Official Statement

Alright everybody, let's make this quick before the goats haul us out of here. If we don't figure out who killed Hralib, they're going to execute all his slaves--including my wife, your Princess, Teonia. So let's not pussyfoot around. Let's treat it like we would if we were guards doing an investigation. I want a name and an official statement from each of you about anything you know. And I want to start with you, Torianos, because your wife's life is on the line too. I know you hated Hralib for selling you to another master and separating you from Melani--maybe you thought that by killing him, you two could be together, but that's not how Shamibelian law works. So what do you have to say for yourself?

Background

Savaren was Prince General Savaren Elianik, an angry young man prone to temper tantrums when he did not get his way. While this used to be a rare occurrence since he was a Prince and an heir apparent to the throne, the Fall changed many things. When Anarinuell was first captured, Savaren refused to kneel in supplication and abase himself before the conquerors, saying they could kill him if they wanted to. Hralib killed his brother Rislan instead, to punish him for his insolence, right in front of his eyes. Savaren has never gotten over it.

Savaren always had many plots and plans being built in his mind, how to reclaim the glory of the Elianik family and help the republic to recover to the power that it was under his grandfather. One to keep his own counsel, Savaren does not trust anyone but those who have shown their worth, but that does not stop him from attempting to use people in his path to further his own goals. He tends to view only those he knows well and trusts as actual people. Others he views more as objects to either help or hinder his progress, reluctant to make the effort to make a real connection with other unless he thinks he can trust the person not to betray him. He views the Fall as a temporary thing and has every intention of working to make sure that Anarinuell is freed - and not only freed, but that he is directly responsible for that freedom.

Relationships

  • Hashi -- Savaren's master.
  • Fissia -- Hashi's wife, and Savaren's mistress.
  • Gilin, Yvette, and Aylina -- Hashi's other slaves. Savaren lives with them in Fissia's home.
  • Teonia - Savaren's wife, Hralib had her publically violated and impregnated by Rodiste. Savaren has never forgotten - or forgiven.
  • Zaridos - a prince of the Eagle clan and now gladiator slave.
  • Torianos and Lucas -- fellow princes, who are now enslaved just like Savaren is.

Goals

  1. Blame the Fall of Anarinuell on Zaridos and Lucas.
  2. Retrieve your brother Rislan's skull, somehow, and give it proper funeral rites.
  3. Find the Ranivor's medallion that used to be around Throgana's neck.
  4. Prove who killed Hralib so that not all his slaves are executed--because Teonia is one of them.
  5. Use Ladonna to communicate secretly with the other leaders of the rebellion

Savaren Round One

Round One Reveal

Savaren has seen Hralib's slave Perdita spending a lot of time in the Slave Temple where no Shamibelian but Tatomir can go. She could be plotting anything there, and if anyone was going to chance upon Throgana and kill her in the temple, it'd be Perdita.

Inaya was very upset with the way Hralib mistreated her son Torianos and her daughter-in-law, Melani. She's a very protective mother--she would kill to protect her son. Savaren wonders if she did.

Savaren once heard Lucas say that the Firan Resistance would have more success if they killed some prominent Firan traitors, to show what would happen to collaborators like Throgana.

Even if Savaren's divisions were unable to stop the Invasion after the Shamibelians broke Zaridos' line, why is he to blame? The Shamibelian army rolled over Zaridos after the failure of his stupid plan, and everyone blames Savaren for being unable to clean up Zaridos' mess? Unfair!

Besides, Savaren always wonders if Lucas was just picking his nose back in Anarinuell, on the day of the invasion. The city is fortified with such an internal system of walls that it should never have fallen into enemy hands. Lucas should have been able to hold out there, with the First Division, for years. He's obviously a talentless hack, and responsible for the Fall of Anarinuell.

Round One Conceal

Savaren despised Hralib for keeping his wife, Princess Teonia, as a slave and violating her publicly. Savaren swore revenge on Hralib. In the meantime though, it has been difficult on their marriage, especially when Hralib "bred" her to Rodiste and made her give birth to his son.

Since that incident, Savaren has had a very hard time dealing with Teonia; he can't quite look at her in the same way. Savaren is likely to reject or push her away if he sees her.

