Social Requests for Player Helpers
From FiranMUX
One Player Helper Duty is to process routine social requests, take a first look at social requests that may need to be sent to the wizards, and deny those social requests that are without merit or aren't worthy of wizard attention.
In general, remember that as PlayerHelpers handling socials, we are representing the NPC POPULATION. This isn't about what you as a player or you as a character thinks, but rather what you think the NPC population of Firan might think. Your character might love X's speech, but if you think the NPC populace would hate it, then you should vote accordingly.
Conflict of interest rules apply when running and voting on social polls. If your character (any of them) would benefit or be hurt by the social adjust DO NOT vote in the poll and DO NOT take the @helpreq. You MAY provide information about the situation, but you should not try to sway those who are voting and should abstain from voting in the social poll.
If you PROCESS a social nomination, please make sure you refund the player their CP (the instructions are in the helpreq). If you send the helpreq to WIZARDS, DO NOT refund the CP. Staff will do so.

Social Request Overview
A social request, for our purposes, is a speech, judgment, or social nomination ('help @social/nominate') submitted by a player.
We do two things with social requests:
1) For routine social requests, we PROCESS them with one of our process types. A routine social request is something that falls into our @social/process categories, explained below.
2) For non-routine social requests, we either DENY them if they are without merit or don't merit wizard attention or TRANSFER them to the wizards.
Please make a special note. DO NOT process or deny military unenlistment helpreqs. Send them directly to staff.
Automatic Denials
A few of our helpreqs get automatic denials -- a /very/ few. These have been mostly rendered moot with the new policies about social noms and speeches, but if you come across them, feel free to deny with reasonings:
- Announcements of parties or events to come.
- Adoption judgments, with the exception of noble adoptions.
- Social noms based on posts posted on board 13.
Social Process Amounts & Categories
Amounts of social points awarded for each type of social process.

Recognition -- +50,000 (Republic/Clan) +25,000 (Unimportant) Process as recogition from the Republic or Clans or some other recognition.
Scandal -- -50,000 (Republic/clan) -25,000 (Of lesser import) Process for social scandals that affect either the Republic as a whole or a specific Clan.
Each of these should be self-explanatory (except for arrest and conviction, which are often confused). In many cases, when you go to run the @social/process, there may be sub-questions (such as, "Does this duty impact the Republic or a Clan?"). Answer these questions based on your best judgment. Often, the difference in SP they make doesn't make it worth polling the 'impact Republic or Clan' separately.
Polls
Sometimes requests are not as clear cut. When this happens, we run a poll to get 5 votes to either deny, process, or wiz. Anything you believe should be denied NEEDS to get 5 votes to do so -- even if it seems clear-cut.
Running Polls
There are two ways to run polls. The first is via the PlayerHelper channel. See if there are four others online who are willing to do socials with you, and discuss the @helpreq on the channel. Once you have five votes in the same direction, you can process (or deny or send to the wizards) the social request.
The second way is via the web forum. Log into the web forum's PlayerHelper polls (ask if you don't know the current password for the section). Then:
- Select 'New Topic.'
- Make the Topic Title the name of the @helpreq (e.g. Adan: Rebellion in the Clan!)
- Add anything for the poll title and content.
- For the 'Poll Options' pick what you think the most likely responses are. For example, a common set is 'Wizard, Deny, Process as..., Abstain' where 'Process as...' asks people to fill in what they think the process category should be.
- In the text box, cut and paste the @helpreq, making sure to include the @helpreq number at the top.
Please be sure to post your PHer name when voting for social noms, so that we can use it when finishing the voting. If your PHer name is already in your signature, that's fine.
And then you're done. Wait for the votes to roll in, and nudge people to go vote if you're having trouble getting votes
Currently, we're finding that running socials on the PlayerHelper channel is quicker than the web forum, but both are good choices to get a social done.
Denying
A social request can be denied for several reasons:
- The social request doesn't have merit. In other words, we don't think the NPC population feels that way or would care about what the person is nominating about.
- The social request has merit, but does not fit into one of our @social/process categories AND we do not think the wizards would adjust the people involved (positive or negative) for more than 100,000 SP. This is called the 'BFD' rule. If it doesn't fit into a category, yet isn't a big f'n deal, it should be denied.
- The social request is more suited to a praise or diss campaign.
- The social request is announcing an event that has not happened yet (e.g. a speech about a party that will be held in the future, or asking for applications for a new minister position).
Wizzing
A social request should be sent to the wizards when it does not fit into an accepted category AND we feel that the wizards would adjust the social request for more than 100,000 SP, positive or negative.
Commands for Socials
To process:
@social/process <player list>/<social type>=<reason>
This will post to @bb 41 (the socials board) an adjust for <player list> and the text will be the <reason> you give. Take a look at existing posts on the board for examples of what you can put as reasons, but, in general, short is better than trying to be creative. Try not to make too many thematic judgments: We're looking for things like, 'The people are happy to hear about the birth of a new noble kid. It will certainly make the Clan stronger.'
Then @helpreq/finish as normal, noting the five people who voted to process (if you ran a poll) and referencing the @bb 41 post (or copy and pasting the 'reason' you gave above).
To transfer to wizards:
@helpreq/transfer <#>/SOCIAL=<comments>
When transferring, please note the five PlayerHelpers who voted to send it to the wizards and why they voted to send it to the wizards (e.g. Mary, Joe, Bob, Sue, and Tom all thought the NPC's would be outraged that Nydiam was killing babies for fun.).
To deny:
@helpreq/deny <#>=<reason>
When denying, please note the five PlayerHelpers who voted to deny and their reasoning. Also be sure to note that the player can appeal if he or she wishes, make sure you include the helpreq # as players do not get them with their #helpreq response and wizards will not process without this information.
