Fidelia clears her throat. "I will begin to make a short statement of how this trial will work," she says, voice soft but clear. "First the prosecution will have a chance to present their case. The defense will, if they wish, be able to challenge any assertions they make. We will reconvene another night for the defense to make their case, and the prosecution may challenge. Then, on a third night, both sides will have a brief chance for any final words, and the religious council will decide. The verdict will be delivered _as a council_. This was decided before the trial was even scheduled. Each temple will have a vote, as we vote in council meetings. My only vote is to break ties. It is not my verdict to make, and never has been."

Taleena leans over to the table of Uf to whisper a few words to Iona, giving her as much an encouraging smile as possible.

Iona nods solemnly but with fearful eyes. She steels herself as she gives Taleena a final nod.

Lucas sits down at Elik Table.

Sadin clears his throat again, standing to his full height, and begins to speak in a booming baritone. "High Priestess Fidelia, before the prosecution begins, I would like to thank you for a number of things. First, I would like to thank you for inviting me to Anarinuell, securing my presence here by your oath, to which you have been good. I know it cost you personally and professionally to do so, and I am grateful for the opportunity that will be afforded to tell my story here. Second, I would like to thank you, on behalf of my grandparents for being a good steward of the Bear Clan--insofar as our interests are not the same, indeed, and even insofar as I blame you and your family for some of my troubles here today, I believe that in all circumstances you behave in what you believe is the best interest of the Bear Clan, and as one to whom the entire Republic and all her clans were once entrusted, I am grateful for your good stewardship. And third, though a great deal of dirty laundry may be aired here that may be painful to you, a great deal of our past which is painful to me, I thank you for what is in our past that is pleasant to me to remember." *Firan*

Passonia has arrived.

Fidelia seems to have more to say, but pauses to listen to Sadin, her face completely impassive. "You are welcome, your highness," she says simply, voice perfectly calm. She continues, "My statement made in regards to running the trial, a few statements in regards to the conduct of the audience. The Religious Council reserves the right to impose fines for speaking out of turn. Likewise we ask that the audience have the same regard they have for a Clan Council meeting and not send messages during the proceedings. Furthermore, we remind you that this is a sacred building, and there should be no violence or any sort. The gods are watching." *Firan*

Galinos' eyes rest on Fidelia a moment as she says godS.

Sadin nods to Fidelia, and retakes his seat. "Yes, indeed." He puts one hand on Lucretia's and the other on Cecilia's. Ah, the picture of a happy little family. *Firan*

Cecilia smiles, but it is a strange smile, she still looks borderline ready to stab someone. Happy little family!

Kael has arrived.

Aeryk seems to be watching Cecilia very carefully.

Rikon is as well, strangely.

Octavian isn't. He might have glared at her a time or two, but he's totally beyond that now. Instead, he's waiting for the dirty laundry to air.

Iona lets out a deep breath as she looks up to the Religious Council. There's a strange peace that's settled about the Uffian, reflected in her eyes and face. Lucretia smiles as well looking up suddenly at the gesture.

Zutrik is apparently just letting everything flow over him at the moment. Instead, he's waiting to see what the prosecution, whomever it may be, will come up with. He remains looking confident.

Fidelia clears her throat. "And my very last statement before we move to prayer and the prosecution. This is, I think, a statement I should not have to make. Someone has decided to question my integrity as High Priestess of the Realms. I should not have to say this, but I must--as High Priestess, I am not just an adminstrator. I am the mediator between the gods and the Firans. If I fail in my religious duties, I answer to the heavens, and thus I take them very seriously indeed. I trust to the gods, and I trust to the priests, who have been through war and trial, and proven themselves honest and devout, sincere in their convictions. And I ask of them now, those who sit at this table, whether any have any doubt in my presiding over this trial." She glances over to those sitting with her. *Firan*

The Gold Dragons, always ready and willing to take advantage of a situation to make the Religious Council look bad in comparison to the True Temple, is out in force at Prince Sadin's trial today. They would likely be causing more trouble, but High Priestess Fidelia's calm demeanor intimidates them in combination with the staff, even if she is a pagan holding a staff she shouldn't have.

