Naerala, the Toll Taker nods in greeting to Razaq and collects his traveler's fee of 5,000 stenis for passage to Lurashar.

Gemma eyes Mamoon for a moment and grins, "Of course! I always bring enough to share." the Dame says, tossing the bottle over to the man. *Firan*

"Beautiful weather. A little bit of Uf, a little bit of Elik." Why, for Aeryk, that's almost chipper. He does not, mind, ask for whiskey. Merely starts trudging.

Mamoon praised Gemma because 'A friend with booze is a friend I'd choose!'!

Zutani hands over the stenis without really looking at the toll taker. She's more interested at her surroundings, even if it's all covered with snow now. "I have never traveled to Lurashar," she says to no one in particular. *Firan*

Mamoon drinks 1 wolfsbend whiskey.

Daemio watches the last stragglers come in and reaches back to pull out his whiskey bottle from his bag. He takes a deep drink from it himself, dark eyes lingering a bit longer on dirty yelling Niobe.

Davonos is quiet, as ever. He hands over the stenis without protest, and looks out over the snow landscape without much feeling despite the sting of the cold against his skin.

Srenni decides to set her sights on the Fort. Ooh, strength and fine architecture. Or perhaps it's just the soldier in her. Of course, her eyes are frequently moving to the sky to check for griffons, too. They're /friendly/ griffons -- hopefully.

While the group walks, the pirate Mamoon tells them comfortingly, "We aren't goin' to slow down nor rest until we get to the city. We'll stay there a day, maybe two, to let the stragglers catch up - of which there are many! Perhaps you'll want to remember who came first, hmm? In any case... Let's walk, and I'll answer questions if you've got any about what we're doing... But first, you'll have to tell me all you can about you."

Niobe doesn't seem to mind walking at least, used to it no doubt. Trudging along without even asking for some of that whiskey being passed around! Mostly though she keeps to herself, an eye on the direction they're taking.

Razaq comes to pass the toll, and he frowns slightly but hands the stenis over before tucking a scroll away. Pulling the byrrus up over his head to cover his face, he moves on towards the group quietly.

Zutani looks towards the side when she spots something or rather...someone and pauses briefly in her steps. "Should you be coming with us?" she asks Kai quietly. Oops, the group's still moving so she picks up her pace slightly. She continues to huddle in he cloak, waiting for someone else to speak first. *Firan*

Gemma looks towards Kai and then Mamoom, "Is it safe for young Cubs to be on this journey?" she asks, wrinkling her nose before taking another glass of whiskey to her mouth, "- mean, I can't ------- his parents just letting him go off!" *Firan*

Kai is spotted. Time to do the heroic thing! Hide!

Aeryk puts two fingers against the bridge of his nose and pins it with them. "Far be it from me to worry over a child being here, but this dance is beginning to grow irritating. I /would/ ask questions." His eyes stray Mamoon wise. *Firan*

Mamoon eyes Gemma. "What do you mean, cub? Who are you..." He squints, and then, when Kai does a bad job hiding, the old pirate spots him. "Why, what are you doing out here, child? I told you you couldn't come." He does a poor job trying to look stern. *Firan*

Srenni frowns immediately as attention is brought to Kai, and she /sees/ his attempt to hide. And -- there's his body guard, to give him away. Her eyes narrow at him and she states flatly, "What kind of body guard are you, letting a child go so far from the city, anyway?" *Firan*

The jig is up! Kai informs Mamoon "Shh! Every good pirate story has a -stowaway-!"

Daemio's head turns and he seems to finally spot the kid himself but Srenni's all over it so he just shrugs and pases.

Gemma eyes Kai again, "You should go ---- with your guard little one. I'd hate to have to tell someone a sea monster /ATE YOU!/" *Firan*

Mamoon laments to the child, "You didn't do a good job stowing away, they saw you before we even got to the ship." He seems to hesitate though, and asks the child, "Do you have parents?" Gemma's mention of sea monsters has him asking her very seriously, "You've been to my islands before, have you?" *Firan*

"I think he is an orphan," Davonos mutters more to himself than to Gemma, though he is not hard to hear. "One who could use a good kick in the head. The guard too." The brunt of the Hydran's attention turns to the guard Srenni is questioning, and he frowns as he lifts a hand to brush snow out of his hair.

Razaq spots Kai trying to hide, and the cloaked man says, "Curiousity and adventure go hand in hand with children. I don't see why he can't follow, as his guardians have done a pretty poor job keeping track of him. Keep him along, unles someone is going to go back with him." *Firan*

Kai shakes his head and tells Mammoon "I'm an Orphan. I live at the temple." *Firan*

"Whether it is safe for him to go along is more a matter of what kind of journey this is. And the hint is that it is either quite dangerous or little more than an elaborate game," Aeryk puts in as he trudges. "If this is - essentially an extended festival game, he will perhaps not come to harm. If this is dangerous, then he should not be along."

"Then you should be back in the city," Gemma says, attention taken momentarily by Mamoom's words.

Mamoon chides Gemma somewhat crazily, "I didn't say they were /mean/ sea monsters." To Kai he decides, "You can come along, I suppose. You were /not/ kidnapped, and I want a scroll written up for you to make your mark on saying as much. Who has scrolls, who can write? This child was not kidnapped! You won't compete you, but you'll be my helper. My eyes." He almost pokes the child in the eye, gesturing to his. "And my ears." He yanks the child's ears a little too hard. "Got it?" *Firan*

"Obviously someone cares enough about his life to assign a bodyguard to him," Srenni states to the rest, not approving in the least. Even Srenni doesn't have a bodyguard! And it is the bodyguard she addresses, not Kai, "You will take him back. Who is your employer?" It goes back to 'what kind of bodyguard are you?', really.

Kai says "Ouch! Yeah!" *Firan*

The cloaked man shakes his head, "If he's trailed this far, and hasn't listened, what makes you think he'll listen and leave? I'd rather have him in my sights than have him trying to poorly sneak and get himself in trouble. I'll watch him.." but Mamoon has agreed and he merely nods, going back to silently walkign alongside them. Gemma doesn't look /at all/ happy about the kid staying or the guard.

Daemio doesn't look happy at all either. He clears his throat, "Mer can't the boy's incompetent guardian take him -----" *Firan*

Zutani just shakes her head before opening her backpack to pull out an empty scroll. "What do you want written?" she offers. *Firan*

Mamoon doesn't pay much attention to all the dissenting voices behind him. Instead he turns his ethereal blue eye on Zutani, the brown one still locked on the child before him, "Write something like I..." Squint. "That child's name... Agree that I was not kidnapped, neither by force nor favour, to come along on this voyage. Any risk of life and limb is my own to assume, not the pirate Mamoon's. And then have him sign it." He gestures to Zutani. "And you can witness, if you please." *Firan*

The look Aeryk gives Kai is of profound irritation. "And I would have hoped against this one - running up to me or other nobles at any off opportunity and barking a 'hello!' But so be it." Others are dissenting - Aeryk's voice will not really aid. But he does sound a bit cranky for sure.

Kai informs Srenni "His name is Brutus. He can't talk on account of bein hit in the throat. Lady Suphi hired him for me in case the people from FarAway came to Anarinuell and tried ta kidnap me." Brutus dutifully tugs on his high collared tunic to show his scar and then puts a hand over his mouth. Kai states "He has a horn he can blow when there's trouble... but since I'm not bein kidnapped he didn't blow it." Kai looks to the scroll and utifully informs the scriber thereof "My name is Kai. Kai from Faraway." *Firan*

Zutani nods to Mamoon and before she starts writing, she looks to Kai. When he gives his name, she arches a brow. "Faraway, is it?" *Firan*

Davonos looks like he's got some major sand in his panties, but he does not speak. He merely clenches his jaw and looks back out at the path ahead, numb hands flexing stiff at his sides.

Kai says "Yes. FarAway." *Firan*

Niobe doesn't seem to care one way or another about the kid tagging along. In fact all the arguing going on about it just has the Istems woman looking amused. The bodyguard with Kai gets a nod though, with a smirk tagged on.

Daemio clears his throat, "Mer Mamoon this his highly inappropriate. While I understand you feel some misguided desire to see that this child... actually I don't know why you would feel compelled to put your arse on the line for a troublesome orphan they're usually more trouble then they're worth... but some one takes care of this kid, as evidenced by the shoddy guardian trailling him. It's really rather inapproriate to drag him off with adults on a challenge that could be dangerious. And unwise." See all the nobles are saying so it must be true. *Firan*

"Well, he looks strong enough to hold a mop," Mamoon says stubbornly, almost Belik-like in posture. "And I need my decks swabbed. Unless /you/ want to do it?" Squinting at Daemio a moment, the old pirate abruptly turns and continues walking. "We are wasting time. Time's a wastin'! Make the child sign while he walks."

