Official Statement

My name is Rodiste, and it's true I didn't appreciate being bred out like a stud horse, but my lot was easy compared to Melani's. She was such a hard slave to break that Master Hralib had to sell her husband, Torianos, to see if that would keep her from creating mischief, and I overheard her say that she'd see our master dead for it.

Background

Once a proud Hydran lord, after the Fall Rodiste has become nothing more than a stud horse, bred at Hralib's suggestion to none other than Anorna to create docile slave babies. Who knows what rage simmers beneath his surface?

Of late, Rodiste has been unable to sleep with the thought that he still lives, while the goats have turned both of his brothers' widows into brothel slaves. There has to be some justice for that.

Relationships

  • Aylina -- slave, carrying on an affair with Rodiste.
  • Anorna -- a slave and former Hydran commoner, Rodiste has been being bred to her.
  • Ruffialo -- Anorna's Shamibelian master.
  • Teonia -- Rodiste was forced to publicly mate with her, begetting a baby boy - Rodiste's only living child, whom he would do anything to protect.
  • Osirus -- Rodiste's brother, now a gladiator slave.
  • Yvette -- Rodiste's sister-in-law and Razesh's widow.
  • Puria -- Rodiste's sister-in-law and Firistan's widow.
  • Jalil, Melani, Empyrean, Emma, Perdita, Brizo, Orsatos -- Hralib's other slaves, all slated to die tonight if his killer isn't found.
  • Hralib -- Rodiste's dead master. If his killer isn't found, Rodiste and all his fellow slaves will be executed by the end of the night.

Goals

  1. Rodiste should prove that someone else (preferably not one of his fellow slaves) killed Hralib
  2. Rodiste should find out if the Firans are planning a rebellion
  3. Rodiste should make sure that if there is a rebellion, he is included in on it.
  4. Rodiste should find a way to smuggle his son out of Anarinuell before tonight, when he may be executed.
  5. Rodiste should find a way to sneak and spend time with Teonia and his baby.
  6. Rodiste should try to get some "alone time" with Aylina.

Rodiste Round One

Round One Reveal

Rodiste resisted being a good slave for a long time, but recently he has been so trustworthy he was even given the honor of guarding the catacombs for Hralib.

Hralib assigned Jalil to guard the catacombs the morning after Fidelia was sacrificed, because he said he knew Jalil would not want to see his old enemy given proper funeral rites. This made the other slaves look at Jalil darkly, and he may have wanted revenge for hurting his standing with them.

Orsatos, as much of a Shamibelian lover as he is, was also a scholar and hated the idea that Hralib was burning all the scrolls in the Great Library. He might have killed him to save these works of antiquity from destruction as only a scholar would kill for books.

But then again, everyone knows that Orsatos had come into a position of trust and authority under Hralib--why would he kill him and ruin a good thing?

Dyanna was asking lots of questions about the various Temples in the Temple District and whether it was colder in Zin's Temple or the Resting Room in Unot's Temple.

Rodiste caught Dyanna snooping about the Temple District while it was being cleared out for Pevifa's things. What was that about? Reconnoitering a place to ambush and kill Hralib?

Round One Conceal

Rodiste believes that Aylina is in love with him, since she frequently likes to "do him" at the catacombs. Afterwards, he always sleeps very deeply.

Rodiste knows that he always sleeps really well after he and Aylina do it in the catacombs, and he worries that one day, one of the Firans is going to steal a corpse, and he'll be blamed.

Rodiste always resented Hralib for offering his stud services to Ruffialo so that the other Shamibelian could breed him to Anorna and create some nice docile Hydran slave babies.

Hralib broke Rodiste's Hydran pride by forcing him to mate, publicly, with Teonia--and afterwards Prince Savaren told Rodiste that if was any kind of real man, he'd have forced Hralib to kill him before defiling a Firan princess in such a way. But once Rodiste saw the baby that Teonia gave him, he fell in love with it, and now he's grateful. At least he has a child again, and he'd do anything for it.

When Hralib wanted to keep Rodiste in line, he would simply threaten to kill the infant child that he begat upon Teonia. Since he lost his own children in the war and harbors deep guilt over it, he is very protective of this one little boy, which was born into slavery.

Rodiste was desperate to smuggle his infant son out of Anarinuell, and contacted Brizo for help. Rodiste has heard that the old Kamnestran Priest is running an "underground railroad" for children.

Rodiste was a very rebellious slave when he was first captured, but Hralib's power over his young son has forced him finally to obedience. He hasn't dared rebel before now, but he still resents Hralib and all Shamibelians deeply and would gladly betray them all if he could do so without risking his son.

Once Rodiste's son is safely away, the Shamibelians won't have anything to threaten him with anymore, and Rodiste can start trying to atone for his failures in being taken a slave while his brothers were killed and his inability to protect his sisters-in-law. Rodiste thinks someone must be planning to rebel, and whoever it is, he wants to be involved. He needs to redeem his name somehow.