Alexa states evenly, "Srenna's high priestess has no doubts about the High Priestess of the Realms." *Firan*

Taleena gives a small shake of her head. "I have no doubt in your abilities, High Priestess." This she addressess to Fidelia. *Firan*

Marsalos asks something in a low voice at the table and then sits back again. He shakes his head, spreading his hands. "No doubts here." *Firan*

Soliana shakes her head no, in response to Fidelia's question. "The Solian temple has no doubts either," she adds softly. *Firan*

Parosh just shakes his head in response. Unotians are traditionally quiet, anyway.

Zellonos murmurs something back to Marsalos, and then straightens up. "I, and the Eeshan temple, have full faith in Her Honor the High Priestess." *Firan*

Tarquin has arrived.

Nimizo shakes his head slightly at Fidelia. No objections from the Kamnestrans.

Alessandro has arrived.

Karana shakes her head. :No doubts." *Firan*

Fidelia waits as the priests speaks, her head bent in almost an humble air, unusual for an Ista Aldrik. She lowers her head a little further, murmurs, "Thank you," and retakes her seat. She taps her staff, and says, "Let us pray for justice and wisdom, and then Priestess Iona may begin her case." *Firan* Fidelia closes her eyes for a minute as if in prayer.

Iona's eyes close too as she's mentioned by name. She prays. Fervantly.

Archon has arrived.

Kagi has arrived.

Archon swaggers in and pauses at the door briefly. He's late but so what. He's there. His cloak billows about him as he bypasses any religious tables and moves toward the general benches, taking a seat at the vrey end. His expression is as intense as his stench, though he doesn't seem to notice his stench.

Iona opens her hazel eyes and stands. She's a tiny figure of a woman who moves before the Council table with an ancient buzzard perched on her arm. She bows deeply to the Council table and then to Sadin and his company. Her head held high, grey-brown curls pinned back from her innocent face, she nods to Fidelia. Kagi sits down at General Audience Benches.

Fidelia inclines her head to Iona to prompt her, and settles in to listen, face expressionless, head high, back straight.

Marsalos turns his attention to Iona as well. He looks pretty darn relaxed, minus a martini.

Nimizo lifts his head to regard the Uffian priestess, his golden eyes weighing heavily on her as the Kamnestran waits to hear the case.

Taleena turns her head to the Priestess of Uf, once more giving her a steadying, encouraging look.

Hattie has arrived.

Zellonos straightens his posture, moving bolt upright as his eyes train carefully on Iona.

Hufimo has arrived.

Iona: "Your Honors, Mothers and Fathers, Highnesses-- I am no lawyer, but I am a faithful servant of the Gods. I have served in the temples for over twenty-five years. Clan Leaders and nobles alike have asked me for my wisdom, as has the other members of the Triumverate in their day." Sister Iona bows her head politely to Sadin at that. "So I speak with the authority of one who knows the Gods, knows their ways, and knows their signs. And I can say that the gods have clearly shown us that both His Highness and his Lady Wife have been married -in Their eyes- to other people. By claiming that their marriage was the 'one and only' they insult both the laws of Gods and Men."