A low laugh is heard from beneath the cowl of the byrrus, and the words, "Inappropriate from a pirate. Ha! That's rich." and Razaq continues on walking.

Daemio waves a hand, "I'm sure your do eyes Ticanee there will be happy to swab what ever you want if you ask her nicely enough." He takes another drink and rolls his eyes. "If the kid winds up drowning Mer Marmoon its on your feck'n head." *Firan*

Gemma just keeps looking at Mamoon. She whirls around at Daemio too, "With yer ass!" she grunts, as she immediately jumps. *Firan*

Aeryk gives Daemio a look for the 'feck' and then quietly exhales. "So be it. Let's walk," he half repeats. *Firan* The sun starts to set on the Firan lands.

Srenni glares down at Kai, irritation flashing through her eyes. Well, there's /some/ emotion, anyway. "I rather doubt Lady Suphi hired a bodyguard to bring a child out of the walls, let alone to another city. /Into/ danger." But she's made it clear that he's earned her ire, so she turns and starts down the road, steps firm. "How far is Lurashar along this road?" she calls back. *Firan*

Zutani finishes writing on the scroll but doesn't hand it over just yet. "Is there anything else anyone wish for me to add to this?" Her gaze shifts to the young boy with a hint of concern. *Firan*

Niobe still remains a little off to the side of the group. As it's decided to get to walking again, or at least picking up the pace she does so. Hefting her mostly empty backpack at this point to head towards Lurashar with a purpose. Boooooty.

"Couple days," the old man grunts back over his shoulder, seemingly tireless at the moment. Mamoon trudges along in front, clearly intent on going onward despite the protestations of his followers over the child that has found a spot among them. "Nobody has any questions about what is ahead of them? Or are you that reluctant to speak of yourselves, eh? The journey is long, and it will be a boring one if nobody says a word."

Daemio glances at Gemma, "Eh now Mes, I only say what I see." He lifts his bottle a little to her before he caps it and slides it into his backpack for the walking. "Mer Mamoon, perhaps you could explain this whole challenge while we walk." *Firan*

Davonos falls into silent step with the others, boots crunching along at an automatic military pace. He does not look at Kai or Zutani. Nor does he introduce himself just yet.

"I will make an introduction if this is required to answer questions," Aeryk begins with deep formality as his tread becomes more cautious against the icy ground. "I am Lord Aeryk IstaNydiam, third and last child of Lord Nydiam and . . . Lady Ibania, if I have a younger half sister, Cecilia. I am a pilot of some experience and skill and recently, ah, helped to take Ellish." That's enough, right? Right.

Gemma glares at Daemio, but continues on the walk.

Zutani sighs softly, her breath forming a cloud in the cold air. Handing the scroll to Kai, she tells him, "Sign it or mark it, please." She listens with one ear to the others, not introducing herself. *Firan*

"It is really quite simple," Mamoon dictates. "When we arrive on The Liberator, you will all assemble to choose a captain. This captain will choose two officers. What these titles mean you will learn later, but there is always the chance that the captain will change with any challenge - and if he does, then his mates also change." He adds, "One will go home every evening, back through the snow to Anarinuell, without the booty they sought, or the title they would like to claim." He squints at Daemio. "Now you owe me a tale about yourself." He nods to Aeryk. "You've earned a question." It sounds like he means one.

Mamoon seems to mutter to Zutani, "......."

Zutani nods silently to Mamoon.

Razaq says, "Razaq Mondarik, Eagle Clan. I'm a...merchant. Stenis, gems, gold and platinum, adventure - all of that has called me to this challenge. I run one of the auction houses at Anarinuell, and I have a trading company at Lurashar, gathers items from all over the Republic to sell at Anarinuell. So Lurashar see is my second home. Trading is what I do. You name it, I probably deal in it." is what he leaves it at that. "Seeing how nobility are coming to deal in piracy, I wonder really why - don't they have enough booty with their high sponsor tithes? Anyways, probably are bored and want adventure. I'm interested in seeing The Liberator as well, I'm wanting to get my own fleet in a few years." *Firan*

"I see," Aeryk states to Mamoon's explanation. "May I, then, assume these challenges are unlikely to be fatal?"

Aeryk asks /fantastic/ questions, apparently.

"You may assume whatever you would like," Mamoon replies benevolently to Aeryk. He beams over at Razaq. "Oooh! Goods, fine goods. You would like my gems and precious stones most of all, I think. The nobles, they... Well, here is a hint, as you did not ask a question of me, but you deserve something for your tale - they will not be as Lords and Ladies unless they are the Captain or his Officers. All others are sailors of equal rank and standing."

Daemio glances after the loincloth clad Gemma as she walks away. Since Aeryk's part of Team Stick In The Mud, he looks for both of them. This pirate thing aint that bad.

Kai seems tireless. He signs and dates the scroll and hands it to Mamoon. This pace seems insufficient for Kai so he takes to jogging in little circles. Brutus the Bodyguard seems to be relieved at the much more sedate pace of the group compared to the sheer exhaustion of chasing around Anarinuell after the kid. Kai grins widely. "I'm Kai. I'm from FarAway. When I grow up I'm gonna be a pilot and a scout in the army and make armor and weapons and be a priest of Lord Zin." He slows down long enough to show his Zin doll to Mamoon and anyone else who happens to be looking. "I wanted to be a Pirate king but since I can't be in the contest when I grow up I'll just have to take whoever wins the contest's boat then I can be the Pirate King." *Firan*

"I'm Dame Gemma Leafchaser, for a living I am a Shaman, soldier, and warrioress. I can pick most grown men up and toss them mightily off a ship or chop them down with my sword," she tells Mamoom, "I also give out the Rites for young Cubs and worship the totem of the feral Bobcat." Did she just growl?

Kai grins at Gemma "And she can kick a tackleball waaaay far and I saw her jump twenty-four feet once!" *Firan*

"Then that does not count as my question, really - and I am not here for booty, Mer," Aeryk directs toward Razaq. "I am here to represent my family and honor my father. I am not much of a pirate. But an IstaNydiam should be here."

"A good group," Mamoon concedes. "Many of you have earned questions of me with your tales - but I urge you also to listen to one another. For some weeks you will stand alone with one another upon the Liberator and my islets, and you will need to know one another intimately. Trust is important. Betrayal perhaps could be equally so, if you choose to play the game in that way." He seems to be indifferent. He tells Aeyrk bluntly, "No adventure comes without danger, but my tasks are not /overtly/ dangerous. There is no way to prevent it, however. Could someone die? Perhaps. But I hope not."

Niobe finally calls out her own tale, still listening to those of the others. Her smirk firmly in place for the most part. "Niobe Istems an' I'm a merc by trade. What better place fer a merc ta be than findin some good feckin booty?" she scuffs a boot into the muck of the road. "That an I grew up in tha canals a' tha Ol'City, know water pretty good most days. Figure might be time ta see how I does out in open water." *Firan*

Razaq listens to Mamoon, "That sounds like paradise to me." at something the pirate says. "And any fool can die anytime, get too drunk and accidently fall out of the ship during the night...accidently slipping on a wet deck and falling on a knife. Just not waking up because you smothered yourself with your blanket on your rack as you sleep." he rattles off a few ways someone could die. Hearing Niobe, he nods to her tale, "Two here for the real purpose, booty." *Firan*

Daemio reaches for his bottle one more time. Why does he keep putting it away? Who knows. Habbit perhaps. "I'm Lord Daemio Sennet. I was born a slave. My family faught for our freedom and escaped to reclaim our rightful title and name. I like whiskey, fighting and anything that leads to the deaths of our foes on the front. My dislikes include small yappy animals, floofy, froofy squealing women who act like toddlers and annoying children..." He glances at Kai and takes another drink. He's a Virgo too. *Firan*

"Then that is what I wished to hear," Aeryk says with that distance in his voice. "May no man think me a coward. I have faced death many times. By the arrows of Shamibelians, by dark lightening, by even the blades of bandits. But there is responsible risk and irresponsible risk, and while I would die for much - not for booty and a title that does not fit me." His eyes stray to Niobe and Razaq and away.