Savaren told Rodiste that if he was any kind of real man, he'd have died before defiling a Firan princess like Teonia by mating with her in public--at Hralib's order or no.

Savaren considered it a personal affront that Hralib let his slave girl Throgana walk around wearing the Ranivor's medallion as jewelry. He'd have killed her to get it.

Throgana told Savaren's wife Teonia she ought to thank Hralib for being kind enough to mate her to at least a nobleman like Rodiste, instead of whining and carrying on about how she was publicly humiliated and bred to another man than Savaren. That bitch deserved to die.

Savaren, Zaridos, Lucas, Torianos and Jalil are all leaders of the Firan Underground Resistance movement. They all snuck away from the Night of Obala's Pride festivities to meet at the Temple of Zin for their rebel's meeting. They used forged permits to get there.

Savaren, Zaridos, Torianos and Lucas all got into a terrible fight the Night of Obala's Pride in the Temple of Zin. Of course, everyone knows that Elianiks are famous for brawling.

Last night, Savaren came home wet and shivering, with a bloody nose. And no, he doesn't want to talk about it.

Savaren knows that after he, Zaridos, Lucas and Torianos all brawled in the Temple of Zin, Jalil was angry with them for fighting in a temple, and demanded that Zaridos hand over a ring that he was wearing.

Savaren remembers Jalil telling Zaridos, "Give me that effing ring," and then stalking off with it. If it was Tatomir's Ring of Hate, it might have made him murderously violent--and the ring did end up on Hralib's dead body by morning.

Round One Props

  • cipher
  • wedding necklace that matches Teonia's

Savaren Round Two

Round Two Reveal

Savaren knows that Jalil cautioned the Firans against killing Hralib, because he knew that, by Shamibelian law, if a master is murdered and the killer isn't found, all of his slaves are considered conspirators and put to death. That's the same reason that Savaren wouldn't have done it. He needs to protect Teonia, who is one of Hralib's slaves.

Savaren believes that Orsatos has always been loyal to the Princes, having tutored them for many years at the palace, and that he was just pretending to be a good slave so as to avoid suspicion when he eventually killed Hralib. Of course, Savaren thinks Orsatos is more loyal to Zaridos than to the rest of them, and that's a problem.

Savaren knows that Forlanis's slave Katriana was very nervous the Night of Obala's Pride, and muttered something about a "bloody" job she had to do. What could that have been about?

Savaren saw Vitara Pevifa, Hralib's wife, sneak off from the Night of Obala's Pride. Where might she have been going?

Sarina woke up Savaren in the wee hours of the morning to get Gilin--both of them left. Savaren can't think of anything legitimate that those two women could have been doing up at that hour.

Savaren knows that the Tibenya slave Renik has been stealing red cap juice from Bivin's crop and selling it for profit on the side--Hralib found out, and was about to turn Renik in.

Teonia told Savaren that Rodiste can't remember much of what happened on the Night of Obala's Pride after he had some 'special time' with Aylina in the catacombs.

Savaren saw that just as Hralib and his slave Throgana were leaving the Night of Obala's Pride, Vitara Fissia let her husband's dog Spike loose, and told him KILL!

When the Shamibelians met Zaridos' army on the battlefield, it was as if they knew what his plan was already, and were able to exploit that knowledge. Clearly, Zaridos had a traitor in his organization--someone who wrote Shamibelian. Doesn't Lucas' wife write in perfect Shamibelian?

Besides, this is all Zaridos' fault. He was a glory hound. He always drew up plans that kept Savaren's army out of the action, and then sent for them after the battles were over. He claimed it was slow messengers, and the like, but really, Savaren knows he was just doing it to make him look bad.

Round Two Conceal

Savaren knows that the Samiroon slave Ladonna is the Mata Hari of the Firan resistance movement, and carries messages between the Firans in coded songs. If she's willing to take those risks, wouldn't she take the risk of assassinating the Shamibelian Governor? And hey, weren't Zaridos and Lucas leading that movement?

Savaren knows that the Firan resistance planned to kill Hralib in order to sew confusion, just before the Firans launched a counter-invasion against Anarinuell. Perhaps Ladonna had the opportunity and just jumped the gun?

On the Night of Obala's Pride, Savaren came home with a bloody nose which resulted from the Firan princes brawling over a strategy disagreement.

