Rotating!

Why Rotate?
Let's face it, we're outnumbered. Using our defend tactics, we only have a select few people who can be engaged. They could have five or so shamibelians attacking them. Rotating out will get them defended while they disengage everyone on them. Once they're disengaged and their timers are stopped, the healers can work their magic. If they aren't too bad off, they can enter the fray again. Hopefully this will keep down fatalities.
When to Rotate
First thing first: if you are ordered to rotate, you do it. From the battle I was in, either Army_Orders or Infantry_Orders was used to tell people when to rotate. Someone asked me what I thought about rotating if the player of the character believes they're fine enough to keep fighting, but ordered to rotate. My answer was to remember the IC Rule: Act now, and if you must question, question later. Remember that not following orders can be hazardous to your health from both fronts.
Some of it is your own judgement. If you think you need to switch out because of the damage being done to you and the frequency of your getting it, organize it with the spearman you're defending. Yes, the commanders are doing their best to check people's damage, but they could miss it. If it's IC of you to keep fighting? Go for it. If you think you'd try to get some healerly relief? Arrange a rotation.
How to Rotate
Alright, I'm going to post four ways to rotate. Frankly, it depends on the situation.
1) Rotate within line without putting Archer in danger
- Sword defends Spear defends Archer. Sword needs to swap with Spear.
- Spear may or may not want to swap their weapon. Remember that while engaged it takes a cycle to unwield and a cycle to wield. Consider your weapon skills.
- Sword undefends Spear. (Undefend is automatic.)
- Sword defends Archer. (Archer is now defended by Sword and Spear.)
- Spear waits until Archer is defended, then undefends Archer. (Undefend is automatic.) (Archer is now defended by Sword.)
- Spear defends Sword. (Archer is now defended by Sword is defended by Spear.)
- After defending Archer, while Spear is doing stuff, Sword disengages everything. They can just input 'stop' and it will keep disengaging until free.
- Sword stops fighting. Once timers are stopped, Sword can ask healer for healing.
2) Rotate with a floater
Quick Note: I heard Argin was trying to do this. I haven't done it in practice myself. This is speculation.
- Sword defends Spear defends Archer. Floater is a floater.
- Floater defends Sword. (Archer defended by Spear defended by Sword defended by Floater.)
- Sword disengages everything. They can use 'stop'.
- Spear is out of luck until Floater undefends when Sword is healed.
3) Rotate with a floater and a healer
Quick Note: This is a spin on 3, but I think it'd be more productive, as it won't take Spear out of commission.
- Sword defends Spear defends Archer. Floater is a floater. Healer may be defended by Archer or another line. Doesn't much matter. Healer could be replaced by an Archer if said Archer is not defending anyone.
- Floater defends Spear. (Archer defended by Spear defended by Sword and Floater)
- Sword undefends Spear. (Undefend is automatic.)
- Healer defends Sword. (Archer defended by Spear defended by Floater. Sword defended by Healer.)
- Sword disengages everything. They can use 'stop'.
- Healer heals Sword when Sword's timers stop.
- When Sword is healed and okayed to reenter, Healer undefends Sword. Sword is now a floater.
4) Rotate within line while putting Archer in danger Quick Note: Try to only use this one if you have to, such as Sword desperately needing to disengage an enemy before spending a timer cycle on defending or else they'll die.
- Sword defends Spear defends Archer. Sword needs to swap with Spear.
- Sword undefends Spear. (Undefend is automatic.)
- Spear undefends Archer. (Undefend is automatic.)
- Spear defends Sword. (Archer is undefended.)
- Sword disengages the threat.
- Once Sword disengages the main threat, Sword defends Archer. (Spear defends Sword defends Archer.)
- Sword disengages everything. They can use 'stop'.
Q&A
Why does the sword have to disengage if they're defended?
That's how code works. You're not magically distracting all of your Sword's attackers. You're intercepting any new ones. When Sword manages to disengage them, if they try to reengage they will be intercepted by the Spear. That's why the disengaging step is so important. Technically, Sword could start disengaging before Spear protects them; they'd just have to hope Spear defends quickly or the Shami fails to engage them again.
What if I'm defending someone, but ordered to defend someone else?
That's an IC decision. But as I mentioned before, not obeying orders could be a bad thing. Obey first, question later, unless your commander says otherwise.
Final Note
I realize I probably should have used 'Front' instead of Sword. A spear can defend a spear. But there are a lot of instances of Sword and I don't want to change it now. Plus, if I'm being honest, I don't think a spear defending a spear will be anywhere near as common as a sword defending a spear. Sorry!