"I am Lady Srenni Sennet of the Griffon Clan, priestess of Lady Srenna and sole daughter of Lady High General Zayes Vasen-Darkas," the noblewoman introduces herself, her stride strong and proud. She does not look to the others as she continues, "I am a soldier, my first war season at the age of thirteen. Aside from the front line, I am also a scout. I was a part of the mission that stole S. S. Fudathim from the Shamibelians a couple years ago and the one that infiltrated Ellish more recently."

"I am Davonos Anizut, of the Hydra clan. My wife died some years ago, and I do not have any children or siblings. I served as a pilot for the Republic in the liberation of Ellish, and still serve as one for my clan." Perhaps notably, Davonos does not say why he is here. Nor does he elaborate on much of anything else. You whisper "The hooded man gives a nod her way." to Niobe. *Firan*

"Some with experience on boats," Mamoon contemplates, looking at Aeryk and Srenni. "Other with untold experience in other areas." One eye shifts toward Daemio. "This will be an interesting voyage. You may ask questions of one another as well - it is important that you all get to know one another as well as possible. You will be decide one another's fates. I will, once we set foot upon the Liberator, be very very scarce. Your captain will lead you. You must know who to pick." He looks to Daemio again. "Where were you held, young man?"

You sense Niobe tips her head in return.

"An interesting group," Zutani murmurs after listening to their introduction. No better than than any to introduce herself. "Zutani Zutivik, a delegate of the Chimera clan. I am a researcher and so my main purpose here, I suppose, is purely to get to experience something I never have before."

Gemma looks around, as she walks. She doesn't add or ask anything, really. She sticks out with her strange suedes and necklace with bone charms.

Daemio has a slave brand on his hand an accent and way of talking that's much rougher then most his age could manage. "We were in Ellish Mer Mamoon. Two of my uncles died this season to see our birthplace free again." His dark eyes slide to the man and fix there steadily. *Firan*

[Weather Report] Icy rain and sleet fall invisibly from a grey-black sky. It's very dark and the ice makes walking on the slippery ground difficult. A raw wind blows from the southeast.

Aeryk glances, then, to Daemio, weighing as much as curious. His steps slow yet further against the slicker road. He quite warily recalls he does not react as fast to stimulus as he once did.

The hooded man says, "I reckon most of these answers are pretty much the worst bullshits I've had pass my ears. People afraid to say, Hey...I'm here for the title as Supreme Pirate, score some fabulous booty which is sweeter by getting it through an adventure. Saying you're here for your family, bullshit answer. Saying you're here to research. Bullshit. We're all a bunch of greedy individuals. And how a noble family says piracy is something they want to be associated with, damn if I know. That's my question to you nobles. What the feck are you thinking piracy is? Some little fun tea party?"

Mamoon drinks 1 wolfsbend whiskey.

Mamoon trudges along, listening for now, whiskey at the ready.

Gemma actually isn't greedy, "I'm going to kick some arse." she tells Mamoom, "plus, I want to decorate my --- house in turquoise and jade set -- --- stones." *Firan*

Zutani looks to the man all covered up. "You may believe what you wish to believe, Mer," she says quietly, not sounding angry or offended. "Would it suit you better if I was to say I want all the gems I could get my hands on?" She just walks on after giving the man another long look. *Firan*

Razaq nods, "Yup." as he walks. *Firan*

Niobe laughs out loud finally at Zutani's words. "I would! I'd like some gold an' jewels an' anything else that's exotic an' shiny lookin shite. Figure since it were open ta all I got as much right ta this as anyone. Ain't know much about boats, cause they's different than the things we use on tha canals. But ain't goin ta make me want ta win less." *Firan*

Aeryk gives Razaq a longer weighing look. "I have noticed a distressing tendency of late for commoners to speak not only roughly to nobles, but about them. My father had a pirate nature. It is no secret. It is no shame to him or to us. It is a Zinian thing, piracy. And I do not much care if you doubt my motives." *Firan* Kai listens to Mamoon's quiet words. He grins and nods and watches Niobe for a moment.

Mamoon points semi-discreetly at Niobe.

Davonos walks on, eyeing Razaq sidelong for a short time as he goes. Fellow commoner that he is, he doesn't agree or disagree, but draws in a deep breath and holds it for a time.

Razaq says, "Oh for the love of..." as he hears Aeryk, "Pirate nature isn't meaning you're a pirate. And any noble who thinks stealing loot is good, leading a group of fine 'merchants' from port to port, trying to zip past the blasted dock inspections and taxes, hey, you've my vote. Is that what you're about?" he asks Aeryk. "Because really, I don't understand why a noble would come out here." *Firan*

Daemio looks around the area slowly, eying up everyone thoughtfully as he watches. "Some fun tea party Mer? Do I look like I brought tea with me? ---- lived a hard fecking life mer, half of it with out the benifit of a title. Unlike a lot of you, common or other wise, I know real hard grueling work that goes from well before dawn and well after dusk. I know what it's like to fall into a bed exusted and aching with blisters on your hands and feet and muscles screaming out 'rest rest!' only to haul yourself out of bed the next morening. So -- any of the lot of you think I'm some floofy priss who -- going to sit and lord over you and hide behind a fecking title you might as well go straight on home now cause obviously you got know fecking clue what you're getting into. I'm here to challenge myself and to learn and to have a damned adventure... though the gold and gems would bt nice too." He winks and takes another drink. *Firan*

Niobe sadly doesn't notice any semi-discreet gestures in her direction. She's likely too busy daydreaming about riches.

Zutani gives Niobe a little smile. "Gods only knows who will win. You might just," she notes to her. "All the 'booty' you'll ever want." Chuckling, she continues to move along and listening to what the others are saying. *Firan*

Gemma already has booty! She wiggles it as they walk.

"Do you have /any/ idea who my father was?" Aeryk's tone turns naturally chilly. So many people, and of a class he is not much associated with. "Lord Nydiam. Ferry-stealer. Rogue. I am here because none else of my family can be here. Because /he/ is dead and cannot be here. I would /not/ be here if anyone else could, because this is not how /I/ enjoy myself. I do this for him."

Mamoon abruptly turns toward Zutani. "What does a Delegate do, exactly?" *Firan*

Kai tells Mamoon in a quiet voice. Apparently not as quiet as he originally wanted it to be "I think Dame Gemma wants you to be her dumbass. That's the cockatrice word for 'Boyfriend'. I heard it from Nelisha 'cause Norik is her dumbass. Dame Gemma is really cool. She wins pentathalons and stuff." *Firan*

Gemma coughs as she inhales instead of drinks a whiskey, "A WHAT?!" she asks, "I ... I don't need any man. I have all that I need, Cub!" *Firan*

Kai puts his hand over his mouth when he realizes that whisper was more audible than intended.

Davonos blinks hard and falls back a little when he realizes the space he'd been staring blankly ahead at is, in fact, occupied by Gemma's pre-existing booty. He looks a little like he's just been hit in the face with a clod of snow as he goes.

Razaq says, "Ferry stealin' doesn't mean you're a pirate. It means you stole a ferry. Once. And I still don't think you know why you're really here." to Aeryk. "Why don't you go on home, steal a little ferry yourself, get a little drunk, talk with some women and go on home to your massive estate, rake in your seventy five percent tithes. Man, that lord over there." pointing to Daemio, "knows why he is here. Sayin' you're here because you're going to honour the dead is a bit of a bullshit." *Firan*

"I don't want to be a dumbass myself," old pirate Mamoon says. Though he does wink at Gemma with a lewd, "Though I am always looking for a way to keep warm at night." He turns back toward the Delegate however, waiting for a reply, even as more heated conversations go on behind.

Daemio lifts his bottle a bit to Razaq, "Thank you Mer but I wouldn't advise insulting Lord Aeryk here. He's a very serious man --- I can see him becoming very serious about holding your head under water if he felt youw ere insulting his father's memory. That said I do believe in Lord Nydiam's memory Lord Aeryk should seriously consider increasing his alcohol intake but all in good time." He looks across the group and finally his attention settles on Niobe, "Mes, considering your an ocer, you going to have any issues being on a boat with some nobles for a while?" *Firan*

Zutani hrms. "Mostly we're there to listen to people's troubles and help them relay it to the right authorities, usually a Clan Leader. Sometimes we run polls and sometimes we audit accounts for nobles." She smiles. "I guess you can consider us the go-between." *Firan*

"But it's true. Doubt if you wish. But it is the truth." And indeed, Aeryk could not sound more fervantly sincere. "And I will not hear you belittle my father further," is perhaps drawn after Daemio's words. Aeryk's expression is getting a wee bit intense.