"Eesha shows her displeasure when the Marriage prize is abused. This we know. When marriages are made that displease the Gods, we know. We have seen and felt their wrath on multiple occasions when matches are made that violate the laws of the Gods. Had someone who was already married been chosen as a marriage prize, Eesha would have shown displeasure. Yet Lady Yasha Rissik-Iberik claimed His Highness with her Festival Prize. And they were married to one another. He didn't protest. He didn't seek to make the cause right by announcing he was already married Ö he accepted the marriage as per the laws of the Marriage Prize. If you were married already, would you risk Eesha's wrath and the ire of the Gods by getting married again? No. His Highness has served in the temples, and is himself related to a God. He wouldn't want to anger them with his actions. So clearly, he was not married to Lady Lucretia when Lady Yasha wed him with her prize."
"Had Lady Lucretia been married to His Highness all these years, would Zin have blessed the union of herself and His Honor Nydiam? We all know the story between the two - how their love was broken when their marriage was first annulled. How he won back her heart. How he dueled for the right to marry her. How the Kraken, favored beast of Zin, blessed and caressed them." The priestess shudders at the mention of the Kraken as if recalling some memory and moves on. "Zin himself clearly showed his favor that one of his favored sons, Nydiam the Lightning Lord, was married to Lady Lucretia. Would a God have smiled on their union had it been false? If she was married all along to Prince Sadin? No."
"Nydiam's final sacrifice was a testament to his love for Lady Lucretia. When she wasÖ Forgive me my ladyÖ abused and put to torment at the hands of the enemy --- where was Prince Sadin? Who was it who came to Ellish and fought for her? Comforted her? Who laid down his LIFE for her and extracted his vengeance in Shamibelian blood? Not His Highness Sadin. His Honor Nydiam. To say that he never married Lady Lucretia, that he never loved her and honored her as he swore in his vowsÖ to say this is to insult a great hero and all of his bloodline."
"My lords and ladies, Mothers, Fathers, brothers and sistersÖ The Gods have shown us that the marriages held to other people were valid, righteous and sanctioned by their actions. His Highness insults the gods by claiming theses other marriages never counted. He insults the memory of good Firans by claiming these other marriages never counted. I ask that the council take my argument in their wisdom and decide on the rightfulness of the matter."

Hattie sits down at Zutiv Table.

Iona gives her arguments in a clear rational voice, gesturing on occasion with her free hand. The small woman's baleful bird continues its deathly glare as it looks about the Temple. Her words finished, she bows once more and stands to one side.

Hattie makes her way into the temple and sits with the other Hydra clan members to silently listen.

Archon's dark gaze flickers over Iona as she speaks, a brow lifting as the buzzard looks his way. He stares it down and smiles evily. 'Lunch'.. Mouthing the single word with a sneer.

Lucretia raises her hand clearly having no idea how courts work.

Sadin listens to Iona's screed patiently, his mouth tightening at the corners several times as if he wanted to reply, but stops short out of respect for the council. Until she gets to the part about 'Where was Prince Sadin?' His face reddens, his eyes glow bright, and he thumps his hand on the table. "WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW WHERE I WAS?" *Firan*

Once more, Taleena gives Iona an encouraging look, though this one more shrewdly calm. She lets her Priestess to continue handling the situation.

Zutrik stands and walks back towards the Elik table, speaking quietly. Alexa rests her chin in her palm and regards Sadin with a deceptively mild blandness.

There are some mutterings at the council table, and Fidelia says mildly, "Would you like to tell us where you were, your highness?"

Kael was staring at Iona's buzzard, but he is startled from his queer ponderance by Sadin's fist on the table.

Kagi bobs his head, since the question was asked, but then he sits back a bit so he's not so obvious on the benches.

Lucretia says "The defense would like to make a correction. Lord Nydiam did not make it to Ellish in time to deal with my capture by Shamibelians. The man who carried his father's name to ensure my safety was Prince Argin Elianik. This is not to say that Lord Nydiam's sacrifice was in vain or that was any less purposeful. I just felt that the details should be kept very clear in that regard. Prince Argin carries his father's eyes and name and as such I cannot say that there was not his presence on that field." *Firan*

Lucretia smiles seeming to think that since she raised her hand it's all okay.

Iona manages, somehow, to retain her solemn composure in the face of Sadin's anger. She's unsure how this all works and glances at the high table for reaction. But Fidelia to the rescue. She doesn't reply to Lucretia either but nods at her slight correction.

Sadin's is visibly angry, but his attorney, Lord Zutrik, is apparently telling him to shut up, which is something the Prince doesn't take very well. He clears his throat, and nods to Fidelia. "I would. But my attorney tells me now is not the proper time, and of course, my wife has her hand raised..." *Firan*

Lucretia looks pleased that Sadin mentioned her and leans over to whisper to Cecilia, "See, I'm very good at this court thing. I was a judge once for a trial that's how I know." A firm nod as Lucretia pulls out a handkerchief and dabs her eyes seemingly overwhelmed. *Firan*

Cecilia gives her mother a fond little pat on the shoulder.

