SCIRLUT: Outpost on the Plains

This Firan city plays a prominent role in the bitter feud between the Gold Dragon and Griffon Clans. After the capture of Anarinuell, Firgalas ordered his soldiers not only to hold the golden jewel of a city they had taken, but also to go and sack the nearby city of Scirlut -- the city from which all successful Griffon Clan counter-attacks were mounted.

The attack on Scirlut, led by Elianos at his father's orders, was particularly brutal. The city was nearly burned to the ground, thousands of civilians were murdered, and the Griffons claimed that Gold Dragon soldiers raped their women in an attempt to demoralize them. The Griffon citizens that escaped fled to the city of Ellish. Those who remained were said to have been forced into servitude for the Gold Dragons and otherwise oppressed.

It was at this time that Firgalas earned the moniker 'The Butcher of Scirlut' and the reason that Elianos is often known of as 'The Son of the Butcher'. It was commonly taught to Griffon children that Firgalas and his sons ate Griffon children for breakfast. It was only after the Great War, when the Griffons and Gold Dragons had to unite against a common enemy that these tensions abated.

Still, the Griffon clan has never forgotten Scirlut, which was until recently in Gold Dragon hands, and as if to make their domination clear, the Gold Dragons often spelled the city name as 'Skirlut' instead of 'Scirlut'. The city was the source of a great deal of controversy in recent years, when then Clan Leader Jalil Firgalik turned it over as a wedding gift to his second son Judanus, thereby passing it into Griffon hands.

Many of the citizens were quite infuriated, and a civil war was the result - a group of rebels called the Blood Dragons rose up to fight against this perceived injustice, and they attempted to start their own clan and to reclaim the city, having among their number such respected figures as Prince Sadin Elianik, Lady Leyla Firgalik, and Mer Firuell Aurik. Eventually the Blood Dragons were defeated, and now the city is jointly administered by Republic forces and the Griffon clan - it is a source of resentment among Gold Dragons to this day.