Srenni keeps on walking silently along for some time, listening to the others. She presses her lips together, briefly, then states blandly, "Why, I thought having stolen a ship before already doomed me to piracy, whether it be against Shamibelians or not." Is there a hint of sarcasm? Maybe? "I do not dislike danger. I do not think I would have snuck around Ellish or any fort solely to make a map if I did. I suppose, in a way, Lord Zin calls to me as well as Lady Srenna. Who in Aerval cannot use money, besides? I am a /Griffon/, Mer." And everyone heard /their/ contribution to war. *Firan*

Mamoon doesn't move to intervene in the conflict that seems to be brewing. Pirates don't do diplomacy. Instead, he nods gruffly to Zutani's reply before telling Srenni, "Their contribution to war was great, money notwithstanding. They gave in blood what they could not give in coin." *Firan*

Niobe tosses a grin in Daemio's direction. "I ain't a merc because I cain't deal with folks fer short periods a' time. Hell that's tha reason I work as a merc, make some money an' deal with tha folks that I's got ta fer tha duration." was that a big word for her? Man. *Firan*

"Mer," says Davonos to Razaq after a moment's hesitation, dark eyes turned to Aeryk as he walks, "I have served with Lord Aeryk, and though I do not know him well, I have never found him to act in a manner contrary to the way he presents himself. Additionally, I think Lord Daemio has a very...good point about the drowning thing..."

Gemma doesn't have a conflict with anyone. But, she's Ticanee and isn't paying a lot of attention to the words she's missing. "Heya, what's your name?" she asks Davonos the butt starer. *Firan*

Daemio nods to Niobe, "Very well then Mes." He glances around. "Any other questions or shall we all have a drink together?" *Firan*

Mamoon drinks 1 wolfsbend whiskey.

Razaq laughs out loud, letting the steam from it come out of his lips. "Lords, don't be so serious. Serious is only for the dead or the cold hearted. And life is too short, especially if you're going to share bunkspace with me. And I'd hate to see anyone threaten me - you can go join the dead if you want to do that. Me? I'm wanting that booty, I want the ship, I want the trade contacts. Noble or not - the fact that you're here wanting to earn a pirate title, I just hope you don't get nailed by the First for trying to get around taxes." He did hear someone was a delegate up ahead. "Anyways, my thought is best clear the air at the beginning rather than letting it steam up." He looks for that wine bottle. *Firan*

Srenni smiles thinly at Mamoon. Smiles! Briefly. "I wish all realized that, instead of just the size of our purses, Mer Mamoon. We only sacrificed our people and our cities to give the rest of the clans time to escape the Shamibelians. I suppose that is not enough for everyone, though." She sets her jaw tightly for a moment, then lets out a short sigh. Her voice lowers as she states, "It is not as if we enjoy /needing/ help." *Firan*

"Davonos," says the butt starer on a short delay, brows tilted at an awkward angle as he attempts to assess whether or not she managed to see something unfortunate while she was still ahead of him. This time around, he's careful to keep his eyes up above neck level. "Anizut. I have seen you at some of the recent athletic competitions."

"We are a single force, the Republic," Mamoon replies solemnly. "We do not help, we defend ourselves, and reclaim our lost territory." He notes however, "On that ship, you will not be so much a griffon. Teams will be chosen for each contest, and you will wear those colours proudly. The captain will head one team, and another man will head the second - and if the captain's team wins, he keeps his position. If it loses, however, the leader of the rebel team becomes the new captain, and can choose his new officers."

"Have I knocked you out?" Gemma asks, looking at Davonos carefully, "No, I think I would have remembered. I'm Dame Gemma or Gem." A Gem going to search for .. Gems!

Razaq pats his sword belt, nope, not there. He looks over his shoulder for a bottle slung, nope not there either. "The feck..." he says, getting cross. He again pats himself at all the places one can hide a bottle and although his face is covered by the hood, one can hear the sound of lament at a horrid discovery - of not having any booze. *Firan*

"I am not threatening you. I am not a petty man to kill for a word. But it is my right to demand respect for a man who died for troops and the enslaved on the fields of Ellish." Aeryk's expression is still intense, but it is, indeed, not a violent intensity, nor is his hand strayed to any of his weapons. "You may say whatever you wish about me. But my motives are as I stated. And they will remain so."

"You did not, although you might well have if Lord Marsalos did not finish me off first." Davonos smiles slightly at her return introduction, but the change in expression is quick to fade. "You pulled Lady Srenni off of me and allowed me to place, actually."

"Oh, did I?" Gemma asks, "I usually go for the best fighters first. But, I was otherwise engaged with.." And she whispers something to Dav.

Daemio holds out his whiskey bottle to Razaq, "Here." *Firan*

"Ah, but I will still be a Griffon at heart," Srenni corrects Mamoon, despite his explanation and her birth as a Bear. "I will not say I am not here for a bit of glory." Even if it is a questionable sort -- it's better than nothing, isn't it? "The rebel team -- how will it be chosen? Those who do not care for the captain?"

"I see," says Davonos after a moment, and he chuckles slightly to himself. "You did very well, despite the distraction. I assumed that I was finished when Lord Marsalos came to aid in Lady Srenni's attack."

Razaq pats, and pats again, and the hooded man hears Daemio and takes the bottle. Raising it he says, "Meh, to noblemen who can understand a commoner's plight. And to Lord Aeryk - you don't have to go on some damned quest to show you're Lord Nydiam's son, the people know who you are and what you've done." and takes a long pull. Handing it back he says to Daemio, "Wait till we're on the boat, I brought my fishing pole and one of the best secrets on fishing - you'll love it." *Firan*

Mamoon also notes, as an important aside, "Not only titles will be lost. Names will be lost, as well. You will all need to pick a suitable pirate name." *Firan*

Srenni overhears Razaq and shakes her head, "You assume we must do nothing to be the children of our parents. I believe you are mistaken." *Firan* Niobe seems to be mostly just trudging along, listening to the others talk about this or that. Mamoon the one who gets the most attention when he speaks. "That's right, ain't matter none if there be nobles an' commoners now. We's all goin ta be pirates on tha ship!" *Firan*

Mamoon noticeably declines to answer Srenni's question, smiling to himself as he trudges through the snow.

"An IstaNydiam needed to be here," Aeryk states in simple, succinct restatement of his last before his eyes slip to Mamoon. "A - pirate name? I have gone by Aeryk the Lucky and Aeryk the Red while on the Vrelander ship, but neither are terribly suitable, I felt." He does not offer others.

Zutani stares at Mamoon's back. "Exactly what sort of names are considered suitable pirate names?" she asks. She can count the number of pirates she's met on one hand. One finger really. *Firan*

Gemma nods as she trudges through the snow in her oh-too-short attire. "Should brought a cloak," she murmurs. *Firan*

Gemma oohs pirate name, "GEMMA THE ------" she near-shouts with a grin. *Firan*

Mamoon answers Zutani with, "I am the Dread Pirate Mamoon, for instance." *Firan*

Daemio's brow lifts at Mamoon, "A pirate name... like 'Srenni the.." He bites his tongue and smirks a bit, collecting his bottle and picking up his pace to move after Mamoon. Relieved of his title Daemio seems pretty damned mellow and almost like a normal teenager. Almost. *Firan*

Kai says "I'm black bearded peg leg funny walkin Pete! Scourge of puddles!" *Firan*

Kai fastens his parrot doll on the shoulder of his byrrus. The dolls seems to have been made to do this. He grins.

Daemio eyes Kai, "No you're Mop Boy." *Firan*

Mamoon squints at Gemma. "What did you say?" *Firan*

Kai corrects Daemio "But I'm Cap'n Mamoon's mop boy. If your gonna be a mop boy ya better do it for the best, right?" *Firan*

Niobe says "Is we keepin any part of our name 'er we make up another bit a' that too?" *Firan*

Kai says "Naughty Niobe Throat-Slasher!" *Firan*

Daemio shakes his head. "You're everyone's mop boy or you'll soon be Floating in the Ocean All Alone Boy. Got it?" *Firan*

"You get used to it," Davonos says in an aside to Gemma. "Eventually. I...ah." Pirate names. His face goes blank with fair immediacy.

Aeryk is just trudging along now, not offering anything further. Names are - too, uh, frivolous for his brain. It is a point of pride he can't come up with one!

Kai grins sweetly at Daemio "This iron spear ain't just a decoration." *Firan*

Niobe chuckles in Kai's direction. "Ain't bad at all. Might use it e'en." *Firan*

Daemio considers himself. "I'll be Daemio the Deadly... Lord Aeryk can be Sober Aeryk." *Firan*

Kai is positively armed to the teeth. Look at the kid. Iron spear, bronze knife, leather sling, an axe peeking out of his backpack. Were he not four foot three he'd look like he was heading for a war.

