Trial of the Century
From FiranMUX
The Trial of the Century is the coined name for the trial led by the Religious Council to determine if ritual of marriage has been abused by Prince Sadin Elianik and Lady Lucretia IstaNydiam. The history between the two nobles has sparked numerous controversies. The consequences of Prince Sadin's speech declaring that Lady Lucretia as only wife affects clans across the Republic and the status of his noble children.
History
Prince Sadin shocked thousands when he publicly announced that Lady Lucretia is his only wife. Public noble outrage spurned curses at the Prince, particularly from the Royal House of IstaNydiam.
Prince Sadin and Lady Lucretia have has an on-off relationship/marriage for years. Each has had numerous spouses and children since their first divorce including such nobles as former Clan Leader Nydiam, Lady Yasha and Lord Judanarius.
There was much scandal to be had about the first marriage of Sadin and Lucretia. The first time around, Prince Sadin was betrothed to Fidelia Ista Aldrik, but on a quest to the Caldera City he met Lady Lucretia. Stung by the broken betrothal, the Ista Aldriks vowed revenge, and some claim that the scandals later plaguing Lucretia were a direct result of this grudge.
During her first marriage to Prince Sadin, Lady Lucretia was first attacked in the bath by a towel boy. Shortly after, she was "discovered" masked, in a brothel. Though she denied being the woman in question, the scandal was so great that Queen Sabine forced a divorce and banished a pregnant Lucretia from the city of Anarinuell.
When Sadin was named Triumvir, one of his first acts was to recall Lucretia from banishment and attempted to redeem her name. It would come to be discovered that a prostitute named Faythe looked a great deal like Lady Lucretia and eventually confessed to having been hired to impersonate Lucretia.
But meanwhile, Lucretia had re-married, this time to Lord Nydiam. Unfortunately, the Religious Council later declared the marriage was not a marriage; her marriage to Lord Nydiam of the Eagle Clan was annulled. It turns out that Sadin still had his wedding necklace from their previous marriage. Sadin arrived at the Firgalik Mansion to reclaim her. Torn between her love of Nydiam and her love of Sadin, Lucretia bargained to make her son Lucas a full prince. Though it tore her apart inside, she knew that this would give her son the life he would not have otherwise.
Both nobles moved on following the divorce and banishment. Lucretia went on to marry Lord Judanarius whereas Sadin was claimed as a marriage prize by Lady Yasha. Their lives continued to change -- each having children, divorcing and re-marrying.
In 44 A.U., following a trip to Caledra City, Prince Sadin announced to all of Anarinuell that Lady Lucretia has been his only wife.
Consequences
- "As Viceroy of the Republic and Elianik family, I ask for her holy guidance to verify Prince Sadin's claim and to determine whether or not the ritual of marriage has been abused."
- ―Viceroy Taleo src
The fate of Sadin's and Lucretia's children is at an unrest. Due to his speech, all other children born not of Sadin's and Lucretia's marriage are illegitimate and disinherited. The children affected are Princess Nalene (Sadin/Yasha), Lady Cecilia (Lucretia/Nydiam), Lord Adan (Sadin/Bashona) and Lord Zayus (Lucretia/Judanarius). Lady Cecilia has declared herself an IstaNydiam immediately following her Ceremony of Souls. Lord Adan has long been publicized as the bastard child of Sadin. The responses on behalf of Princess Nalene and Lord Zayus have not been publicly addressed as of yet.
While the Clan Council has ruled that Tia, Lucas, and Argin are all legitimate. They have not, however, discussed Nalene, Cecilia, Adan, or Zayus in their rulings.
Outcomes
While the Religious Council decided (on a close margin) that there was no legal and valid marriage between the two, the issue of Marriages of Assertion came into play. All the children of their various marriages were found to be legal heirs of whatever throne they were linked to.
The Gold Dragons, celebrating what they declared to be a legal and valid marriage between the two, began a huge military celebration in Sarkaran and one a little too close to Nelebam for the comfort of the Bear Clan.
This led to a possible war between the Gold Dragons and the Bears which was only pre-empted by the Shamibelians attacks on Lurashar. A second force was headed for Anarinuell but was largely stopped; still - there were casualties.

Complications
The reputation of Prince Argin is at stake in this trial as much as a son of Sadin as because of the recent scandal in the military. During the most recent campaign in Ellish, a Shamibelian Vitara offered access to a strategic plot of land that might have helped the Firans win control of a gate and secure the city. All she asked in return was marriage to an important Firan.
Argin, sensing the chance to gain a strategic advantage, ordered Lord Adan Istabannos, recently divorced from his second wife Yassamin, to marry the Shamibelian woman. Lord Adan refused on the grounds of immorality--no proper Firan would marry a Shamibelian, especially not according to their customs! Argin argued that a proper Firan would do any damned thing he needed to to win the war.
In the end, the marriage did not happen, the battle was lost, and the military has split into factions, some stressing the need for victory at all costs, and the others claiming to be the defenders of Firan morality.

Social Adjustments
IC Time: Firan time: 06:31:40 AM on Thu May 11, in the year 44 A.U.
Social points for Sadin, Lucretia, and Cecilia were adjusted by 1,000,000 because:
- Prince Sadin Elianik has done it again, by announcing the scandalous news that he has actually been married to Lucretia Firgalik-Elianik-Corinala-IstaNydiam all along and that her daughter, Cecilia, is his legitimate get. This has caused all kinds of ripples in the public imagination, and has made the Chimerans in particular quite upset because it means that their Princess Nalene, daughter of Sadin's "wife" Yasha, is actually a bastard child and disinherited. Naturally there are those who disbelieve this story, and others--particularly Gold Dragons--who believe it utterly. The scandal has caused the Viceroy to fob the issue off on the Religious Council, but as far as the common people go, this is the most Soap Opera entertainment they've had in years, and Sadin's popularity is, at least momentarily, on the rise.