On the Night of Obala's Pride, Savaren came home wet and shivering. He knows this is because when he and Zaridos got into an argument about strategy during their revolutionary meeting, Zaridos shoved him in the pool of Zin. Even now, Savaren feels like he's suffering from hypothermia.

Savaren knows that Orsatos was embezzling funds from Hralib and sneaking stenis his way to help pay for the rebellion. If Hralib had found out, he'd have killed Orsatos, so maybe Orsatos killed him first.

Savaren has been spending a lot of time with Ladonna to work out ciphers and codes that she can use in her songs. He thinks that she's worthy to take noble privilege upon.

Savaren knows that Lucas was wet and shivering after the Night of Obala's Pride because when the Princes got into an argument about strategy, Zaridos pushed Lucas in the pool of Zin.

Savaren is fluent in Shamibelian.

Rodiste should have died before daring to lay hands on Teonia and certainly, she couldn't have stopped Hralib. But she actually bore Rodiste a son, and though Savaren loves her, he feels humiliated by her infidelities. He also feels jealous that she seems to bear Rodiste no ill will. She must prove her love to him if they stand a chance.

Round Two Props

Round Two Additional Goals

  1. Find an opportunity to quietly noble privilege Ladonna without taking her from her duties long.
  2. Find some way to make Rodiste pay for touching Teonia.
  3. Convince Teonia to prove her love if the marriage is to survive. Give her a test--a hard one.

Savaren Round Three

Round Three Reveal

Everyone knows that Keeli is fluent in Shamibelian, and that she used to be a slave before the invasion. She's probably the one who leaked Zaridos' battle plans to the Shamibelians and caused the downfall of the Republic.

Savaren knows that on the Night of Obala's Pride, the pool at the Temple of Zin was clear and sparkling, with a little layer of ice on its surface. Now, however, it's filthy with ash and there's a two-man-size-hole in the ice. They suspect Hralib was drowned there, and that the water simply froze on him after he was already dead.

Savaren heard that Jalil has been seeking a very strong concentration of poison, which, when ingested, causes a quick death.

Savaren knows Throgana found out that Zaridos has been communicating with his sister Ania in the Free Firan Republic, and that he feared she would turn him in to Hralib. The best motive of all to kill her.

Ladonna told Savaren that Orsatos stole her cipher yesterday, and she was bound and determined to get it back. If she was at the Great Library last night, it would have been to get the cipher from Orsatos, not to kill Hralib. Now that Savaren thinks about it, exactly how loyal can Orsatos be, if he stole their cipher? Was he going to give it to Hralib and betray them?

Round Three Conceal

Savaren was sick of Zaridos getting all the glory. How many times did Zaridos delay calling for Savaren, or send him off on fools errands, or trick him into taking an inglorious position on the battlefield? A man has his pride, and Savaren wasn't going to take it anymore.

He came up with a plan to make Zaridos look bad. He leaked some of Zaridos' battleplans to the Shamibelians, and positioned his army in such a way as to "save the day" when the Shamibelians rolled over Zaridos.

Unfortunately, it didn't work out that way. Savaren was unable to stop them, and they defeated his army too. He knows he's responsible for the Fall of Anarinuell, and he's sick over it.

There is only one way to redeem his failures: if he can get Zaridos and Lucas to acknowledge him as the outright leader of the resistance movement, he can bring about a second Fall, this time of the Shamibelian occupation. Surely, with Zaridos following his plans, instead of holding him back, he can lead the resistance to glory, and it is time Lucas acknowledged how badly he botched the defense of Anarinuell.

When it comes to Teonia, did she ever have a choice at all? No, she really didn't. Not even the chance to die to escape, which Rodiste did. If Savaren wants to reclaim his status, he needs his wife, and he's blamed her long enough.

Also...is Rodiste trying to insert himself in Savaren's place with Teonia? This might even be worse than what he was forced to do. If nothing else, Savaren had better get closer to Teonia again right away, or he might see his chance stolen away.

Round Three Props

Round Three Additional Goals

  1. Get Zaridos and Lucas to acknowledge Savaren as head of the resistance.
  2. Reconcile with Teonia; maybe even apologize for blaming her for so long.