Razaq says, "My name can be Mate Blackey Dagger-Fist." *Firan*

Srenni walks on silently, for now, thinking of the name. Surely she noted Mamoon's evasion of her question, but she doesn't touch on it for now. Kai grins and suggests more names "Lady Srenni, battle maiden of the Seas!" *Firan*

"Sober Aeryk. Very bone-chilling," Aeryk remarks dryly as he trudges.

Zutani is amongst those silent and thoughtful as she tries coming up with names in her head or rather failing to come up with one.

"Be quiet," Srenni states flatly towards Kai.

Daemio eyes Aeryk, "Hey sober's scary on the sea... I'd rather fight a whiskey soaker pirate then a sober one any day... you could though be Stormborn, Son of the Sea, Zin's Razor... feck I don't know. Make something up." *Firan*

Razaq says to Daemio, "Mate Stormborn would be good." *Firan*

Kai says "Bleak Aeryk BlackSails. So there's Black in it like Lord Nydiam's name." *Firan*

"Stormborn is very poetic, if not entirely fitting. More so than the others, perhaps." Aeryk is not, apparently, making anything up. "Black is my father's name, not mine."

Daemio says "How about grey then Aeryk the Grey. It's sober and almost black." *Firan*

Kai agrees with Daemio "That's a cool name." *Firan*

Aeryk raises a shoulder. "Perhaps." And he trudges on. *Firan*

"Davonos the Dirty," says Davonos eventually to his own boots, completely not stealing Aeryk's earlier application of color to his name. "I meant to bathe before coming but did not manage my time very well. In a couple of days it will likely be true."

Razaq says, "Gray? Nah, Mate Stormborn is better. Let him be his own man." *Firan*

Srenni gives Daemio a look. But really, it's impossible to tell if she looks amused or about to roll her eyes. She's bad at the emotion thing.

Kai trots over to Niobe. She's been complimentary to the kid and has proven to have a sense of humor. There was also that pointing business earlier. Wonder what that was about?

Daemio flicks a messily cut curl back from his eyes and keeps walking a bit more. "Mes Niobe, what will you be?" *Firan*

"Grey Aeryk the Stormborn, then," Aeryk finally diplomatizes as he looks to Srenni and then Davonos. "Davonos the dirty? Rather self-depreciating. And you, Lady Srenni?"

Niobe smirks at Kai a bit when the child moves closer. It's Daemio that gets a vocal response first though. "What tha kid said earlier. Less I kin come up with somethin better." she's thinking on it! *Firan*

Srenni looks to Aeryk, perhaps not expecting to be addressed. She reminds him, "I am not longer a Lady, Grey." One corner of her mouth tugs upwards, for a moment, then back down. She doesn't answer his question yet. *Firan*

"I'm not very good at names," Davonos replies with a hint of a shrug. "Davonos the Blue?" There is some blue in his leathers. Creativity abounds. "If I had known ahead of time I would have asked my cousin to come up with a decent one."

Razaq nods, "Mate Davonos the Blue is good." *Firan*

Kai suggests "Davonos the Daring!" *Firan*

Razaq mutters under the hood, "Davonos the Dull." but only in a slight way to show he's joking to the Hydran. *Firan*

"Daring Davonos the Blue," Aeryk again diplomatizes as he glances back to Srenni quizzically, before he remembers. "Ah. Correct. Well. Names."

"Davonos the Dull is probably appropriate," Davonos acknowledges with a tilt of one brow.

Zutani shakes her head in amusement. "I should have dragged my sister along. She's much better with come up with names." *Firan*

Kai says "If Prince Banian were here he'd have 'dashing' somewhere in his name." *Firan*

Daemio nods faintly and considers himself. "Perhaps Daemio the Deadly... or Crimson Death -------" He announces with another drink. "What do you think Srenni?" *Firan*

Niobe says "Ya'll kin jus' call me Throat-slasher fer short a' course." not seeming to mind the tagging child near her. Though if anyone knows Niobe even slightly well they know she's got a passel of brats about in general. Kai gets a slap on his shoulder. "Got a thing fer names ya does!" *Firan*

"Hmm?" Srenni glances towards Daemio. "Oh. Great." Read: Srenni is the worst person to ask. Truly.

Daemio frowns at Srenni and shakes his head a little. The creativity... seriously lacking amid the noble competetors tonight. "------ slasher, any suggestions on what sounds terrifying?" *Firan*

"Dull Hatchett Davy," Davonos suggests, which might be half decent if he did not then explain, "As it seems a dull hatchet would...be less pleasant than a sharp one in terms of how long it would take to bludgeon a person's head in with one." Razaq says, "Longshanks, or Ironheart." *Firan*

"None. This is not an area in which I excel. But colors seem to be a theme." Aeryk looks to Srenni than Zutani, as currently the colorless.

Zutani ahhs softly as she looks down at herself. "Would that make me Zutani the Gold then?" *Firan*

Kai says "There any Eagles with us?" *Firan*

Daemio nods, "I ---- ------ Ironheart... of I could be --------- Daemio, it would be ironic." *Firan*

The cloaked figure gestures to himself with a thumb, "Here."

Kai grins "Then I guess we ask you if its cool to hunt. I don't think anyone specific owns these lands." *Firan*

Razaq says, "There is a fantastic tavern and inn not too far away, which will be warm, friendly and inviting, even to Hydrans. Of course, my Hydran friend here might want to borrow my cloak before he steps in. Not the best idea to be tromping around, and for a fellow mate, I'll do that. No need to hunt, boy, when good quarters are

Kai cocks his head to the side "But huntin an cookin your own kill is fun." *Firan*

"Thank you, me--mate," says Davonos to Razaq, though he cannot help but look somewhat dubious at the cloak, even if he is the only Hydran here. "I do not own much in the way of clothing, or rest assured I would have selected something less conspicuous." I don't see that here.

Niobe has taken to trudging along again, staying on the road and well just being there. She's part of the group yet separate. A side glance to the nobles that there seems to just be sooo many of. (Read as so slow, fighting with RL toddler)

Zutani chuckles to Kai. "Don't you think it's a little too cold to hunt?" She glances up at the grey-black sky and then proceeds to pull the hood of her cloak over her head. *Firan*

"Zutani the Gold. Srenni the Red, perhaps," Aeryk judges quietly.

Kai grins toward Zutani "Its not that cold. It gets colder in the North." *Firan*

Daemio glances to Srenni, "Srenni the Ironmaiden?" *Firan*

The winter night approaches, and the icy rain and sleet that falls invisibly from a grey-black sky makes it all the more forlorn. Very dark, and the wind blowing is harsh, stinging raw flesh left to the elements. But, Razaq points to a few lamps that can be seen, "The Anvil and Hammer is up ahead. Good place to stop, if you ask me. I don't mind paying for meals for the lot of you, and Hydran before we walk up there, take my byrrus. The people know me since I...make a lot of trips."

Razaq removes his ><>< Obsidian Leather Byrrus with Crimson Interior ><><.

"Thanks," says Davonos again as he shrugs into the garment. For his initial hesitation, he doesn't seem to have much of a problem with it once it's on and blocking out some of the cold. Amazing!

"I thought we are supposed to continue on without rest," Zutani speaks up, looking about to check for any tired faces.