Alexa covers her eyes and mutters something to herself under her breath, as if chastizing herself about something.

Alessandro frowns deeply as Iona speaks, and shakes his head as well, leaning over to whisper to his son, motioning towards her with a disapproving gaze.

Octavian glowers at Cecilia.

Cecilia smiles at Octavian!

"By all means do as you will, your highness," Fidelia says politely, then inclining her head politely to Lucretia. She looks back to Iona.

Iona nods to Lucretia. "Thank you for your corrections, my lady. I didn't say he came to rescue you, but that he did come to defend your honor and fight in your name. But your point is very valid." She curtsies again and then looks over to Prince Sadin. "Your Highness, why did you allow Lady Yasha to select you with her marriage prize, gifted by Eesha's virtue, if you claim you were still married to Lady Lucretia then? Why did you bear a child by Lady Yasha if you were not legally wed to her, by your own claim? Isn't that adultery?" She lifts her hand to her shoulder and lets the buzzard ride there. The small woman shakes out her hand to balance out the missing weight. *Firan*

Lucretia raises her hand again, "The defense objects to the lack of discretion towards monotheists in this trial. She requests that per her faith Zutiv also be referred to." She beams again and lowers her hand. *Firan*

Lucretia seems to be talking a mile a minute at their table. She seems very happy all things considered or perhaps over stimulated is a better term.

Zutrik stands quietly and says, "The issue at hand is the marriage itself, between Prince Sadin and Princess Lucretia. Any fallout involving anything else should be dealt with after that. The defense asks this: Can it be proven that Prince Sadin and Princess Lucretia were divorced?" *Firan*

Sadin and Lucretia appear to be arguing at their table. And you claim they aren't married?

Lucretia waves a dog in the air - it gives the crowd a "help me" look. *Firan*

Passonia drops the ferret.

Iona says "My proof of that is simple. If they had remained married, the Gods would not have permitted them to marry others... in marriages that were obviously approved of on a Divine level. Especially in the case of His Honor Nydiam and Lady Lucretia." *Firan*

Sadin says "And I would submit, Mes Iona that you don't know the gods as well as I do--not being a direct descendant of them as I am." *Firan*

Zutrik remains standing and says, "Indeed. However, I have not seen Prince Sadin's father have any issues with his son's claims. Nor have I seen Lord Zutiv's Eeshan aspect show any sign of displeasure. After all, we cannot say to know the mind of Zutiv, now can we?" *Firan*

Alexa narrows her eyes at Sadin and bites her lip hard.

Taleena looks over at Zutrik, "I disagree, counsellor. I believe Lady Yasha's marriage to Prince Sadin is very much in question here as well. His supposedly being married to Lady Lucretia invalidates the legitimacy of one of the Chimeran princesses of the realm, Princess Nalene, should his marriage to Lady Lucretia be in tact, and as well - violates the tenants of marriage and the marriage prize, something that many have been punished over in the past, not withstanding, more recently, Lady Lucia. The validity of their marriage affects many other things. And, we wish to understand, as his peers, his decisions, so we can better make our own decision upon the matter." *Firan*

Nimizo sits up a bit straighter regarding Sadin at his 'response', his gold eyes flashing with clear disapproaval.

Lucretia nods her head, "Lord Zutiv does get mighty upset. Remember that time when he zapped that one house. It caught on fire and there were sparks and it was all black and icky and who would want to live there after that. No one. That's who." *Firan*

Alessandro lets out a slight 'Here here'ish kind of noise escape from his mouth quietly as Zutrik speaks. About time someone said what he was thinking! Parosh murmurs a rather quiet "bravo" over towards Taleena. *Firan*

Sadin stands up, now having apparently gained his bearings and ready to answer Iona's question. "I allowed Lady Yasha to choose me as a marriage prize because to reveal the impediment would have put my children's lives in danger; what you should be asking yourselves is why the Ista Aldriks allowed it, and I will tell you why. Because they hate Lady Yasha and they could think of no better way to revenge themselves upon her than to have her go through a false marriage to me, after having deprived then-Lady-Fidelia of her beloved Sabinus, it was time to return the favor. When I chastised you just now and said that you didn't know or understand the gods as well as I do, I was not saying it as an idle insult, but rather to explain that your question flows from several false premises, including that the Gods have not been so thoroughly disgusted by the use of the marriage prize that they care at all anymore how it is used. They hold the true love and motives of protecting one's family above the pettier social laws of the Republic, and I have suffered no punishment at their hands for my actions. *Firan*

Jalil has arrived.

