Terminology

Firan uses a lot of terminology that might sound weird to the beginning player. This is separated into two different groups, OOC and IC terms. OOC terms are largely code or policy related, with quite a lot of overlap between our terms and other MUSH terms. IC terms are words relating to the Firan theme that will come up quite frequently in conversation. It's good to have an idea what all of them mean.

OOC (Out of Character) Vocabulary

@bb: Firan's bulletin board system. See help @bb for more info.

@mail: Firan's mail system. Just like +mail, but with a different prefix. See 'help @mail' for more.

@request: Firan's system for Getting Stuff Done. See 'help @request' and the Getting Help section below.

Cron job: An automated task that's set to go off on a timer -- a good example would be 'Egg Time' when all of the chickens on the game lay their eggs.

DB Save: Refers to the saving of the game's database; causes a freeze of varying intervals every so often.

FacHead: Those yellow people on the @where. Shorthand for 'Faction Head', there's one for each clan on the game plus the Old City. Their purpose is to get plots active and keep people informed of what's happening in their clan.

FVB: The Firan Virgin Brigade. A dwindling, exclusive club (mostly due to the Princely Alliance To Destroy The FVB). See Sabinus for membership details.

OC: An abbreviation for the 'Old City': see IC terms below.

Router: a computer on the Internet which passes data from one source to another; frequently the cause of delay (lag).

Staff: Alias for the wizards of Firan. Sometimes includes 'Playerhelpers', but usually only refers to the wizards. Also known as wizcorp, wizzies, funky cool people and They Who Must Be Obeyed And Fed Chocolate.

IC (In Character) Terminology

Anarinuell: The city in which the majority of the game is set. Home of the Ranivor and the leaders of the 8 clans.

Clan Leader: The absolute ruler of one of the 8 Firan clans. Can be either male or female. See Who's Who for a list.

Mes and Mer: These are the Firan equivalents of Ms. and Mr. Mer is male, and Mes is female.

Monotheist: A member of the True Temple, one who believes that Zutiv is the only true god and that all others are but aspects of him.

Old City: The flooded-out and partially-destroyed remnants of Old Anarinuell, which are mostly inhabited by outcasts and criminals. It's a dangerous place to go for anyone who doesn't live there, and often fatal for guards.

Palace District: The Palace District is the central part of the city of Anarinuell, home of the Ranivor and the Forum, the city's main marketplace.

Ranivor: The absolute ruler of all of the Firan Republic, Vahlgellan. His equivalent would be a king or emperor. He is married to Queen Eliana.

Sarkaran: The city across the river from Anarinuell, in the Cockatrice Clan lands. Where the spring and fall festivals are held.

Shamibelian: The Firan's non-human enemies, who once invaded from the southwest and continue to harry attacks upon the Firan lands to this day. Every year, the Firan armies go south to combat the Shamibelians and attempt to retake the city of Ellish.