Razaq takes the heavy cloak off, and allows others to see what he looks like finally. The rain and sleet pelt his face and he says, "I wouldn't take that off, Hydran, unless you'll want to get pummeled. Not all eagles are as kind as myself. Pity, even Hydrans make for good business partners I've found." Hearing Zutani he says, "Lurashar is two days walk. And you walk faster in this nasty weather if you get a good meal and a good rest. Who knows what Mamoon has in store for us." giving a nod to the pirate as the damn cold rain pelts his skin. *Firan*

Kai walks beside Rezaq. The boy's not even winded after trudging through the snow drifts. If anything the cold seems to invigorate him even more "So you're an Eagle? That's cool. I'm friends with lots of Eagles and am gonna be on soon!" *Firan*

Razaq listens and looks to Kai. As he is without byrrus and cloak, the cold does get to him. "You going to be an Eagle? You being adopted or something?" he asks. "I've had five children myself, and raised others up like my own." *Firan*

Kai nods rapidly "Kodi and Jeri are 'dopting me. I know lots of Eagle nobles too. Lord Marsalos has taught me a lot of stuff and I have three scrolls in the adventure rack in the Temple of Lord Zin. This one will make number four. Do you know Lord Marsalos or LAdy Sufi? They're really cool." *Firan*

Razaq says, "I know of Lord Marsalos, not really Lady Sufi. They aren't in the same circle as I am if you know what I mean. I'm sure your adopted parents will do good to you. I'm proud of all of my children. You know Captain Zaqik? He was my son, hero in 34 AU where he fought. Then there is Danel, he's a Priest. One of my best sons though most aren't aware of is a little known man named Sir Unsel." *Firan*

Kai grins widley "I think I may have met Sir Unsel once. The others I haven't met. That's good though. Now that I know you I can meet them. I like meeting new people. They all have different ways of looking at life, you know?" *Firan*

Razaq frowns a bit as he listens, but forces a smile at the end as he pats Kai's head. "Son, you aren't going to be meeting Zaqik or Unsel" he pauses, "They are dead." *Firan*

Kai cocks his head to the side "Really? I'm sorry to hear that. They're up in the stars with Unot now so they'll know my mom and dad. Did you know when it rains or snows that they are having a party in the sky and drinking wine? Thunder is a bar brawl." He nods sagely. *Firan*

Razaq says, "You think? Dunno, myself. I don't really think about it much, even if I'm as old as I am. I just live, you know. Never met any gods, don't intend to either. If they are there then they are there. Just, you know, I don't really care about them as they don't bother me and I for sure am nothing to be getting their attention if they are out there." *Firan*

Kai grins "Oh they're out there. And there's all kinds of different ones because they get their power from prayers. That's why there are different Gods in Nekhet and Flora. People pray to different ones. What's really interesting is in both places they don't worship Elik so its always very hot. Never any season but high Summer." *Firan*

Razaq shrugs. "You'll find kid that some don't believe in gods." *Firan*

Kai says, "grin widens "That's fine. It just means you aren't giving them any power. So they probably won't do very much for you. It sounds like that's how you like it, though, Blackie. So as long as ya don't do anything to offend them they'll just let ya live your life. Its not like we're slaves or anything. Well except for the taxes. Those are too high.""

Razaq nods, "Taxes are high, tithes are incredibly high. Restrictions put in since the Alliance that just doesn't make any sense to keep them anymore. But you can be a slave to many things. Power. Wealth. Faith and beliefs. You're always living to serve something, kid. Perhaps gods exist, perhaps they don't. All I know is you really only got this one time to do things, so you better do it faster, better than the guy next to you while maintaining good times." *Firan*

Razaq adds, "I mean, twenty five billion stenis was donated in this latest war. Twenty five. Billion. What the feck is a billion. People, clans and the other people having that much and they still put taxes and tithes up? A thousand stenis to simply bathe? See kid, there are other things you can be a slave to." *Firan*

Kai grins at that "I guess that's one way of looking at things. I'll be joining the army so the only thing I'll have to tithe on is when I make somethin. And yeah. I'm really suprised there hasn't been some sort of riot about giving three out of every four steni you own to someone. I guess if I had to do that I'd pick someone who's done something for me. Lord Marsalos is almost like a Dad to me sometimes. So I wouldn't mind giving money to him... but why are there all these charities? If all the nobles are gonna do is take our money and give it to charities why can't we just pick a charity and tithe to it?" *Firan*

Gaddineez is jogging along, the bonduin looks to be sweating rather well as he comes within sight of the ferry, and then takes the ferry across and continues jogging along the road to lurashar. Gaddineez is breathing a bit heavily as he sees what must be some of the group ahead

Kai and the others are walking at a decent pace through the snow. Not slow ebnough to be a sedate pace but not fast enough to really raise a sweat. Kai grins as the Bonduin jogs up. "Hi, I'm Black-bearded Peg-Leg Funny-walkin Pete, Scourge of puddles! Please ta meetcha!" *Firan*

Razaq says, "Charities helped in that twenty five billion, kid. And that general died, and I wonder if there is anything left over or if they have a full accounting of all that stenis. And I always wondered about someone who was full time in the Republic military. You ought to be more in your clan militia than the Republic, I think. Then again, I'm not a soldier and am not aiming to be one either. I like owning my own business, being my own boss. It'd just piss me off having some young thing telling me what to do." *Firan*

Kai nods to Razaq "I plan on winnin pentathalons and stuff when I get older. I've already gotten prize money and I'm just eight. They don't tax prizes. So maybe I may gte my own shop like you did. Can you buy the whole thing from someone or do they make you rent it?" *Firan*

Razaq says, "Depends where it's at, son. Exquisite Designs was purchased by my sister and I from the Eagle clan leader. It's ours, outright. And I own Bayzli Auction House outright. But my sister works there with me. Got a house too. You're limited only to what you think you can do. You just remember that. Course, the pentathlon is getting pretty competitive if you ask me." *Firan*

Razaq adds, "And, you got nobility competiting there too. Personally, and there is a group who agree with me, but I don't think nobility should compete in that event. It's a chance for commoners to shine and the blessings given." *Firan*

Kai nods thoughtfully "I've won several purses from footraces. I'm crazy fast." Its abundantly obvious that were Kai to compete with an ox in an endurence challenge the ox would likely lose. He cocks his head to the side "Why do you think nobles shouldn't compete? Its fun to compete against them. On the racetrack there's no lords or ladies. Just fast and faster. Same thing with flying. When you're up in the air on a griffon none of that matters. Same with the army. You get promoted on how good you are. Sure nobles start as Centurions but the best get promoted and become nobles sometimes. Wow. You own a lot of stuff. Did you decide not to have a sponsor?" *Firan*

Razaq says, "Your alright kid, but you're a bit stupid and still far too young to really understand things." He points to Kai's bodyguard, "And that chap there, I think is a waste of stenis - why a noble would place a bodyguard on an orphan is beyond me." He doesn't answer about sponsor as he walks in the snow. *Firan*

Kai grins a little bit "Actually, I'm not all that stupid. I find if you smile a lot and act like a kid you generally don't get in much trouble. If you show off how smart you are people tend to think of you as dangerous. Where I came from being thought of as dangerous was a good way to get into the stars real fast. As far as Brutus? He's here so the people I left won't come after me and take me back. When I get older I won't need a bodyguard. I like to go out and hunt and stuff and with him there's always an adult around so I can do what I want instead of bothering the priests." *Firan*

Razaq says, "You're a kid. Not much older than what, ten? Probably about oh.." and he begins looking over Kai, appraising him. "Spindly legs, probably prety quick. Rosy skin - bet you can run for awhile. Green eyes, stubborn streak runs in you too. As for acting like a kid, you have that down pat as you are a kid. When you begin understanding the real world, you'll know. Why you are allowed weapons I don't even know, that orphanage is pretty idiotic if you ask me. Still, I bet you'll grow up to be about 5' 7". Bit on the lean side, but seeing how you like running and hunting, you'll get some muscles on you. As for Brutus, I find that it's a bit ridiculous for an orphan to have a bodyguard, as you kids really just go all over anyways. Like I told Unsel, I didn't mind where he went, just as long as he told me before and told me when he got back, and took a buddy with him." *Firan*

Kai grins vaguely "I'm eight. Mayb you should add a few more inches?" *Firan*

Razaq says, "Nah, you'll not be the tallest Firan around, but you won't be too short. For a soldier, anyways. It's good to be full of interest and learning, just watch where you stick your nose in, kid." *Firan*

Gaddineez finally catches up just in time to hear Razaq's last words and then Kai's following words. "Your a firan, I doubt you will be any taller than 5'7" Gaddineez grunts a bit in annoyance. "Do you even know how to use weapons well enough to carry them?" *Firan*

Kai says "As for the spear I helped make it. I'm Yacen Cylisti's apprentice. As long as I don't poke anyone with it who didn't deserve it I get left alone about it. As for as stickin my nose in places? I can read. I go to the Great Library and the Temple of Zin and read whatever I can get my hands on." He smiles at the bonduin "The spear, yes. The knife I butcher with. The axe I chop trees with. The sling I won as a prize. I can use my spear if something is deadly and my fists if something's not. I wouldn't mind learning more about the spear but Lord Parosh has been busy. All the Ceremonies."" *Firan*

Kai doesn't mention the abundance of funerals as well.