Zutrik nods towards the Council, and says, "Be that as it may, the issue that must be decided first is this: Is the marriage between Prince Sadin and Princess Lucretia valid? If so, then we can decide the legitimacy of the children. If not, then it is a moot point. I will have much more to say on this, of course, during my presentation." *Firan*

Lucretia turns in her seat and waves enthusiastically to Jalil after a moment of noticing him and all his guards. She smiles fondly before turning back around.

Sadin adds, "Also, I would add that if this Religious Council is interested in prosecuting the sexual misconduct of Elianik Princes that the line will be very long indeed of people needing to be scolded..." *Firan*

Nimizo looks over Sadin for a long moment before the Kamnestran High Priest asks, "Are you insinuating, your highness, that the Ista Aldriks were aware of your marriage to Lady Lucretia?" *Firan*

Fidelia squints at Sadin.

Iona seemed to be expecting Sadin's rebuttal based on his parentage. She just nods to it, wearing her odd smile, and takes it not as an insult. She looks to the high table and asks, meekly, "May I be excused? I've said all I can and I'm no lawyer. My argument is valid regardless of His Highness' questioning of my religious interpretations." *Firan*

Marsalos raises an eyebrow. Very slowly.

Taleena cants her head at Zutrik. "You are under the false impression that you are running this trial, counsellor. I will remind you that you are the attourney for the defense, and it is the priests on this council who shall decide what must be decided first, or second or any other time. Your job is to defend the Prince support and submit his case, not to patter about with rules mongering with those presiding over it. Do you have valid challenges to make against the prosecution?" *Firan*

Alexa studies Sadin intently and says, "Your highness, I do not care what the Ista Aldriks wanted or thought. You knowingly entered into a marriage supposedly under false pretenses. You were the one who could have made things right. I want to know why you felt that revealing that you were still married would endanger your children?" *Firan*

Sadin nods to Nimizo. "Yes, that is exactly what I am insinuating. The Ista Aldriks have done nothing but try to destroy my marriage since the day it happened stooping to means no less foul than _hiring a prostitute_ to impersonate my wife. Now, I grant that Queen Sabine must have thought we were divorced for a time when Lucretia was banished, but when I recalled Lucretia at the first opportunity and made it clear she was still and always would be my wife, they took note, and it is my belief they have always known." *Firan*

Jalil inclines his head towards Lucretia with a familial smile and settles into his seat.

Zellonos' expression is hard, mired in deeply serious concentration as his attention flits from Lucretia to Sadin to Zutrik to Iona to Taleena to... it goes on. Once or twice, he looks ready to speak up, but stops himself, settling back into his seat.

Zutrik shrugs, "Only that there has been no proof offered that the divorce happened, which is, in fact the main point. If we wish to ask Prince Sadin his reasons for the other /false/ marriages, why then, that's another story entirely. However to claim that they were obviously divorced because Zutiv hasn't shown his displeasure works both ways." *Firan*

Taleena turns then to regard Sadin. "Can you present us with your original wedding necklaces from the time that you were married to Lady Lucretia? The ones that you used to walk the maze?" *Firan*

Rayna has arrived.

Iona's bird is Lawya. She, on the other hand, is not one.

Sadin stares at Alexa. "The Ticanee know perfectly well why my children have been endangered since the Alliance War and beyond." *Firan*

Alexa waves a hand. "Enlighten the rest of the people here. There are many too young to remember." *Firan*

Sadin clears his throat, nodding briefly to Zutrik, then saying, "Lady Proxy Taleena, I do have the necklaces from the time that I was first married to Lady Lucretia, but I will not produce them, because I have learned from bitter experience that this Clan Council will simply confiscate them and burn them as they see fit. See: Marriage of Sadin and Bashona." *Firan*

Fidelia arches one eyebrow. Then the other. She folds her hands in front of her, and keeps her gaze steady on Sadin's face. Her gaze is absolutely unwavering, a level gaze of dark ice.

