usually much shorter -- like, a few hours). If you didn't choose a character that needed an app, we'll just email you the password to the character.

Check your email for some messages from firan@legendary.org. Sometimes messages end up in your Junk Mail or Bulk Mail folder, so check there if they don't show up. One message will contain information about the game and the other will contain your password and instructions for connecting.

Play Your Character

Once you have your password, reconnect to FiranMUX and type connect ''charactername password' at the front screen. Replace charactername with your character's name. Replace password with your password. You can change your password to something you'll remember better using the @password command (@password 'oldpassword newpassword') on the game.

Be sure to read all the parts of your @sheet. Read some of the news files whenever something doesn't make sense. If you need more help, don't be shy! Ask on the [Help] channel. You can type h followed by a question and our staff will see it on the [Help] channel and come to your rescue. We love to help people!

And now... Let the games begin!