Razaq gives a nod to Gaddineez. "Well, if you were my kid, I'd have boxed your ears for handling weapons. I'm going to have words with that orphanage, and as for apprenticing, how the feck can you apprentiship if you're doing all that reading, hunting, jibber jabbing and running? Pretty lousy apprentice, if you ask me. I'll have words with Mer Yacen." *Firan*

Gaddineez looks over at Razaq, he isnt on the old man's side, all this 'having words with' stuff just has the bonduin rolling his eyes before he looks back to Kai. "I do not allow my son to be carrying around weapons without me near and he has the best spear wielder in anarinuell as a father and as a trainer" Gaddineez shrugs. "Parosh is good with --- spear, yes... but he is too busy to -- a trainer" *Firan*

Kai cocks his heads to the side and replies to Razaq "Plenty of people have stuck their nose in my business. You won't be the first." Then to Gaddineez "I usually only carry it to go hunting or practicing. I figure I might need it out here. The pirate thing. I've never heard of an unarmed pirate." He giggles "Maybe you can show me a little bit with the spear. I have no idea when Lord Parosh will get around to it." *Firan*

Razaq raises a brow at the giggle and tries not to look sick. He continues on walking.

Gaddineez waves a hand a bit at this and grunts. The bonduin walks in silence for a while. "Perhaps I will teach you a bit just so I get to hit you in the head... and have a reason to" Gaddineez sneers, his eerie black gaze just looking down at the child. "I became a master of the spear and sword and a master teacher for reasons just like that" *Firan*

Kai beams at Gaddineez "I'm glad you came along. If you wouldn't mind I would love to ask you questions about the Bonduin Gods. The only one I know anything about is Ulashani. I've leared about the Gods of Nekhet, the Totems, the Gods of Flora and the Gods of the Firans but I've never been able to ask an actual Bonduin about their religion and I haven't been able to dig much out of the Great Library." He grins "Sometimes I need a hit to the head, ya know." *Firan*

Gaddineez pauses then and looks at Kai. "Who the feck told you about Ulashanai?" *Firan*

Kai says "Great Library. There's stuff in there on Drik, Obala, and Ulashanai. They're all the same person apparently. There's those Lanesh whackos in there too." *Firan*

"Is that why you agreed to teach me?" Srenni asks dryly. Is she joking? She had been walking with -- uh, probably Aeryk. And he probably got quiet and boring and she had to find someone new to talk with. (Sorry!) But then her eyebrows loft at the exchange between Kai and Gaddineez and she lets it be.

Razaq looks at the eight year old oddly.

Gaddineez laughs at this and shakes his head. "No... Ulashanai is not the same as Obala... Obala is a dark god that lets his powers be used for evil by his priests... Drik I do not believe ever has allowed that and I know Ulashanai does not" Gaddineez then looks over at Srenni. "I wouldnt hit you in the head, it might mar your good looks" *Firan*

Kai says "So Obala, Drik, and Ulashanai are different Gods? Ok that makes a lot more sense. 'Specially with the Firans giving prayers to Lord Drik. If he was helping the Shammi's it wouldn't ake too much sense to give him power. But if he's seperate I guess that'd be all right.

Gaddineez shrugs as the kid continues talking. "I have been ------- lately though that perhaps Drik --- Ulashanai have a close connection, if they are not the same person... and I feel Obala is a complete opposite of the other two" *Firan*

Kai says "What about the other Bonduin Gods. The Nekhet's head God is a Water God but isn't Zin and the Florans worship Orcha as the head of their Gods. How do the Bonduin Gods arrange themselves?" *Firan*

Srenni narrows her eyes at Gaddineez's comment on her looks briefly, but shrugs it off. "It is good to see you, Gaddineez. I did not realize you were coming along." Not that Srenni is exactly what one would expect, but here she is! "How is your arm?" She has -- no comments on Drik, Ulashanai or Obala, really. Or Bonduin gods. *Firan*

Gaddineez holds up his splinted right arm with a bit of a grunt. "Its broken" Gaddineez smirks a bit before his attentions turn back to Kai. "There is The goddess of Warriors, Ithadu, the Goddess of the land, Doya and then Ulashanai, the god of the land of never, taking the undeserving souls to the land of never" Gaddineez takes in a bit of a breath. "I needed to get away from that city for a while" He indicates Firan behind them in the distance. "So I decided to come along" *Firan*

Aeryk is still dull and quiet as he trudges, trying to disguise an off lack of breath or huffed breath as the hours draw on and the cold and effort begins to get into his bones. But he is paying attention, such as it is.

Kai cocks his head to the side and mouths the words "Ithadu, Doya, Ulashanai." He nods hs head. Now they are firmly set in his mind. Next question. "Is the Land of Never connected to the City of Lost Souls?" *Firan*

Gaddineez shrugs a bit in annoyance at all the questions of his gods. "The land of never is the plains that the souls are sent to that no soul wants to go to, you are forever lost, I do not think it has a connection to the Firan's city" Gaddineez clears his throat at this *Firan*

Razaq seems to walk away from the group and the yapping odd child, and goes back to being silently walking.

One corner of Srenni's mouth tugs upwards at the mention of the City of Lost Souls, but she doesn't comment on it, instead touching on what Gaddineez says: "I know what you mean. Between the abundance of funerals and everyone's fixation on the wedding --" She glances towards Aeryk apologetically. No offense! "Some time away is not so bad."

Gaddineez nods in response to Srenni, clearing his throat a bit. "Yes, Exactly... Lord General Zafir cannot even spar me because he is too busy with funerals and clan business, so I figured now would be a good time to get away for a while" *Firan*

"The wedding," Aeryk found something to comment on!, "is a rather major event. Took years to come to fruition."

Kai says "I thought giving cake to Olivia was really cool." *Firan*

"Yes, however --" How to nicely say that Srenni Just Doesn't Care about that sort of thing? She is not much for -- gossip or feminine topics, of which marriage is one. "Ah. Yes. Everyone is busy. Talking." How awkward. "I do not care for gossip."

Gaddineez offers a wave to the group and begins to jog off. "Im gonna go ahead and gain a bit of ground" With that, Gaddineez falls silent *Firan*

"My brother wishes very much he was here," is a half segue. "But he has done the responsible thing and remained home with his wife." Aeryk cants his head just so toward Srenni. "There will be weddings after theirs. Spring Festival approaches." Kai treats Srenni like he would treat a half-tamed porcupine. He never knows what will get her 'Ticaneed off' at him. Hehazards a question "What sorts of things do you like?" *Firan*

"Yes. How unfortunate." Unfortunate? Sure. Srenni keeps on walking at a steady pace. "My one wedding was a poor idea." Ha. Ha? No, she's not laughing. She casts her intense gaze down at Kai briefly, then states, "Combat." Obvious answer.

"Quite. But perhaps we will miss it." Aeryk does not comment on Srenni's past marriage, nor does he sound terribly enthusiastic about the concept himself. Marriage. Whatever.

Kai nods "I like combat." Finally. At least there's some sort of common ground. "I used to go into the temple of Srenna a lot and there was a preistess there who was really nice. I can never remember her name, though. Its also very nice that you let Iggy come in and warm up." His veridian eyes turn to Aeryk "I wish Prince Banian could have come along too. I really like him. What sorts of things do you like, Stormborn?" *Firan*

Indeed. Marriage. Whatever. Srenni shares Aeryk's sentiments. "We should be so lucky."

"Combat," Aeryk echoes rather dryly. And next, "Perhaps we will be. But there are responsibilities to see to."

Kai nods hunting is sort of like combat "One time Albel and I killed two Elk. He used his bare hands. The last one was mostly me an my spear 'cause he kept missin it. I had a bronze one back then. Those elk are -huge-. I taned up the furs real nice and gave half to Albel and a quarter to Father Brizo so he could make boots. There was a -lot- of meat. I had to learn to cook so it wouldn't go to waste." *Firan*

Razaq looking up, he sees the weather changed to fair weather as clouds float above in the winter day. Looking over at Davonos to check if the Hydra is wearing his cloak, he sort of wishes, as wet armour and clothing semi-dried isn't the most comfortable.

Srenni nods once in response to Aeryk. "So there are. Running an event at the festival. Ellish." The latter definitely sounds more important to her. "Hopefully this will be a nice, if brief, change." *Firan*

"Perhaps. I half suspect more of the same." Aeryk half-clears his throat and glances at Kai. "Aren't you impressive."

Kai shrugs in response to Aeryk "I think every kid should learn to hunt and cook. Then there'd be no beggars and theives. If you give dignity to a person it doesn't cost you a thing but means the world to them. That's not in the Code of Kai, yet, but it will be." *Firan*

Razaq says, "That just shows you're ignorance, kid." as he overhears as the group walks. *Firan*

"Mm," Srenni agrees with Razaq. She glances upwards, away from Kai, and shakes her head briefly. "Well. It seems no Gold Dragons are in our crew. That is a plus, if nothing else," she comments to Aeryk. Surely, as a Cockatrice, he'll agree with her!