Fidelia adds, "A marriage that you contracted falsely by your own admission." *Firan*

Iona's no longer in the spotlight. The priestess sits back at the table with the other Uffians and then does her best to fade back into obscurity. An impressive feat for a woman carrying a buzzard- but she's practiced in it.

"If they cannot be produced, then I cannot see how we can validate your marriage. So therefore, I feel it is safe to assume that you do not, in fact, own them. If that is your only defense, it is a poor defense in the least." Taleena retorts, but very calmly and without any malcontent in her voice. "There is no proof the marriage exists."

Nimizo looks down the table at Fidelia and back to Sadin and leans back slowly, his hand reaching up towards the Kamnestran medallion again. "Prince Sadin, my I be clear in understanding that you're admitting publically as a Prince of the Republic to being knowingly and willfully complacent in a charade that defies the gods own laws, the laws of the festival and all social and religious convention?" *Firan*

Sadin starts to laugh. But it's a bitter laugh. "That this council, this same council, after having declared an innocent boy a bastard because his mother's first husband turned out not to be dead. . . ha ha ha. . . that this council, whose noble members probably cannot count their own marriages upon one hand . . . who sit up there in sanctimonious judgment having made a MOCKERY of marriage over the years is quibbling with me about who my wife is and who my children are. . . that is the real amusement to me. A bitter amusement. Pardon me if somehow in the course of Firan history, watching the despicable conduct of the nobles around me, having been used as a pawn in marriage myself, I would have not taken the _institution_ very seriously anymore." *Firan*

Lucretia smiles randomly. Such a pleasant smile full of such joy.

Jalil finds this all very amusing, wondering quietly to himself if Sadin finally grew a pair or borrowed them from Lucretia.

Fidelia is still regarding Sadin with that level dark gaze, icy and penetrating. She arches an eyebrow again.

Alexa points out rather ascerbicly, "I am not noble, your highness. And you have not answered my question." *Firan*

Fidelia inquires in a solicitious tone, "Are you feeling quite all right, your highness? Do you need some air? A glass of wine perhaps?" *Firan*

Karana clears her throat a little bit. "Your Highness, would you trust one or two of this Council alone to show the necklaces to? Visual confirmation will do a great deal. I suggest two or three, who have no direct ties to the Clan Council as well, so you do not have to fear confiscation at this time. I can assure that that will help your case more than angry outbursts. We understand this is a stressful time, though a compromise must be made." *Firan*

Sadin says "So, as a Prince of this realm, I tell you this. I married Lucretia. She is my wife. Her children are my children. I made that covenant with due seriousness of my heart and between me and my god, my father Elik, who, by the way, married my mother--also not according to the laws of this council. Oh yes, my mother was dragged before this council too until it was realized that Elik does not consider himself bound by the _charade_ that is political marriage. I mean, I ask you, what kind of Religious Council is it that gets a case of the vapors over this while condoning for years the scandalous arrangement of the Ticanee Clan Leader and her two husbands? Does anyone here question what false pretenses the Viceroy wed Lady Petrina? Pardon me, but I don't consider it a very serious crime to engage in a charade for the survival of my family. And I doubt the people consider it a crime either, for I am surely not the only guilty one." *Firan*

Zellonos pipes in at that point. "With all due respect, Your Highness, I did not sit on any of those councils. Or any council, for that matter. And I am interested in the truth. Assertions hold no bearing in your defense unless you can prevent evidence to counter the claims of the prosecution. As defense, you bear the burden of proving your innocence." So says the lawyer. *Firan* Octavian opens his mouth, closes it, and turns red under his freckles at that one.

Sadin snorts at Zellonos. "Is that so? Who are you?" *Firan*

Lucretia suddenly looks somber, "That I have lived to this age is a testament of the love that is there for me." She glances around the room, "Truth? Are we going to put everyone else on trial?" She flickers a glance around the room, "I don't see truth here. I would like permission to speak on my behalf." *Firan*