Rodiste has a slash mark on his face from Czar's whip. Last night, Rodiste was supposed to be guarding the catacombs, but Czar caught him sleeping on the job again, and whipped him.

Frankly, Rodiste has large fuzzy black spots in his memory about what happened last night. What if he murdered Hralib and can't remember?

Rodiste saw Throgana in the slave temple this morning, long before Father Brizo found her dead.

Round One Props

  • Face bandage for a slashed cheek (wear it)
  • shovel or a rake
  • A weapon for guarding
  • Weapon and Travel Permits

Rodiste Round Two

Round Two Reveal

Zaridos was in the Slave Temple early that morning, before Throgana's dead body was found there.

Pevifa was nagging Hralib to clear the Temple of Zin for her, and make it habitable, because she had chosen it to be her personal bath house.

Nobifa made a very public showing of being upset that she hadn't yet gotten pregnant by Hralib, and she blamed his attentions on Throgana for it.

Aylina has been known to put a potion or two, or a special herb, into her cooking.

Aylina's a frail Firan noblewoman--she couldn't take down a Shamibelian unless he was still a boy. There's no way she could have killed Hralib on her own.

Yvette was trying to smuggle her two children out of Anarinuell, but they were killed in the attempt and she became murderously unhinged.

Sarina was, up until just yesterday, Hralib's slave, and their relationship was troubled.

Sarina did not want Hralib to sell her. She had fallen slightly under his sway, and she exhibited signs of heartbreak at being sold away like chattel. She may have felt betrayed enough to kill him.

Sarina and Throgana hated one another, and often got into fist fights. It's one of the reasons Sarina was sold--maybe she decided to get even with Throgana for getting rid of her.

Sarina had taken a form of Endab that she learned from the Bonduins and turned it into a new martial arts form with the use of torches. Wasn't Hralib burned on his face and hands?

Emma is so good at her beautician work that she was close to being able to buy her freedom. Maybe she was afraid that Hralib wouldn't let her go, so she killed him.

Rodiste doesn't remember much of the Night of Obala's Pride, but he has a fuzzy memory of seeing Tabitha and Lainath around midnight for some private time--forbidden by Shamibelian custom! Could it have been a dream, or were they plotting Hralib's death so they could run off and marry?

Throgana told Teonia she ought to thank Hralib for being kind enough to mate her to at least a nobleman like Rodiste, instead of whining and carrying on about how she was publicly humiliated and bred to another man, not her husband.

Anorna always resented Hralib for making the suggestion that he breed her with Rodiste, to get nice docile Hydran slave babies when she really wanted to bear children for her master, but would she have killed Hralib over it?

Tatomir has been experimenting with his new powers to re-animate the dead.

Round Two Conceal

Rodiste was technically on duty at the catacombs last night, but kind of wandered off to be with Aylina. Come on, it's not reasonable to ask a man to guard dead people instead of bedding a willing lass. Afterwards, he had to catch a nap.

Yvette was trying to smuggle her two children out of Anarinuell, and father Brizo was going to help her.

Brizo was worried that Hralib was on to his 'children's underground railroad scheme' but decided to smuggle Yvette's children out anyway to make sure that his contact at the border wasn't really working with the Shamibelians.

Yvette's children died last night in the attempt to smuggle them out, and she's become murderously unhinged. She sent for Rodiste with the sad news last night, and he, in turn, sent a messenger to Osirus telling him what had happened. When he saw her, she had blood all over her hands, and kept crying 'I killed a man' -- Rodiste just hopes she didn't murder Hralib because of this.

Rodiste went to the Slave Temple this morning to meet with Father Brizo, but Brizo was late. Instead, Rodiste saw Throgana there, laying on the floor, already dead. A man was over her, trying to yank something off of her neck. When the man heard Rodiste coming, he ran out.

Rodiste then ran over to Throgana and yanked the Ranivor's medallion off of her neck. It caught on her earring and tore, and Rodiste's hands got bloody.

Rodiste gave Anorna the earring he accidentally tore off of Throgana's body. It made him feel smug to give Anorna a gift like this, as if he were paying her for noble privilege again, instead of being bred to her like a stallion.

Osirus is having an illicit affair with another slave--Savanna. Rodiste is worried that his brother may have been caught, and forced to do something foolish.

When the Shamibelians overran Anarinuell, Puria tried to hide her sons in a rug, all rolled up. When she realized it was hopeless, she smothered them to death rather than let them become slaves. Look at the way Hralib died? It was as if someone was trying to send a message, the way he was rolled up in that rug.

Round Two Props

Round Two Additional Goals

  1. Rodiste should get his hands on another gift to give the next girl he's bred to, so he can feel like he's noble privileging her, too.
  2. Find some way to make Yvette feel a little better.