"I see," Aeryk states toward Kai. "You have a code already, even." This said and this finished, Aeryk turns back toward Srenni. "It is a plus. I am in no mood for dragons."

Razaq says, "If there was a Dragon here, perhaps they'd be better at renaming things." *Firan*

Kai says "I just get tired when they constantly go on about monotheism. Well that and they're usually pretty cold shoudlered." He looks at his current company and begins to wonder how vast a difference having a Dragon around would be. "I don't think Gold Dragons want to be pirates." *Firan*

"Tch. They're good at taking everything else, why not ships?" Srenni rolls her eyes.

"I do not think they are terribly talented at taking ships. Winning by force of numbers is not precisely glorious." Aeryk does not append an "in my opinion" to this, mind.

Kai says "This pirate thing is a fair fight. I think its sort of a part of their nature to only fight when they think they can win. I think they are horrible bullies for what they have done to the Cocktrice and the Griffon. I'm glad for the Republic but sometimes what happens between clans makes me sad and frustrated."" *Firan*

Razaq looks to Kai and says, "Again kid, you show your ignorance." *Firan*

Srenni glances between the other to adults briefly. Ahem. "Ah. Yes. Pirates are always fair. Of course." *Firan*

"This isn't going to be fair," Aeryk states in that almost flat way. "That is certain."

Kai cocks his head "I didn't say -pirates- were fair. I said I think this competition would be." He looks at Razaq "You could teach my parrot to say that after I said anything hopeful and you could save a lot of time." Then to Aeryk "It might be. It might not be. It depends on what you make it. If everyone betrays everyone else? Well... there'll be a Pirate King that no crew will trust." *Firan*

"Well, considering you will not be competing, it doesn't really concern you, does it?" Srenni doesn't even look down at Kai as she says this, eyes scanning the road before them and the sky above them. Blame the scout in her for that.

"If you are in it for the booty only, why would you care overmuch about being trusted? If this is just an extended game, which I fear it is bound to be, why does it matter, even?" Aeryk pauses to glance skyward as it clears, taking in his breath.

Razaq says, "When we get to Lurashar, and if you don't mind a bit of a drink, a good bite and some good cards, we can stop at an inn I frequent. It is just as you walk into the eastern gates of Lurashar. It's on our way to the docks anyways." *Firan*

Kai looks at Srenni "I guess nobody listened to Mamoon." *Firan*

Kai says "He said I was gonna be his assistant in judging this thing. So I think that maybe even though I'm not competing? What I think may mean something. Not much, really, but something." *Firan*

"Mmm," Aeryk 'says' in his way. "Then I expect I will be going home early, since I am not suitably entertaining. Well enough. I have much to take care of."

Srenni looks to Razaq, cool green eyes sweeping over him before she states, "Perhaps. He did say that we would be stopping in Lurashar for a bit before taking off, didn't he?" And -- the Griffon likely does not look like one who is much for Lurashar's attractions. If she's been there? She doesn't seem as if she has. *Firan*

Kai cocks his head to the side "I donno why you think I don't like you, Stormborn. I know you have a hard time warmin up to me because I don't act the way a noble kid would act. I'm not gonna be unfair. If you're good at it you're good at it. You represent the IstaNydiams and they've always had dashingness and piratey stuff. Just because you're very serious all the time doesn't mean that ya wouldn't be good at it. I think all of you have good points and would be able to do the job."

"I may stop in by an inn," Aeryk says with a distraction that ends in a slow focus on Kai with those twinkling, but dead sober hazel eyes. "How generous you are. Young Kai."

Razaq says, "Well, I tell you right now, you'll be tossed out of the inn, kid, so you'll get a headstart on mopping the deck." *Firan*

Kai looks at Razaq "No Inn ever turned down my order for mead. Maybe in forty years things have changed a little bit. You were born before -snow- so I think I may be on to something here." *Firan*

"Again, I am impressed by young Kai's generosity of spirit and incredible restraint," Aeryk says, that slow, sober focus still in place.

Man, Razaq feels his age now at that comment from Kai. He sort of fronts.

"Respect your elders," Srenni barks at the child. She just shakes her head.

Kai says "I do respect my elders. I just draw the line when it comes to constant insults. I don't think anyone would stand for it. But we're playing pirates here. Insults are part of the game. Maybe this is Blackie's way of bein friendly. Usually you only jibe people ya like. I kinda like him too." He grins at Razaq "You're all right. If ya didn't care about something you wouldn't have any opinions at all." *Firan*

"Listen to the boy." And Aeryk takes a single side-step closer. He is a tall man, compact, and his expression is undertaking that intensity. "Not even ten and he is wiser than all the world. No experience can compete with his innate insight, and he may advise, judge and speak against whoever he wishes. And with a smile. What a talent."

"And he has said that he goes to Lurashar and that inn regularly. I should think he would know if children are allowed in better than /you/ would," Srenni admonishes Kai, cold green eyes narrowing. Even with Aeryk's (who she stands only an inch shorter than!) comments. "You would do well to learn some respect; you seem to be lacking in it, from my experience of late." Her fist is clenched and she frowns disapprovingly, glancing to Razaq.

After several moment's deliberation, with the confrontation between sticks in the mud #1 and #2 and Kai difficult to ignore, stick in the mud #3 has picked up his pace just enough to come abreast with the ongoing discussion of respect, or lack thereof.

Razaq is silent. One can see though that the eldest in this adventure is a bit, well, contemplative as a frown is on his face.

Kai smiles a bit "Hmm. At the beginning of this Captain Mamoon said we were all equals. Sailors on the same ship. Pirates. Pirates respect people for different reasons than people in the city do. I am simply playing the game by the rules that have been put down. You wouldn't want me to break the rules, would you?" He looks at Aeryk and can't decide if the man is having him on or not, though he is suspicious. *Firan*

Razaq breaks his silence, "Either you are the most knowledgeable child I"ve ever come across, or you're the smallest adult I've ever seen. You've an answer for everything, kid." and that's all the irritated eagle will say. But he does give a look to the bodyguard and says, "I'd hate for you to sleep and fall off the side of the deck."

Oh, this isn't about having anyone on. There is nothing friendly about Aeryk's face, Aeryk's posture, Aeryk's words, and he leans down to get just closer to Kai.

"Young Kai. You stink of hubris. You stink of pride. It does not matter if we are equals in the rules of the game. You still stink of pride. True, deep, rotten pride, not a pirate's boasting. And I hope you grow out of it before it gets you into trouble."

"People have been turned to statues for hubris," Srenni nods to Aeryk's comment, before adding her own, "And you are /not/ playing the game. You are observing. Even if you /were/ playing, this is not an effective way of earning respect." And, something else mumbled.

"If he was turned into a statue we would be reminded of him forever," says Davonos, who joins the conversation at a low mutter, and...sort of keeps himself out of arm's length of both Aeryk and Srenni as he walks. It is also easier to glower at mute Brutus from this angle.

Kai's brows cloud a little. His smile grows fainter but does not leave. That smile is always there. Its a defense mechanism of sorts. To Aeryk "And you would take away my pride? What else do I have? My parents died before and as I was born. I slept on a floor in a house with no door far north of here. I was forced to do things that were very bad. I left. I escaped. I came here. I made my own Code so I would know when I was being bad. So I wouldn't be that bad ever again. I learned to take care of myself and to fight. I learned to live off the land. There are things in my life I am not proud about. But I am proud about doing the right thing and having hope even when I shouldn't. I am not allowed to compete. This doesn't mean I am not playing too. When I have my Ceremony I am joining the order of Zin. I don't care about steni or the fame. I came here for an adventure. That's the best way of worshipin Zin. I am sorry that you are all mad at me. Twice now Blackie has threatened my life. Instead of defending me you take his side." He looks at Arik with intensity in his green eyes "And its not just pride. Its dignity. I know about Lord Banik. I know his last act was to give up the sacred relic that kept him from being a statue because he was causing problems for the Republic. He did that voluntarily. Nobody forced it on him. He chose that way to atone for what he had done. If I find that relic I will give it back to him. I think he may have a lot left to offer Aerval." *Firan*

"No." And Aeryk is succinct. "I know dignity. And this is hubris. This is an inability to apologize and an inability to understand that your cares are not the greatest cares in the world. Good evening." And with that, Aeryk straightens, and long-strides on ahead.

A child being self centered? That never happens.

Razaq moves on and away from the group now, silently.