Social points for Nalene were adjusted by -1,000,000 because:

IC Time: Firan time: 06:39:19 AM on Thu May 11, in the year 44 A.U.
Social points for Diamia were adjusted by 500,000 because:
- While the nobility scoffs at the fact that Clan Leader Diamia used the "f" word in response to Prince Sadin's assertion that he had foisted off his daughter on Nydiam, and fooled the royal Cockatrice Family into thinking that Lucretia was Nydiam's lawfully wedded wife . . . they still admire Diamia's pluck. Naturally, the Gold Dragons believe that she's only so angry because everything Sadin said MUST BE TRUE!
IC Time: Firan time: 06:46:40 AM on Thu May 11, in the year 44 A.U.
Social points for Zayus and Adan were adjusted by -500,000 because:
- The status of the bastardy of Sadin's other child with Bashona ("Lord Adan") and Lucretia's child with Judanarius ("Zayus") raises its ugly head to cause scandal once again. The Firgaliks took in Zayus believing that he was the legitimate get of a Firgalik noblewoman (Lucretia) but some say the fact that the Griffons said he was illigitimate all along and that Judanarius disowned Zayus only proves that he knew all along that Sadin and Lucretia were still married, and that the speech from the Caldera City explaining that they had been married all along and that all their other liaisons were illicit is true.
IC time: Firan time: 10:29:19 AM, on Sat Jan 06, in the year 45 A.U.
Social Points for Lucretia were adjusted by 500,000 because:
- Lucretia's heartfelt appeal to Gold Dragon male pride, to defend her honor as a Good Gold Dragon woman, hits the mark, and she has many new partisans in her cause. (OOC RP Note: If you're a Gold Dragon man who needs direction, you may seek to be in the personal employ of Lady Lucretia, or volunteer to participate some way in the Trial of the Century(tm) on her behalf.)
IC Time: Firan Time: 05:56:46 AM, Tue Jan 09, 45 A.U
Social Points for Zutrik were adjusted by 1,000,000 because:
- Lord Minister Zutrik N'Gato must be someone important if he is defending an Elianik Prince and his supposed bride at a Religious Council trial.
IC Time: Firan time: 02:16:04 AM, Wed Mar 14, 45 A.U.
Social points for Sadin were adjusted by 1,000,000 because:
- The fact that the prosecution's lawyer, Lord Osirus, had to publicly ask for evidence, any evidence at all, to make his case against Prince Sadin before the Religious Council leads the people to think that Sadin may just be being railroaded after all, and that it is a rather romantic story that Prince Sadin and his lady Lucretia have been married all this time. . . certainly if true, it raises the stature of Prince Lucas and Prince Argin, as well as Clan Leader Ojitar via his marriage to Tia.
RL Time: Tue Dec 30 15:51:04 2008
Social Points for all nobles were adjusted by 500,000 because:
- You know, the common people have less and less respect for nobles lately. First of all, there has been little to no push-back against Neo-nobility not taking noble privilege, and so now women in all the clans are refusing. Secondly, lords like Pyrrus Didoron are sitting in prison for months at a time, leading the people to believe that there's no special legal protection or consideration for nobles as in older times. Then there is the entire Lord "Prince" Banian and Mes "Lady" Nilara debacle in which a noblewoman betrothed into a noble house was deflowered and then sent to the White Dove as punishment. And finally, the tone that people have been taking with Prince Sadin in the Religious Council trial has given the people great freedom. The nobles in the city should expect to see their status eroding.
IC Time: Firan time 03:05:58 PM, Sun Mar 25, 45 A.U.
Social points for Diamia were adjusted by -10,000,000 because:
- The rumors circulating that the Royal Cockatrice Family may be in league with Drik--indeed, that Lady Bashona Istabannos may be the Consort of the great dark god strikes some as absurd and others as plausible, but whether the people believe or don't believe, the mere accusation causes the status of the Royal Cockatrices to come under further disrepute, having long been associated with the Lanesh Regime as it is. Naturally, Gold Dragons are quick to exploit this as proof that the evil Cockatrice Clan has been feigning victimhood all these years over the issue of Sarkaran, but really, can the Gold Dragons cede another city to the powers of darkness? They say no!

- Tue Dec 02 22:57:08 2008 – Sadin's Return / A very large giant eagle is hovering over the forum, and it looks rather hungry.
- Tue Dec 02 23:04:37 2008 – Above the forum, the ENORMOUS bird, about the size of a building, appears to be doing a 'swooping' maneuver so that its rider can "jump off." The only problem is that the wing span of the bird is about 30 feet, and it seems to be on course to *bump* one of the statues in the forum.
- Mon Dec 22 23:55:57 2008 – There is some sentiment in the Republic that Prince Lucas' remarks about the Bear Clan exerting undue influence over the Firan Realms is correct. (After all, this has been the perception for some time now.) He has gained some support for supporting his family even though all know that he and his father have been estranged.
- Mon Dec 22 23:56:50 2008 – The rest of the Republic might have seen some merit in Prince Lucas' remarks, but the Bears--who have long considered Lucas their 'favorite' prince, if they had a favorite--are very displeased.
- Tue Dec 30 16:52:41 2008 – SCANDAL! At last night's Religious Council Trial, Prince Sadin revealed (in a manner many thought to be persuasive) that Lady Proxy Bashona Istabannos, long thought dead or captured by Shamibelians, is actually the Consort of Drik. Lady Bashona's bastard son Adan was present at the time of the testimony and erupted in danger only to be accused of possibly being the dark lord's son.
